Just a note - I deleted a nonsense spam post and the responses to it. Don't do that in this thread, okay?. Thanks.

Why do my bosses documents keep moving out her My Documents after she's put them in?

She literally drags them in there before leaving work, comes in in the morning and they're back on her desktop. It doesn't happen every day - but most days. Have to admit, I'm entire befuddled. I'm not a tech expert but it's very odd. I googled and it may be something to do with the fact that her laptops hooked up with a monitor? I dunno.

Anyone with suggestions will be showered with cupcakes and Emzloves. xx

Does she shut the computer down when she leaves, or does she let it run overnight? That type of action looks a lot like what happens when a computer crashes and reboots. Windows tends to default to the last desktop it saw during a clean shutdown plus any new additions (her files for the day).

If she's shutting it down, then I don't know. I've had both Vista and W7 rearrange icons when rebooted, but never had files come back out of folders.

I am going to best buy later tonight in order to get an adaptor to use my wireless xbox 360 controller with my laptop. Any suggestions on what to buy, and any tips for setting this up?

Thanks

It would probably be close to the same price to just buy a wired one that you can plug straight into your laptop instead of needing an overpriced adapter.

Yeah, just buy a Wired controller. I've done both, wired and wireless. Go wired.

I hear the wireless ones don't play quite as nice with Windows either, compared to straight up wired though USB.

Although I'm biased. I've got two, a normal white wired controller and a flashy http://www.amazon.com/TRON-Wired-Controller-Xbox-360-Collectors/dp/B003WTMR7A/ref=sr_1_3?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1303079230&sr=1-3 which did NOT cost that much back when I got it.

Edit: On the note of my GPU, I think that http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127566 is supposed to be around 8.5" long. Definitely will fit. There is also a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131376&cm_re=powercolor_6850-_-14-131-376-_-Product that's 8.5" too, so I'm back to my original dilemma on which brand to get. :P

The adapter works, I've used it. Vista 32bit, no problems, diddnt use the disk it comes with, just downloaded drivers/software through windows.

Hey guys, I have a budget of £500 (GBP) and want to cutom build my own desktop for gaming. Would this graphics card, an http://www.ebuyer.com/product/230557, allow me to play newer games (crutially Skyrim, although I know that specs haven't been released) at a high resolutions, assuming it was accompanied by a decent rig.

OK, I loaded the newest game I have- DA:O- on a system with a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127521. I ran 1280x1024 (old 19" monitor), 8x AA, max eveything else with no problems. Maybe someone can decide if this is good enough for what you want with a bit of savings for other components.

The GTS 450 shouldn't even be considered for that price, there are better cards to be had. Also, 1280x1024 is a really low resolution, people still play at that? :P

All right, so, I'm finally getting sick of AVG's new favorite habit: randomly deciding game .exes are malware. So...I'd like to look into other free anti-virus options that are, hopefully, much less annoying in terms of false positives and occasional resource hogging. Trouble is I haven't looked into free AV programs in the past couple years, since I was happy with AVG until now, and it seemed like every good comment about programs like Avira was matched by several negative ones.

I'm busy looking up comparisons and the like at the moment, but I could use a third party opinion or two. Anyone have any suggestions? How's Microsoft Security Essentials?

I believe Avast is a pretty good free one, I'll wait for Defron to come by and run numbers.

Ok so my dad finally wants to upgrade to W7 using this upgrade disc he got at the time when he bought his laptop. Now I'm not too sure on how to go about this. Is it basically performing a clean install or what? If someone could walk me through this, that'd be cool.

Avast! and MSE are the only two free AVs worth considering anymore in my book. They both take two different approaches to antivirus: Avast! is much more about proactive defense, with lots of shields, whereas MSE is more retroactive, but shines in a very low false-positive count along with a very low missed infections rate.

Basically Avast! is best if you want a more "complete" package and MSE is best if you want a very solid AV with a very low false-positive rate.

Don't read this the wrong way: Avast! is a solid AV (but does undeniably get more false positives), and MSE is full-featured (just not offering as much as Avast!). Neither would I say is inherently better than the other (which is why I recommend both of them), but rather both serve a different type of user.

