I've been looking for a pretty small microcontroller board to do some little projects with, and found this http://www.pjrc.com/teensy/ product that looks pretty decent.

Does anyone have any experience with these or comments about the board, or, on the off chance, know of a similarly equipped device with an even smaller size?

@Ninja Monkey: Retail version is still only one computer at a time.

:( Well that svcks, just adds another thing to my list of things to buy. Ah well. Now I have to figure out which version to get too.

Usually there is no issues using a OEM version and perform some upgrades on the computer. The only thing that puts up a red flag is changing the motherboard. If the automatic activation system doesn't work, you just have to call Microsoft [India]. In the agreement you can use another motherboard if the original one breaks and the replacement is a direct replacement or similar.

Casual upgrading doesn't warrant a Retail version. The only reason to get a Retail version is if you want better tech support from Microsoft [cough].

@Ninja Monkey: Retail version is still only one computer at a time.

Well when I do upgrade my computer, I will be upgrading my mobo. If the process is as simple as just calling M$ and giving them some details, then it shouldn't be a problem.

I'll probably order W7 home premium OEM. $104  It's as cheap as I can get it.

The main competitor is http://arduino.cc/en/Guide/HomePage, which has a more extensive line of products, including Ethernet, WiFi, and motor control interfaces. Both Arduino and Teensy use Atmel AVR controllers, which are easy to program and well suited for their use.

If you're just wanting to switch well-behaved loads of up to 20mA at 5V (100mA total across all pins), or voice-grade anolog (7-10 bits at 4-16 kHz sample rate), the Teensy is the better deal. The Teensy can also run code written for the Arduino.

If you need any of the more specialized features available in Arduino's line, you're better off with that. There are lots of Arduino distributors; one is http://www.nkcelectronics.com/arduino.html in Florida.

Quick question, I have a 140 GB harddrive(small I know...) and only 23 GB left.

The thing is, I looked through my program files, and everything. Whered the other 100 GB go? I run Vista but does the OS really take up almost 100 GB of space?

I had to uninstall Oblivion, Spellforce 2, and a host of other games to regain some space(had 7.x GB before) to install X3, now I don't even know if it will be able to fit.

Use http://windirstat.info/ to see what is taking up most of your space, then delete as appropriate...

Sure you read that right? Based on the specs, that system comes with a 700 Watter. While it's probably one of their cheaper end units, it should still be enough for a GTS 250. Should replace it eventually though with something more quality, but it should be fine for some time. This is one of the crappier things about Ibuypower's and CyberpowerPC's off the shelf systems...hardware is great for the price, but they always seem to use lower than average PSUs in them.

I was talking about the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229171C you linked to, which has a 500w PSU. I am looking at the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227218 one, though. PSUs are a pretty easy fix, though, so I'll probably invest in a Rosewill or something down the road.

From what the people in this thread have told me, Rosewill's are a no-no. Invest in a thermaltake instead

It sounds like, based on what you're saying and what I've read, that the Teensy probably is quite fine for me to use. Now if I could just make it a little bit thinner shorter... =)

Thanks!

You can get the AVR chip by itself; they come in various package sizes. The only ones you can work with without having an elaborate lab are the DIP's. The most widely available of these is the 28-pin, which measures 0.3 x 1.4 inches.

I have a birthday coming up, and hopefully some new parts for my PC with it.
So, I need a few recommendations.

1. A new HDD. My current one is 150 Gb but I need a new one. How much space could I get for relatively cheap? (Cheap = >$100)
2. I want to be able to play Oblivion and FO3 on max settings, possible even with some mods that bump the graphics higher. What kind of upgrade would I need for that?

I currently have an Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT video card, and (according to the dxdiag) 3072Mb RAM.

Digging up an old topic:
I ran the Small FFT test two nights in a row for 7-8 hours and I got no errors, now what?

I am still pretty sure that the problem lies with my CPU, since it had been running for 100? for at least 1 whole day.

I am trying to troubleshoot a problem with video playback, where it seems a little more "blocky" that usual, but only on encoded formats such as flash and avi. I think the CPU is the culprit because DVDs are fine, and they don't need any extra decoding because they are uncompressed right?

