Okay, now as anyone could see there are HUNDREDS of tech threads floating around in CD - ranging from questions about graphics hardware, to questions about pricier graphics hardware and other tech such as monitors, hard drives and Processors to announcement threads of new technology and more. (I accede - I'm not being very eloquent here

Any questions you have, tech news or ANYTHING related to buying/selling/information/announcements of new hardware should go here.

For example, if you come to the forums to ask "What is the better graphics hardware" or "What sort of RAM should I put in my PC?" then it should go here - I'm a little hazy, I know - but please keep all those graphics card and tech questions to one thread! Please!
So here's the summary, all:
  • Announcements and queries on new or unreleased tech
  • Benchmarks and results of hardware/discussion
  • Questions on what sort of hardware you need/want for your machine
  • Questions about existing tech and/or function
  • Pricing and recommendations
Should be kept to THIS THREAD.

This has been A-okayed by CCNA for all who were wondering - it's up to you to stop filling CD with the same topics again and again that ask what the most powerful card in existence is so you can (not) buy it.

If you feel you have a question or can answer one - please feel free to do so.

Also, this is a great thread for you PC newbs, for learning more about your PC and hardware. http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=258050&st=0&p=4626051&#entry4626051

Thanks all.
Adding more links shortly, thank you for your patience.

Who are the top manufacturers of ATI cards right now? Normally I'd go with XFX as they have a great reputation for their nVidia cards, but I've heard some bad things regarding their ATI lineup (like bad batches of 4890s, and cheap custom PCB for their 5xxx cards). I've also heard bad things about Diamond, so that leaves me with Sapphire, HIS, PowerColor and VisionTek to choose from for my 5850. They're all the same price, so it'll all come down to customer service and warranty policies.

Brought over from the last thread:
Ok. Here's what my set up will be this week and I'm wondering something.

My video card has dual DVI outputs. My current monitor just has 1 VGA input (I'm using a converter). I'm getting a second monitor which has multiple inputs. I plan on hooking up the DVI input to my computer and the HDMI to my Xbox. If I have dual monitor setup running on my computer, will I still feel the impact when I have HDMI selected on the second monitor?

Hope that's worded clearly...

And also, the more important/urgent one. My coworkers computer is shutting off. She's not the admin account, so I can't install the program(s) I need, but I think it's an overheating issue. She said that she tried to turn it on this morning but it wouldn't work. Later, it came on on it's own. I cleaned out all the dust. When I flipped the PSU back on, the exhaust fan spun once (yay power!) and the indicator light on the motherboard turned on, letting me know the motherboard is getting power. Nothing happened when I tried to turn it on. I leaned back to turn the PSU off again to check the connections and I heard what I can only describe as a hissing sound. That bothered me, so I shut off the PSU. The hissing sound dissipated until it made the sound like an old tube tv turning off. I'm gonna leave it off over night until I can reapply thermal paste in the morning (didn't have it with me cause I didn't know I'd have to be fixing it).

Any ideas?

You will hear bad things about any company on the net.

Stick with XFX. I have the XFX 5870 and am tickled pink with it. They are the only one doing ATI cards with a double lifetime warranty and are modder friendly.

If not XFX, Asus is the next best for ATI. They offer a 3 year warranty but are not modder friendly. (Though depending how minor the mod, you may luck out.)

The XFX line was the cheaper line in the 5870 but not so for the 5850s. Odd. Both in the sense it's the better option warranty wise for the cheaper 5870 vs all others, and that it didn't carry over with the 5850 line.

I'm not sure what others will tell you, but I'm perfectly happy with my Powercolor card...

I have two Sapphire cards, and they have never given me any problems. Sapphire, HIS, and Palit are the first-tier integrators of long standing; Diamond, Powercolor, and Visiontek are the second tier, and with these cards, second tier is fine. When ATI cards were having all sorts of driver problems in the 2xxx and 3xxx generations, Sapphire was providing proprietary drivers to fix these problems. ASUS, Gigabyte, and XFX are more recent; XFX is justly admired for warranties and customer service.

For some reason L4D keeps randomly crashing to the desktop. I know my rig can run the game fine and all my other games work.
Here's a dxdiag just in case.

