The Main Quest of Skyrim is fantastic!

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 8:46 am

It wasn't the greatest story I've ever been part of. Other games have that honor, for me, anyway. But it was a good story, and it made me feel like quite the badass.

And ...

Spoiler
Alduin being a relatively easy battle wasn't a surprise to me. As the Dragonborn, you're meant to be the foe of dragons. You're meant to destroy Alduin. The battle being overly difficult wouldn't have made sense to me. And as someone who plays the Elder Scrolls more for the lore and the exploration than the combat, the battle being easy wasn't a bother.

(This thread should be in spoilers.)

Spoiler

Yes, however many things in the game can kill us. Destiny is not always a foregone conclusion. The way I see it, Alduin was the opposite end of the spectrum, he should have by all rights, been the equal of our character or greater for being our antithesis. He should have been so powerful, that only our character, at the height of their power could even stand a chance...like two forces of nature pushing against each other and never relenting. Never mind the fact that the player as it is now, can kill him without doing anything but using dragonrend on him, by having the three NPCs just kill him themselves.

Well said.

Though I guess my perspective is from the feeling that Skyrim almost makes the MQ feel effortless. That the real test is in unifying or dividing Skyrim in the quests afterwards.

Really feels like the MQ is all about the awe factor, and that the 'guts' of the game rest in less un-divined factors. Probably the reason why I always finish the MQ first.

I thought the main quest was pretty good. Yes the last fight was easy, but generally aren't they all suppose to be once you gain godly mode.

I did like that it took you to level 30, that was a huge complaint I had with Oblivion. The main quest seemed very short to me.

Its just people being negative nancies. They want to nit pick the little [censored].
Like Above said, if you hit Sovengrade and don't get some sort of Chill up your spine...you're dead to games. I enjoyed it thoroughly, specially seeing some of these guys in Sovengarde, and I killed their Lich counter part...I wanted to say "You know I killed you..." That would have been even more satisfying.

I don't know..I loved the Fight..I loved the Temple Fight UP TO Getting into Sovengarde, that was my boss for for me...

Multiple Dragons, Multiple Draugrs, and even a Dragon Priest Guarding the Gate versus me...in my Heavy Armor, and Two Handed Sword and some Shouts. Switching from First Person to Third Person, Running up them steps with my great sword in hand...I was feeling the rush.
--------
For me, the Blades Killed the story, if they would have just left them as My Guardsman, that would be fine, but no, they had to "Step Above the Dragonborn's Authority" and tell me what I "Need to do". If You disregard the blades the main story is awesome. Loved the Ending, Love Patthornaax and Odavhin (Spell Check).

I totally agree concerning the Blades. Who do they think they are? They're supposed to SERVE and protect the Dragonborn, not order the Dragonborn around! Guess that pitiful remnant of the Blades isn't worth saving, let them rattle around in their old ruin mourning their failures, because I'm not killing that old dragon. He proved what side he was on generations before by teaching the Voice to men and helping them defeat Alduin the first time, that's more than good enough for me.

While the final battle itself wasn't that difficult, the atmosphere was truly epic. Fighting alongside ancient Nord heroes to vanquish the world eater in Sovngarde with a glorious score playing in the background? Yes please

lol Nobody Reacts? I've had guards who literally, watched me kill a Courier, and tell me, "Nothing you do now, can ever destroy what you did for us...you saved us from Complete Destruction".

I think the main quest might be glitching for a lot of people. I've had random NPC's praise me for saving the Land from the coming destruction.

REALLY?! Yes! Nazeem must die! Come to think of it, the truly totally dislikable "Patron of the Great Clan Battle-born" and that crabby old lady, too. Guess not the smart-mouthed little girl, but maybe a well-placed swat on the butt...?

You're right. I didn't intend it as a spoiler and was careful to make my comments very general, but replies have become too specific. This should be moved to the Spoilers section.

Sure, interesting the first playthrough, but I can't imagine doing it again, it's like an okay movie, you watch it, got some entertainment out of it but you ain't gonna watch again as it's 2 hours of material you already know whats going to happen.

So yeah I wouldn't say it's bad, it's not epic though, it was okay. It was nice. But nothing spectacular for me.
But playing the main quest again? Nope. I already know the plot twists. It's like watching the film Identity again. Sure I'll watch it in like 2 years when I've forgotten a lot of the films events but I will always remember the plot twist.
So Identity? [censored] great film. And I want to recapture that feeling I once got from watching it, but I can't.

