The long string of recent hacking attacks.

Post » Mon Jun 13, 2011 3:37 pm

Well I don't know if this will or will not reach the forums, but as a precaution, I just changed my pass... Maybe I will do the same with Steam and other accounts I have :S

Not a bad idea

If we know who is doing all of the hacking why isn't something being done?

EDIT: With all of these hackings going on and nobody getting caught sounds like everyone is lieing or something else is going on.

Apparently some of the guys behind the attack on PSN where caught in Spain.

Good, hopefully they get a few years of jail-time. They would if it was anything I was in control of, really dislike such self zealous actions that only do harm but no good. If they need to protest they can do it in other ways.

Well what can you do? Are there really laws on the internet? Their twitter could be banned and they could have their domain name stripped, but that would only stop them doing these things publicly.

What I don't get is how anybody can have such a problem with Brink that they decide to attack Bethesda/ZeniMax. I know it wasn't such a great success of a release, but it's not like they sent out the game with dead kittens in place of disks.

Strip the domain name, they will pop up in another place, (or still accessible by just the IP for those who know it). Lulzsec has admitted that they really dont go after people for any particular reason, they just do it because they can. For the lulz.

Why has Lulzsec not been collectively arrested?

Because arresting a large body of people on the Internet is fairly difficult. Assuming they are using tor or a VPN/Proxy service, its extremely difficult to tell who is who.

Going by what I've heard of them thus far, they sound like a group of troll hackers who are in it only to rile the attention of the media and video game communities. So far, they don't seem very harmful, just annoying.

The three people caught in Spain were not behind the PSN attacks. They were arrested for hacking other Sony websites.

I realise that, they're basically just trolling on a huge scale. But I assumed with the Brink hashtag, and with the name-calling, that they have some issue with Beth/SD/whoever. I believe a tweet or two earlier they said something about "the hand" being bitten.

I propose we form our own anti-hacker-hacking league. We would target only hackers and hack them with Manhacks.

Sound good?

I far prefer groups in it for the "Lulz" rather than the money. I find it all rather funny :P

I can appreciate that they're doing it all for [censored] & giggles rather taking what measly money I may have lying around online... but it's all such a pain in the ass, especially when you're on PS3, play Brink and visit the Beth forums frequently like me. :sadvaultboy: Pretty much everything I do when I'm bored has been targeted.

As an up-and-coming psychologist I am fascinated by both LulzSec and Anonymous, simply because they (claim) to be leaderless social movements.

That being said, I just invested in a password manager. :P

How can we be sure that they don't sell information they acquire? And even if they just do it for the heck of it, hacking is still a criminal act.

What they are doing is indeed a criminal act, however hacking in general is not necessarily illegal (hacking is a very broad subject).

And what Yacoby is getting at is: better some chaos group than a known criminal group that will undoubtedly use the information for sinister things.

Really, though, this needs to all be a wakeup call to the industry: You are NEVER too small to be a target.

They hacked the NHS recently, and they seemed very......civil about it. http://www.h-online.com/security/news/item/NHS-administrator-passwords-captured-by-LulzSec-1259087.html

They release some of it onto their website. Freely available to be downloaded by anyone. :ahhh:

That's what they should do all the time in my opinion, hack the site and then tell the Admins how they did it so it doesn't happen again. It's much more useful than just causing trouble.

Mmm, true, should've been more specific.

But again, how can we know they won't use any information they gain for sinister things? They said in the NHS article StarForce9 linked that they just sit on the admin passwords. What for? Blackmail?

Well they seemed to be making fun of th3j35t3r (another hacktivist) when they did that.

I actually found it funny when they faked the resurrection of Tupac in New Zealand.

So, are we going to get an official statement from GStaff or Henning? Silence svcks. Even if they didn't do much of anything, official statements are always good ideas

blackmailing passwords is silly. Passwords can be changed.

And in other news: forum flood control is still in full force :brokencomputer:

I have to admit, http://www.h-online.com/security/news/item/US-broadcaster-hacked-in-revenge-for-WikiLeaks-report-1252820.html. But I'd be fine with what they did if they didn't post the stolen data around, for anybody to pick up. The data regarding everyday, normal people who haven't done anything wrong and don't deserve to have their safety compromised.

For the most part they've only posted a portion of what they've been able to access, and in some cases nothing at all. Still could be better, but nothing you can do since they are just in it for the "lulz".