Hmm. Well, I definitely prefer proactive to retroactive when it comes to my AVs, so it looks like Avast! it is then. Thanks! :)

Not skipped over...just nobody answered it yet. :P

As for upgrading to Win7 - there are two options here: to do a straight upgrade, which leaves your files, etc. intact, or to do a clean install, which does exactly what it says on the tin. If what your father has is just an upgrade disc, then doing an upgrade is probably the only option you'll have. Otherwise, you'll get the option to upgrade or clean install. If you do have the option I'd recommend a clean install myself.

Make sure all your data is backed up before hand (to an external drive or DVDs if you're hard pressed), stick the disc in the drive and go. It's really pretty painless.

I use it and have no complaints. I downloaded MSE by mistake through Windows Update then decided to keep it. It gets decent reviews. I went years without running anything, and remained virus free but figured it's not hurting anything nor is it a drain on resources. This rig has more than enough to spare anyway.

Yes, select 'Custom install' and treat it like any other Windows install you have done in the past.

So just browsing PC parts looking to make my own with some money I am about to come into. Here's some of the stuff I am looking at so far.

The PSU is the one I currently have and was going to reuse in my new PC.

I would like to say I shouldn't need to post in this thread since I am a IT technician for the Army but really most of my training is networking(CCNA) and Sec+. I have never built my own PC before appreciate any advice/help without making yet another topic for it.

I've got that case, you'll have no problems with room in that thing, and the cable management is very nice even though it can get cramped pretty bad in the little area they give you. Still I would recommend it for sure. I'd go ahead and get a 200mm fan from them to go in the side panel. I've also got that HDD, and its bit loud, though I'm not sure if that's the relatively flimsy HDD rails in the case or the drive itself. I haven't been bothered by it though.

Good, good. My current case drives me nuts with the size and the cable management. So that case is definite and I will look into the fan.

Not bad, but I must make mention that AMD's Bulldozer line-up is a couple months away and I do highly suggest you to wait a bit if you can. If not, that's understandable too. Bulldozer is AM3+ processor line-up that will compete with Intel's Sandybridge line-up and it will require an AM3+ motherboard with a 900 series chipset to utilize all the CPU's features. There is still some heated debate on whether Bulldozer will work with standard AM3 socket motherboards...some say some Asus boards (thru BIOS update) will but will disable special power-saving features, while others say it won't at all. I say just wait for the boards with the full support if you want Bulldozer. Up to this point, there hasn't been a whole lot of official info given on Bulldozer and compatibility but it is coming.

Now there are a couple AM3+ motherboards on the market that you can consider if you're dead set on getting that Phenom X4 965:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007625+600138080&QksAutoSuggestion=&ShowDeactivatedMark=False&Configurator=&IsNodeId=1&Subcategory=22&description=&Ntk=&CFG=&SpeTabStoreType=&srchInDesc=

These boards come with the "black socket" that supports AM3+ CPUs. They will also support AM3 CPUs.

I find the Samsung F3 1TB to be more cost effective than that Caviar Black. Not to say it isn't an excellent drive in its own right, but that extra 32MB cache is not really giving you much more:

I posted this in here about 4 months ago but didn't get any help, I hope I get some help this time because only you guys will be able to figure it out, it requires a tech savy person and that isn't me.

My computer BSODed today, after 4 months of not BSODing. The last day it did was December 29th, that month it BSODed 7 times and I couldn't figure out the problem. I downloaded and installed new drivers for my BIOS, wireless adapter, graphics card etc. Uninstalled programs that I thought could be related to the BSOD and after the 29th I didn't have one until today. The first BSOD happened in September, 2 that month then nothing until the December BSODs. I am truly at a loss as to what could be causing this. Nothing has changed temp wise, program wise..anything wise except graphics drivers and the last ones I had installed were a month ago. I ran windows memory diagnostic (cause memtest86 is way too damn complicated for me) and it gave me no errors..so I don't know what the problem could be.

The BSODs are IRQL and Non page fault or stop code x50. These are the ones I get all the time. Blue Screen View always points to a different file, which leads me to believe that it isn't a certain file causing it but something else. I just can't figure out what that might be. Sure it could still be RAM and really that's my only guess. Because I don't know what would cause it to BSOD 7 times in December, not do it for 4 months then randomly do it again. I'm sure it'll happen a couple more time this month then stop altogether for a few months again..that seems to be the reoccurring thing. I just wish I could figure out what was causing it, because it doesn't make any sense to me.
