Have you checked the cables/connectors?

Yup. Even tried two different monitors.

So I'm going to build myself a new computer soon, and I've picked out most of the parts. I'm having trouble picking out what power supply I should get though.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128392 (I know it says it's unavailable, hopefully they'll be selling them again)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021

I'm going to be taking out my HD 4670 from my current computer and put it in the new one until that becomes obsolete, but I do plan on upgrading the graphics card at some point, maybe in a year or so. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371031, but I'm not sure if that'd be enough for say, a HD 5870 or whatever else ATI makes down the road. Should I splurge for one of the 850W PSUs that also come in combos with the case?

That PSU will be enough and it's of decent quality. No need for a 850W PSU for a single video card setup....overkill.

Thank you Tig, you're the best!

But I have another question. :hehe: I also was looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.335362 to save money, but would it be possible to replace the side panel on it with something I can see into?

I have a bad motherboard. There's issues with the DMI pool not updating despite BIOS updates, and also several PCIE slots are malfunctional/nonfunctional.

It's an AMD 790GX northbridge board. The nearest Microcenter has no 790GX chipset boards that I feel comfortable buying based on reviews from Newegg, but there's a 790X that got lots of rave reviews.

Can I replace with the 790X and not have any motherboard driver-related issues with Windows 7?

As to why I'm buying from Microcenter: I'd like to get it done soon (IE: this weekend), as the temporary solution I have involves moving my vid card to the second PCIE x16 slot, and moving my sound card out of the old-style PCI slot now covered by the vidcard heat sink, effectively sandwiching the poor card between two heatpigs: my vid card and the PSU (bottom-mounted). If I buy the new mobo from a storefront, I can get to it right away (well... on Saturday, when I have the time to)

Good case and PSU. No custom clear panels for sale though.

There's apparently a custom version of the Antec 300 with a clear panel though:

I don't see why you would have 790X motherboard issues with Windows 7. Just make sure you get the right socket for your chip. AM2+ CPUs do not work in straight up AM3 motherboards. AM3 motherboards are DDR3 RAM compatible only as well.

It's not the 790X issue, it's the fact that my current (and defective) motherboard is a 790GX, a different chipset. I already have an AM3 chip in it that works (thank goodness for that). My system already had mobo drivers installed when it was (or more appropriately as of this post, 'still is') running a 790GX.

I'm hoping that the drivers are pretty much the same between the two and Windows will be fine with it... I hope.

I also need to find a CPU compatibility list and make sure my CPU isn't on the list

I am taking absolutely zero controllable chances with this second board, I don't want to go through the hassle of gutting my computer a third time. I want to make sure that I can plug 'n play with this other board (minus Windows thinking the vidcard and sound card are "new" devices) and make sure that the CPU is compatible. If it's not compatible with the old BIOS, then I'm not taking the chance on the board not having the new BIOS.

AMD chipset drivers are unified. Windows may need to be reactivated. If you need to call Microsoft, just state the previous motherboard was defective.

Okay, that's a relief.

Anyone know where I can churn up a CPU compatibility list on that board? The search function on the Asus website is useless. :brokencomputer:

OR I could just ask here...

The board I'm eyeballing is thls:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131402&cm_re=M4A79XTD%2d%5f%2d13-131-402%2d%5f%2dProduct

Is this processor (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103674) of the "C3" category that the topmost 1-egg review warns about? That's what I have.

I did some searching for a "C3" processor, and they seem distinct from those that are not such a class. Mine there has nothing mentioning it, so I'm hoping I'm correct.

Ah.. You edited your post.

That motherboard supports up to the AMD Phenom II x4 965 (C3)

The processor listed is revision C2.

***

I believe the C3 revision/stepping has a slightly lower stock voltage, so it is possibly cooler and more easily overclocked.

You posted as I edited. :) The edit in my previous post has both my prospective new mobo and my current CPU. The link to the mobo also has a 1/5 egg review concerning BIOS incompatibilities with a certain class of Phenom II Blacks (confirmed by an Asus rep in the review's followup), and I'm ascertaining whether or not mine is of that class. It otherwise has sterling reviews and has a Customer's Choice award.

O.k. I got an odd one. I had a computer that was given to me by a friend, I had it for awhile and it always had "interference" on the monitor. I attributed it to the fact that my computer desk is situated right under my apts. breaker panel box. Well, I recently got a "newer" computer, and have it set up in the same spot. No interference. I gave my old computer to my folks and got it set up for them. I turn it on and there's the damned interference again. I talked to a tech buddy of mine, and he told me to try different resolutions and refresh rates. Well, I got it to go away but at a resolution of 800x600. No good. It's a real pain in the ass having to scroll horizontal to read webpages and the like. I can get it to almost go away in 1024x768 with a 75mhz refresh, but it's not perfect. Any change in refresh from 75mhz either up or down, makes it worse. Any Ideas of what might be causing this and any remedies?

I forgot to add that my "tech" buddy said that it may be "noise" from components of the mobo. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Noisy video. Are you using a VGA connection? It shouldn't happen on DVI or HDMI.

