The problem with that, is that when I do a hardware upgrade (Don't know when it will be, but I will be), I will most likely be upgrading my mobo for DDR3 ram. This would cause complications.


You just call MS and tell them the you no longer own that PC. (Motherboard. Reason: Sold/broke/whatever. )

They will give you a 30 some odd digit number to put in when it complains it's not the same system during activation. It the re-registers itself with the new hardware.

1 simple phone call is all it takes.

Now someone/you else will have to buy/download an OS for that board to use it. (As in Linux, not pirated.)

P.S.

If this were a pre-build, Dell/HP/etc, you could not do this, (Only they could.) but you being the system builder in this case can.

Doesn't sound like overheating. 55C is perfectly acceptable for the GPU. My HD 3870 gets to ~70C (depends on game) and it never overheats.

Most likely you are just experiencing the maximum performance from your GPU. It only has 512MB of VRAM so running L4D2 at maximum graphics may not work long term. Try reducing settings slightly to see if you get a more stable framerate.

So, running at max graphics, it would work fine at first then, I guess for a lack of a better term, "fill up", and I'd lose performance?

Yes, once VRAM is maxed then graphics data is stored in main memory (RAM). Standard RAM is slower than graphics memory plus is must communicate through the North Bridge.

Ello peoples

I was wondering if someone could help me out here

I'm out of the loop on the current tech so I don't know what to start with here

I'm looking to build a desktop for work for lets say max $500 Canadian

overiding concern is decent amounts of ram and processing power as this is mostly a pc for the cash register, but we also use it for printing, minor image editing and surfing the web

we already have a harddrive (though I suppose a new one wouldn't hurt) keyboard, mouse, monitor and OS

really just need the actual tower

I can build it myself

long story short... whats the best pc I can get for 500 if I can build it myself

I tested my card with 3DMark06 (texture fill rate), I get 45-48 GTexels per seconds while the 5850 is supposed to have 52.2 GT/s. Is it normal?

Faster clock (800 vs. 725 MHz) may have something to do with it. They may also be running at higher voltage to accommodate the faster clock.

I've been checking games on Can you run it (probably all know this but it checks your system to see if you can play a game) and most times it says the only problem my system has is that the OS I use Windows 7 is not supported. What does that really mean? Is it not compatible? Other than that generally my video card could be better, but I think I could play a handful or more of the games that I've checked there.

There's a decent chance it means nothing. The only time that site is really useful is if someone has no clue how the hardware in their PC relates to the specs on the box, because that's all it really does, compares and then shows you some inaccurate charts.

I'm guessing that the games you're checking into came out before Windows 7 and when it's checking the official requirements, there's no mention of Windows 7 as it didn't exist. Most games will work on Windows 7. If you wanna list some of the games we can probably tell you if they run, or you can probably find those answers if you Google "_____ Windows 7 compatibility."

Thanks that'd help. Should I post my system dxdiag thingie. I want to see if Psychonauts, OB, and maybe Risen, WOW and a few others I tried but forgot to go look up again would work. This i'm just seeing if it can play. I am on a netbook, but I have attachments for a mouse, which I use all them time, and a disk drive I can plug in.

I don't know about a new case, but I'm pretty sure you would have to get a low-profile card, but the power supply in that computer is too weak for... well anything really. Newegg only has 2 listings to low profile cards too, as far as I can tell.

EDIT: Seems I misread the options, there were two low-profile cards but 112 low-profile ready cards, whatever that means...

If its a slim line case chances the choices for power supply replacements are pretty limited and most aren't much better than what you already have (in capacity).

Even if you got a new case, you're probably find it difficult, if not impossible, to stick the motherboard from your Acer into it. It's not the usual Micro-ATX or standard ATX form factor since this is a slim-line PC design...more like Mini-ITX, which require tiny cases like your current Acer. You're probably better off changing the motherboard as well considering how limited the expandability is on the stock one.

If you want a low profile card that will work with your system as is, this would be the most I'd get:

Vista problem.

I let Windows Update do its thing last night, and installed whatever updates were recommended (I have the 'important-only' option selected) as per usual. When I turned on my computer today, the normal start-up and auto-login (only one profile) occurred, but not with the results it should: as opposed to my desktop, with the preferences I've selected, RocketDock, background, etc., I get the default Vista setup like you'd expect on a new computer. When I go through the Start Menu shortcuts to Documents, Pictures, Music, and the like, Windows Explorer says the directories are empty. When I go through C:\Users\[Me], all of my information is still there. This has happened once before, but last time, a simple restart was all that was needed to correct the issue. I've restarted already, and still have the Vista default.

Not sure if it's related, but every time I open a Firefox window, it re-confirms that it is the default browser, so it obviously isn't saving as it should.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

O.k. I got an odd one. I had a computer that was given to me by a friend, I had it for awhile and it always had "interference" on the monitor. I attributed it to the fact that my computer desk is situated right under my apts. breaker panel box. Well, I recently got a "newer" computer, and have it set up in the same spot. No interference. I gave my old computer to my folks and got it set up for them. I turn it on and there's the damned interference again. I talked to a tech buddy of mine, and he told me to try different resolutions and refresh rates. Well, I got it to go away but at a resolution of 800x600. No good. It's a real pain in the ass having to scroll horizontal to read webpages and the like. I can get it to almost go away in 1024x768 with a 75mhz refresh, but it's not perfect. Any change in refresh from 75mhz either up or down, makes it worse. Any Ideas of what might be causing this and any remedies?

Have you checked the cables/connectors?
