The Main Quest of Skyrim is fantastic!

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 11:18 am

For all the griping I've done about other parts of gameplay for Skyrim, I want to say the Main Quest to defeat Alduin is perhaps one of the most gloriously entertaining and satisfying I've ever done in any game! When you're through with it, you really feels as if you've accomplished something great... and the exultation and honor of the dragons afterwards makes for a perfect ending.

This was the second time I've finished the Alduin quest, and I'd forgotten how great the whole thing was, since it tended to get lost in the gameplay that followed it. The failure of the game to update globally to acknowledge the Dragonborn's achievement muted the satisfaction gained from what is probably one of the best (if not THE best) questlines ever in an RPG, and that's almost criminal.

Come on, guys, the Dragonborn went where no other mortals can go, getting there in a way no other mortals ever have, and then did what no other mortal could do and, by doing so, saved the entire world and every person in it. Doesn't that at least deserve the town guards no longer threatening or insulting the Dragonborn?

It's deffinitely better then Oblivion, but Alduin could have been more challanging... Even on Master he was a kitten. I can safefully say i have fought mudcrabs more fiercer then him.

That and everyone acts as if nothing has happened...

I'm happy for you that you feel that way. It was quite the opposite for me unfortunately - probably because the final battle was extremely and surprisingly easy compared to more common creatures in Skyrim (master difficulty).

Nobody knew Alduin had returned, and they can't exactly see you when you kill him -.-"

I don't want to sound like a "Skyrim is the bestest thing ever" guy(because I'm not), but I find the fact that so little happen a bit belivable. The civil war is raging/just ended and people have families and lives to take care of. Very few know the truth of what happened.

I justify the lack of accolades from the general populace by telling myself that Balgruuf, Farengar, the Greybeards, the Blades and myself were pretty much the only ones in all of Skyrim aware of what was going on. Average Joe the Nord Farmer probably had no idea dragons meant the end of the world was upon us, nor that there was even a Dragonborn walking the land again.

Everyone has their reasons for playing RPGs, personally, I play for the craft of the story... it IS a "Role Playing Game", after all, and I enjoy the role play, which translates into STORYLINE. Hack-n-slash can be fun at times, but if I want just that, I'll play Titan Quest.

Hey! I can run with that! But the town guards in Dawnstar do know most of the whole story, so at least they should show some respect for the Dragonborn.

I didn't particularly like it. It wasn't good, but it wasn't bad.

I think most people will agree that the final battle was way too easy, and strangely lacking in pretty much anything (apart form the epic setting) on any difficulty, but most of everything leading up to it was simply stellar.

You crystalize the difference between play styles, you and many like you play for the difficulty of the battle, I and those like me play for the weaving of the over-all story, as well entertaining puzzles and sudden surprises. No doubt it's extremely hard for RPG designers to excel at both.

I add a bit of difficulty by taking Lydia with me everywhere now. Keeping HER alive at the same time you're trying to keep yourself alive and kill whatever is a full-time job that takes constant vigilance. I actually work up my Smithing and Enchanting just to keep Lydia in the best, most perked armor and weapons possible.

No it really really wasn't. Nobody reacts to the fact you saved the entire world's asses... Alduin, the supposed 'ultimate' dragon who is the 'world-devourer' is a piece of cake...

I admit... I enjoyed it. It's just not fantastic. It's not rewarding, and it's not epic.

The infiltration mission was pretty cool.

Put it this way, there should have been more of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8VklnlfODs.

Its just people being negative nancies. They want to nit pick the little [censored].
Like Above said, if you hit Sovengrade and don't get some sort of Chill up your spine...you're dead to games. I enjoyed it thoroughly, specially seeing some of these guys in Sovengarde, and I killed their Lich counter part...I wanted to say "You know I killed you..." That would have been even more satisfying.

I don't know..I loved the Fight..I loved the Temple Fight UP TO Getting into Sovengarde, that was my boss for for me...

Multiple Dragons, Multiple Draugrs, and even a Dragon Priest Guarding the Gate versus me...in my Heavy Armor, and Two Handed Sword and some Shouts. Switching from First Person to Third Person, Running up them steps with my great sword in hand...I was feeling the rush.
--------
For me, the Blades Killed the story, if they would have just left them as My Guardsman, that would be fine, but no, they had to "Step Above the Dragonborn's Authority" and tell me what I "Need to do". If You disregard the blades the main story is awesome. Loved the Ending, Love Patthornaax and Odavhin (Spell Check).

lol Nobody Reacts? I've had guards who literally, watched me kill a Courier, and tell me, "Nothing you do now, can ever destroy what you did for us...you saved us from Complete Destruction".

I think the main quest might be glitching for a lot of people. I've had random NPC's praise me for saving the Land from the coming destruction.

I think the main quest is by far the most interesting part of Skyrim. The other questlines don't come close. Though maybe an expansion questline will surpass it.

The main quest felt rushed and phoned in to me. It felt like there needed to be twice as much story/content after Blackreach. Also, as was already said....Alduin was a weakling. I also never really felt threatened by the dragons, and felt nothing towards Alduin, on account of him never actually doing anything to personally wrong me, and he had almost no personality and motives that were hardly explained. We never even get to properly banter with him, not even at the very end.

It was a nice build-up, but the ending was a major let-down.

Spoiler
Alduin goes poof, some guy in Sovngarde praises your greatness, Paarthurnax flies off if you let him live, and your ultimate reward is some random guard comments.

Not to mention how anticlimactically easy it is to defeat Alduin for the final time.

This should really be moved to the Spoilers section.

Spoiler

There is something to be said for difficulty, but isn't the Dragonborn supposed to defeat Alduin? Especially considering his weakened state in Sovngarde. To be fair though, once you get Dragonrend... no Dragon stands a chance.

Yes, however many things in the game can kill us. Destiny is not always a foregone conclusion. The way I see it, Alduin was the opposite end of the spectrum, he should have by all rights, been the equal of our character or greater for being our antithesis. He should have been so powerful, that only our character, at the height of their power could even stand a chance...like two forces of nature pushing against each other and never relenting. Never mind the fact that the player as it is now, can kill him without doing anything but using dragonrend on him, by having the three NPCs just kill him themselves.
