Hmm my 8800gtx seems to idle at 65 degrees but when I'm playing games it seems to hit (maximum 85) and with about half an hour of play I was averaging 80.8... that sound ok or a little warm?

Yeah I just changed it to the 64bit dxdiag.
@Kira Yamato Mine idle at about 55C generally with auto fan control. That should be about normal, however I much prefer to have it on manual fan control for mine at about 50%, keeps them around 40C.

Ok, as long as the ATI CCC shows it enabled, then its enabled. You can download GPU-Z to confirm it.

It's a little warm for my taste, but that's still fine. You could try replacing the TIM with some Arctic Cooling MX-3 (might be a good idea to buy new thermal pads for the VRAM too), or even look into aftermarket cooling. When I had my 8800GTX it never went above the max safe temps but still had problems with artifacts in the mid 80s.

What the...? all I want to do is edit a couple of thing for Dwarf Fortress and a visualizer for it, but my blasted PC keeps making every-[censored]-thing Read only!!! (which means I can't save my changes) Can someone help me?!

Note: I have already tried changing the properties from read-only only to have the system change right back to read-only.

You're fine. My 8800 GTX (prior to getting an aftermarket HSF set up) would idle in the 60s and hit 80C while gaming. This was in a very well ventilated full size case too. The G80 chip is expected to run hot. You really shouldn't have artifacts at those temps.

http://www.arctic-cooling.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=2_&mID=103&language=en The drop in temperature is amazing. Instead of 64C idle/80C load I get 38C idle/55C load (and that's OC'd). Massive drop in temperature. Unfortunately they discontinued that product and its very hard to find.

What would you do?

I've got an EVGA GTX 260 (216). I haven't been gaming very much lately and the most demanding games I have are Oblivion, Fallout 3, LotRO and WoW. Considering that and the cards from Nvidia on the horizon (and ATI's HD 5000 cards), should I eBay it? I should be able to get a fair price for it - its been lightly used for about five months. I'm thinking $125-$150.

I really shouldn't have bought it considering my games and the fact I have a perfectly good 8800 GTX - kind of a waste of money for so little performance gain. So, should I keep it or sell it whilst I can?

If you still have the 8800GTX and intend on getting a Radeon 5-series, then go ahead if you want. How about selling off the 8800GTX while you still can, then get the 5-series card, then sell off the GTX 260?

I'm pretty sure most games have hardware acceleration in their .ini files. Try turning it off there.

Not in this case. I really need to disable DirectDraw for the game to run properly.

Anyway I'll just do it manually.

Hi all,

With Windows 7 64-bit and Oblivion, I have lower FPS (5-10) in the presence of NPCs than in Windows XP. This seems to be CPU bound since when overclocking from 3.0GHz to 3.6GHz, the fps rise.

Is it related to my sound not being generated by the Sound Card but by the CPU? I even tried with Alchemy (adding Oblivion) and it doesn't change anything.

I agree that going from 58-55 FPS to 47-49 isn't catastrophic. But I was surprised. Anyone experienced this?

Thank,

Koldunic

Sentiment keeps me from doing so I suppose. Plus its been modded with an aftermarket HSF, so it might not fetch what a stock one would (and I don't want to put the old one back on and then thoroughly test it). I do think I'll get rid of that GTX 260 though and sit tight until the new Nvidia crop of cards comes out. Even if they turn out to not be for me it might put some downward pressure on graphics cards in general (to have some competition going again).

What would you guys recommend for a calendar application. I am trying to pick between Rainlendar, Thunderbird with the lightning extention, or Mozilla Sunbird. Sunbird forces you to put an end time for events but some I don't know how long they will be. Any recommendations? Just something lightweight as possiible but that does its job well.

So I've gotten this error three times today, never getting this before.
My computer restarts, twice after I nudged it, and boots up but doesn't get to the login page and says, "Chassis Intruded! No keyboard detected. Fatal error."
I can bump the case now and nothing happens so I'm not sure if my bumping twice before had any causation. Everything else seems perfectly fine besides.
What to do?

Some motherboards have a Chassis Intrusion jumper. Verify that the jumper is still in place. Reseat the jumper with the power off and the power cable reconnected.

So guyz...

:P

I found out about this cool thing that monitors do called http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_display_identification_data (well it's not technically something they do, but I lack a better word...), and I've found out that this thing is useful, among other things, to adjust the colour temperature, as can be seen in http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/5983/cccva.png, where I've ticked the box to use the EDID for colour temperature control (yay me!).

My question, for those in the know, is whether this EDID thing is useful for anything else? More precisely, if there are any other "boxes" I should "tick" or any options I should turn on to use this EDID for anything else (because I know it's obviously useful for many things even without my interference). :P

hmm any idea where to buy those things and how much they'd be? (I've never done aftermarket cooling... specially for a video card before)

ps anyone know a good way to do a gpu stress test... I wanna see how hot it's actually gonna get if I use it for a bit

You can use AC's http://www.arctic-cooling.com/catalog/where_to_buy.php?action=search®ion=8&country=10&type=1&x=57&y=9 at the top of the page. Though it's no guarantee as I think this has been discontinued. MSRP: US$ 59.90

P.S.

Apparently http://www.anitec.ca/product/10866/arctic-cooling-accelero-xtreme-8800-acclereoxtreme8800 Canadian site has them in stock for $55.95 Can.

What version of CCC is that? Mine doesn't have that many options.

Have to watch eBay I'd suppose. I looked all over the internet for one after I saw your post and came up empty. I got mine last spring for $49. It was a snap to install - I was finished in about 30 minutes with no "head-scratching" moments. :D There are other solutions, but nothing that was so specifically made for the 8800 series.

09.12, the latest AFAIK. Make sure you've installed your monitor's drivers too.

EDID settings are different in 2000/XP then they are in Vista/7. I don't believe you can change EDID options in Vista/7.

does this sound like a fried video card to you?

Yesterday I used my laptop right through the hottest part of the day (up to 46C, 115F) without and external cooling on it (except fo the room's fan). Later on I tried to play mordern warfare 2 on it (like i normally do) but after a few minutes in-game it will either lock up (sometimes with strange screen weirdness,) or just shut off. The sound will continue on for a few seconds then it too will loops and get stuck. After which the laptop is very hot where the video card is. Ive tried turning the graphics settings right down to the minimum but the same thing still happens.

Now this is still a new laptop so its under warrenty and shouldnt be hard to get repaired, I just want to have an idea of what is wrong it. If its not the video card, I think it might be the power supply. It run just fine for soing things like surfing the web, Im yet to test some more simple games on it.

My friend has an ATI HD 3850 in his computer but wants to upgrade. (he's rich so why not :P?) He wants to put a 4890 in aswell as his 3850. Those are both crossfire correct? Will it be better than just the 4890 in?

Can't Crossfire those two: their architectures are too different. Even if you could, it would be silly, because Crossfire works at the speed and capacity of the weaker card.

Here is a chart of the working combinations: http://game.amd.com/us-en/content/images/crossfirex/CF_combo_chart.jpg

My CCC has a totally different interface, and I run 9.12...

I guess it is because I run Windows 7.