For some reason L4D keeps randomly crashing to the desktop. I know my rig can run the game fine and all my other games work.
Here's a dxdiag just in case.

Have you verified and defragmented your files? It fixes most errors for me.

Greetings all,

I now have windows 7 and I wonder about my Soundblaster X-Fi xtremegamer. Is it useless now? I know I don't have access to EAX anymore (except if using Alchemy), but will the sound still be processed exclusively by the sound card?

Thank you,

Koldunic

Microsoft stopped supporting hardware acceleration in DirectSound as of Vista. Your sound card will still carry audio, but all processing of that sound will be done by the CPU, just as if you had a card with no hardware acceleration, so long as you are playing a DirectSound game.

Yikes. So I could as well use my on-board soundcard? No difference at all?

Thank you for answering. :)

Go to Creatives site and download Alchemy. It will restore hardware acceleration through OpenAl.

I still use my E-Gamer, but I do not bother with Alchemy as it did not work the last couple times I tried it. It made my games sound terrible with distortion.

Even without Alchemy, it still beats my onboard sound by leaps and bounds.

Edit- Nevermind, after an hour of updating and patching, I fixed my problem.

Is a socket 939 Athlon 64x2 4200+ for $60 a good deal?
And it's better than my current Venice 3800+ right?

Hey folks,

I have a friend and his wife who are looking for a new laptop and are thinking abou tthe following:
Toshiba T6600 4 GB mem,500 GB hard drive, 16" display, intel core 2 processor anybody that knows more about computers than me(that is all of you) have thoughts on this?????

Follow-up on budget and purpose for the computer:

we would like to spend less than $1000 ----$800 would be better.
The computer I wrote about was $599
Use - Internet = facebook and games
Print pictures -nothing fancy not a whole lot of editing
Writing resumes

What options are out there for these folks, and is what they're looking at worthwhile? I don't have an idea of what "gaming" is to them, but I'm sure it's nothing too recent.

They aren't to tech savy; and I'm betting that they aren't too close to any electronic stores. If this would be a mail order, it would need something with good tech support or return policy.

They don't need a toughbook, but their living conditions may loose heat from time to time or have the occasional mouse.

Finally, what are thoughts about 3 year warrenties?

Thanks for any help.

For $60, it's ok considering that it is an obsolete platform. These days $60 can get you a much better CPU in AM3 socket, but alas. As far as being better, depends....it's better in the sense that it's a dual-core chip as opposed to your single core one. It's kind of a wash with games that don't make use of dual-core...the 4200+ does perform better in games that do, but I wouldn't say it's a huge improvement considering the speed of the X2 4200+. If you're heavy in multi-tasking, video-editing, photoshop stuff, etc...then the dual-core will surely benefit in those areas making the CPU more worth it.

The big question for that Toshiba is what video card is in it, but I doubt it has one considering the price for it...most likely it's some garbage Intel Integrated Graphics Chipset, which you want to AVOID. If you want gaming caliber, then check out this notebook from none other than....Best Buy (odd I know):

Okay so the LaCie external hard drive I was going to buy is a no-no since the extra stuff I'll need for it went and doubled the price so I have my aim at a Iomega Extern Desktop. Any good?

Iomega drives are fine. They're mostly known for their "zip" drives, which have (fortunately -- those things were slow) largely been obsoleted by rewritable CD/DVD and flash. But their external hard drives are good. Well known in the Mac world.

I'm currently troubleshooting a problematic rig, and seeking any advice. The machine always displays a BSOD and then reboots during the Windows XP loading screen. I ran memtest86+ for several hours and I don't believe the 4 gigs of ram are to blame. I also get a bluescreen while the machine is loading files off of the XP disc.

I would be very grateful if someone could provide any insight, or suggest any routes to turn my troubleshooting towards. I'd be happy to provide whatever information might help.

Thanks for the quick response.

I recall reading somewhere that there is a way to prevent my machine from automatically rebooting in such a circumstance, so I can actually read the error. I'm having trouble finding any information about this, and haven't had any luck hunting through the BIOS for options.

Any advice?

Trying to boot from the UBCD4WIN have been flashing some text right before the machine reboots. I'm going to try booting off of a Linux live CD I know is in working order, so I'll see if I can get anything booting properly from CD.