In Prime95, a failure on Large or Mixed and no failure on Small FFTs clears the CPU and implicates the Northbridge or RAM. I would be testing your RAM next. http://www.memtest.org/ (version 4.00 came out last year) is very easy and thorough.

Ok I ran the Memtest and it completed the whole test with no errors, now what?

Should I run the Small FFT test for longer this time? I keep forgetting to run it while I am sleeping, so 8 hours is the longest it has run... maybe it needs more time to run its course.

Ok quick question.

If I use the student discount to get Windows 7, will it work?

Everything worked, and I have it added to the checkout cart. Though the only thing, it's the upgrade version. Checkout cart reads as follows:

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade - 64 bit * Electronic Download	$64.95Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade 64 Bit Disk Kit	* Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade 64 Bit Disk Kit Suggested if you do not have a good broadband connection or would like to have the software available for future installation.	$13.00

Now, I'm using Windows 7 RC. Will the upgrade still work? I thought I remember reading that the upgrade only works if you have vista or xp. Can anybody give me some info on this? And only if you're 100% positive.

I really don't want to http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116716

If the upgrade doesn't work out for you, you can always get the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116754 for $105.

The problem with that, is that when I do a hardware upgrade (Don't know when it will be, but I will be), I will most likely be upgrading my mobo for DDR3 ram. This would cause complications.

If your upgrading your motherboard then wait to purchase the operating system. Like I said, a direct replacement or similar is only valid if you motherboard is defective or broken.

Well a Radeon HD 4890, which can easily run fallout 3 on High-Ultra High, will set you back about $150-$250. But there seems to be a shortage of them on sites like Newegg. But you'd be better off getting a more up to date card with DirectX 11, like the Radeon 5000 series, though I don't know much about them so it'd be best if someone else here helped you with that.

Well I know even my 4670 can run Oblivion on highest settings without problems, but I can't speak for Fallout 3.

I need a new router, or more specifically ADSL modem.
My current one is a peice of crap that I just discovered has proprietary firmware on it that disables any firmware updates, so I can't even fix the problems I'm having!

It needs to be wireless, cheap, but reliable. And if it was a cisco router that would be dandy, but thats not too important.

Any recommendations?

I'm having an issue with Left4Dead 2 and my fps. When I first start playing, everything is fine. Single Player runs at 60FPS and multiplayer runs at ~40fps, everything maxed out. After about 30-40 minutes of playing, I seems like any "light" causes a massive drop in fps. My flashlight has to stay off and every time I fire the gun, the muzzle flash causes an fps drop. This drops me to 15-20fps for as long as the "light" exists.

I decided to do some temperature monitoring tonight. I used RivaTuner to set the GPU fan at 100%.

Sitting in lobby:
GPU - Fan at 100% - 41C
CPU - Fan at 2300RPM - 39C

After each map:
GPU - Fan at 100% - 47C
CPU - Fan at 2600RPM - 48C

Max it hit at any time:
GPU - Fan at 100% - 54C
CPU - Fan at 2700 - 50C

After I quit the game, I turned the GPU fan back to auto (25-30%):
CPU dropped down to 35C.
GPU increased to 55C from 50C.

I'm starting to think it's an overheating issue and that my air flow is partly to blame.

Here's my DxDiag (sorry, I can't get the codebox to work >.<):

After about 5-8 minutes of the GPU fan at 100% now, the GPU temperature has dropped to 39C with the CPU temperature at 35C.

So, what's the verdict?

Does anyone know if the PlayStation 3 requires you to format the HDD after installing it? I'd like to throw in a different HDD and then eventually come back to my original drive, but not if it'll force me to format.

Edit- Got an answer elsewhere.

[...]

So, what's the verdict?

Doesn't sound like overheating. 55C is perfectly acceptable for the GPU. My HD 3870 gets to ~70C (depends on game) and it never overheats.

Most likely you are just experiencing the maximum performance from your GPU. It only has 512MB of VRAM so running L4D2 at maximum graphics may not work long term. Try reducing settings slightly to see if you get a more stable framerate.

I would be very happy with those temps btw.
If it bothers you very much give the card/s an arctic silver treatment and it should drop a little, have began to do that to mine, drops of temps with noticeble amount and improving with time,2 weeks estimated give or take before full effect.
of course if anyone have a better paste suggestion than arctic silver I?m all ears :)
