The lack of an "Oh Crap!" enemy is a bit disappointi

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 12:29 am

Remember the first time you ran into a Deathclaw in Fallout 3...or the more vicious Deathclaws of New Vegas? You always had that [snip ]reaction. Aside from early level run-ins with sabre tooth cats, you don't really get much of that in Skyrim. Once you hit level 40, you can pretty much annihilate everything in your path. In Fallout, you were never really strong enough, aside from using major explosives, to just totally destroy Deathclaws without a sweat. I guess the fact that you can make your character extremely overpowered via enchanting and smithing plays a big role in that. It's a bit disappointing.

Frost Trolls, Bears, and Spriggins give me that feeling at low levels.

Dwarven centurions definitely gave me that moment the first time I met one. The master versions are still giving me a run for my money.

Yeah you have those moments at low levels, but not any at higher levels. Deathclaws were always a threat to kill you in 2 strikes, even at max level.

I kind of miss an enemy that inspired a sense if dread the way the deathclaw did, but at least in this game the enemies sneak up on you and scare you more often.

Well there is the Dwemer Centarians that are rather difficult to kill and I still run in circles around them, I guess I just find them so fascinating I overlook the dread factor.

I always kind of miss/don't-miss Greater Bonewalkers.

They weren't bad becuase they could kill you. They were actually kind of weak in that repsect.

It was just that if you so much as came into a millisecond of contact with one you could say goodbye to your Strength stat, encumberance, and ability to move. Back in Morrowind, even when I was a God among mortals, I would still cast Levitation and get the hell out of the way when I saw one of those.

In Skyim I don't get that feeling because nothing can really tear up your stats like that. Although I guess the unexpected Dragon Priest totally counts as an "OH FU-" enemy. :P

I wish they made dragons the "deathclaw" of Skyrim. They were at low levels, but once you reach past 40, like you mentioned, it gets pretty easy. They quickly turned from awesome to disappointing. I love the game for many reasons, just not this one...

Briarhearts can be beaten by pickpocketing the heart off of them but yeah they are trouble.

I agree. When I played as a sword and board melee guy, I thought they weren't all that bad. Now as mage, they're one of the few NPC's that I have difficulty fighting with. They tear through my summons like a hot knife through butter.

when you hit top level or even mid in fallout3 deathclaws were not hard to kill and definitely not jolt reacting.

i do wish they would have added more high level enemies with better a.i., however.

Every draugr dungeon I go into at level 52 has groups of two, three or four shouting Deathlords and Death Overlords blowing me all over the place. I wish there were Deathclaws in this game. I'm sick to death of feeling like a ping pong ball.

Even in middling levels Steam Centurions, Dragon Priests, and higher level Dragons give me pause.

Skyrim doesn't really have a high level gotcha! ambush enemy like deathclaws (although at lower levels the cats certainly fill this roll). Centurions and Dragons are generally visible well before they attack, which in my opinion just heightens the tension.

They might not be [snip] enemies when you see them coming, but its when you don't see them lol

I guess I'm lucky I'm not as skillful a gamer as you guys becuase I get that feeling all the time. Now I don't have any characters 40 plus level ( most in 20s a few low 30s) yet but you know by that point you should feel pretty confident.

Elder Dragons and Briarhearts are still a challenge to my level 51 Khajiit. I did have a little bit of trouble yesterday with a master vampire too.

But how hard should an individual enemy be to kill. Should it take only people that have super enchanted armour and weapons that can kill it after a tough fought battle and if so then how many of this type of character should there be. You also could not have this super enemy in a cave or dungeon because not everybody will be wearing super enchanted armour and weapons to defeat it. So there does have to be a certain level of difficulty for the enemy so that they can be killed by all the different playing styles rather than just one smithed out enchanted one..

imo, no.

higher/est level enemies should only be able to be beaten by highly skilled, high level characters with the correct equipment and ability.

otherwise, run.