That's Skyrim.
What little plot twists it had have been seen and can never be unseen and since the main quest is terribly linear apart from like... 2 occasions? There isn't gonna be any reason to play through it again.

[edit]

It's like this, go to your dvd-collection, now look for a film that was "okay" to watch. Watch it. Then ask yourself the next day "Do I want to watch this film again?"
[/edit]

So it's not bad, but it's not fantastic either, far from it. Regular cliché'd "save the world" with a sprinkle of "ancient cult/society/group", "Ancient artifact of enourmous magical proportions" and the ol' "Oh that regular person? Yeah he/she/it is actually someone reaaaally important who's undercover."

I disagree with the OP for many reasons.

1. Build-up:
I never felt like I really beat this terrible force because Skyrim never makes Alduin seem very powerful throughout the story-line. The only major encounters were the battle at Helgen, Alduin battle #1, and Alduin battle #2. Helgen mostly showed a bunch of burning buildings and a lot of people looking up. While this may make players scared of him then, they are never reminded of this fear any other time. In fact, players don't even know it's Alduin until much later, long after they forgot about the battle. The only reason the player has reason to believe Alduin is any sort of threat is the fact that people say so. Just saying "He's super evil and stuff" didn't cut it for me so in the end I didn't get the accomplishment I got in other games.

2. Knowing thine enemy
Alduin is just cardboard, not just because he's pretty weak but because he was just another cut-out "destroy the world" villain that has nothing else behind him. At no time does Skyrim explore Alduin's motivations or character. All you know of him is the "Alduin is evil because he is" crap you get from everyone you meet. This big evil destroyer guy archetype is used in other In another RPGs like Mass Effect but there is one main difference between the two enemies. Mass Effect uses it's main enemy's secret motivations as a plot hook rather than just not using them at all. The being considered, Alduin could have been an interesting character that you love to hate but in his current state he's just a piece of cardboard you need to stab repeatedly.

3. The epic battle... or not
Skyrim is hardly cinematic and that's fine with me but there is no reason the final battle with the antagonist has to be so static. The Alduin fight is just your average Skyrim boss fight with nothing that spices it up. Is it too hard to ask to make Alduin break some stuff? He's just another dragon that has a tad more health and one unique shout. This battle could have been much greater had it been done in stages like every game's boss fights. Have him spawn waves of spirits or drop boulders on you, anything that makes his fight more than using dragon rend, hit Alduin with sharp stuff, and reapeat.

Except for the fact that :

Spoiler

Alduin is immune to all damage while flying, he can resuscitate 'dead' dragons, and he retreats to Sovngarde when weak. Were it not for Dragonrend, the player has no hope of ever defeating Alduin before he reaches Sovngarde. Once he gets to Sovngarde, he is weakened and the fight plays out as such.

That being said, yes... the difficulty could use a once-over.

Hm.I liked it more then oblivion, but morrowind had the best main quest.
But i tend to see the positive things of the game instead of the bad things. Again,I think what bethesda does best is creating worlds.

Ehh glad you enjoyed it I suppose, Looking up at Sovengard Floored me. I don't think you can find a game that does epic like that. but aside from that no, I actually wish the game went in more with the whole Dragon cult and history of the Dragons etc etc, I mean you read a freaking Elderscroll in the most badass way possible WHY do you give me a taste and not the whole jug?

What I was trying to get at is that Alduin is never shown to be this super evil DeathStar thing. People only tell you he is. If no one had said that Alduin wasn't beatable unless you had dragon rend I would have believed he was just any other dragon. Even when people told me this, I just thought "Oh, the battle's going to be even easier now".

Oh, I agree with this so much...

I'm holding out for expansions/DLC before I render a finalized verdict on the whole Dragon Cult thing. Even though there is...

Spoiler

...somewhat of a quest...

...in that regard.

You know, you are sort of ruining my whole spoiler tag thing I have going on here. :P

But, yes, I generally agree that the narrative involved could use a little more depth.

called dragon rend that did something to Alduin to beat him. Most people will come in knowing there has to be some plot device that enables you to beat the game.

Too bad Bethesda didn't make Alduin OP and Epic, he is a god afterall. Give him 10,000 Health, have him do double damage and negate half of the damage dealt to him(the accumulates with Master) have him know every single Dragon Shout in the game, etc. Is there a mod for that?