If you have VGA noise problems, and they track the computer, not the cable or monitor, try replacing the graphics card (if you're using onboard video, try an add-in graphics card) or the power supply.

The Phenom II x4 965 C3 requires a BIOS update on that motherboard. It's fine with the C2 (though the C3 stepping is the better CPU), but if you were to get a C3, you would have to have a different CPU handy to bring the motherboard up far enough to flash the BIOS.

I use this page for ASUS motherboard CPU support: http://support.asus.com.tw/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

C3-stepping CPUs have a part number that ends in M, as seen here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_Phenom_microprocessors#Phenom_II_series and here: http://www.guru3d.com/article/phenom-ii-x4-965-be-revision-c3-review-test/

Newegg's specifications are never trustworthy, but it appears that the retail-boxed 955 they are selling is the C2, and the 965 they are selling is the C3:
955 (yours): HDZ955FBGIBOX: according to CPU World, that corresponds to the "I" (C2) part number: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Phenom%20II%20X4%20955%20Black%20Edition%20-%20HDZ955FBK4DGI%20%28HDZ955FBGIBOX%29.html

Most likely its an CRT so VGA. Its caused by magnetic interference (ie high current electrical panel). There exists special shields for CRT monitors, but they are not easily available. Either move the monitor or get a new monitor that is digital or not prone to magnetic interference.

I once had an older board with a cheap noisy chipset fan. I found a solution involving an older aftermarket graphics card heat sink fan that had a similar mounting. Had to dremel it a bit to make the card fit.

Alright. All signs point to my chip being a C2.

Hope I have better luck with this board tomorrow...

The poster reported that a different computer in the same place did not exhibit the problem, and the original computer moved to a different place still exhibited the problem. He didn't mention moving the monitor (or its cable, if the cable isn't captive).

I suspect the noise is being coupled through the video circuits, or through the power supply.

Didn't specify if the monitor was changed/moved. It could be a cable problem, or something else. I am not ruling anything out. Of course if its a CRT (if the monitor is the problem) then chances of correcting a cable problem is limited. :)

Thanks guys. I had a gnawing suspicion it might be the power supply. I'm gonna try that first. If not, I'll have to try an add on card. Again, thanks for the replies.

I read somewhere at some point that you can put a short-slot PCIE card into a long slot. For instance.... put a PCIE 1x card into a PCIE 8x slot. Is this true? The only available PCIE slot for a new sound card I have is the secondary PCIE slot for a Crossfire setup (which I disbelieve in, along with SLI, so no loss).

Vista problem.

I let Windows Update do its thing last night, and installed whatever updates were recommended (I have the 'important-only' option selected) as per usual. When I turned on my computer today, the normal start-up and auto-login (only one profile) occurred, but not with the results it should: as opposed to my desktop, with the preferences I've selected, RocketDock, background, etc., I get the default Vista setup like you'd expect on a new computer. When I go through the Start Menu shortcuts to Documents, Pictures, Music, and the like, Windows Explorer says the directories are empty. When I go through C:\Users\[Me], all of my information is still there. This has happened once before, but last time, a simple restart was all that was needed to correct the issue. I've restarted already, and still have the Vista default.

Not sure if it's related, but every time I open a Firefox window, it re-confirms that it is the default browser, so it obviously isn't saving as it should.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

It sounds to me like your user profile is corrupted. Happened to me a few times on Windows XP, though not yet on Windows Vista/7

The problem is usually fixed (at least temporarily) by rebooting the computer. Sometimes it persists and/or will come back, to permanently fix it you must do this:

Well, my turn for hardware advice. I'm not too familiar with lower end hardware though, and I need you folks to downgrade me. Need to pocket some monies for other stuff.

Phenom II X3 720
Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P
EVGA GTX 285 SC
4GB OCZ Reaper DDR2-800
Corsair TX750
Auzentech X-Fi Prelude

Is there anything that I can downgrade to that'd still keep me gaming, but pocket a decent amount of money? I'm thinking about a 5770, but I can't imagine dropping the 720 will net me much money at all. I know I can get $100 for the Prelude rather easily, but it'd be one of the last things to go.

Open to suggestions though.

In nVidia cards, the GTX 260 (Core 216) costs about half the price of the GTX 285, for about 20% less performance. It would still exceed any reasonable expectations. In ATI cards, the 5850 would save you $50 or better, and the 5770 would save you $200 or better. I wouldn't go lower.

You won't make any worthwhile savings on the CPU or motherboard. You can save some on memory if you relax your requirement to CAS 9 (OCZ Reaper is CAS 7). That won't affect performance in any way you'd notice, because the important thing with memory is to have enough of it. You can save some on the power supply, too; you don't need 750W (550W is plenty), and there are lots of Antec, Corsair, and Xclio power supplies in that range that sell for less.

So I'm just doing some pontificating here.... What should I upgrade next on my comp? I know it's gonna be graphics card, but once I upgrade past where I am, I'm gonna need a new power source. How difficult is that? Is getting a new power source gonna be too much for my CPU or my motherboard or something and then I have to upgrade that? :cold: I sure hope not......

Here's a little dxdiag for ya. :)
