The Nine became The Eight

You think Bethesda was influenced by planets of Solar System? :) We had 9 planets orbiting around sun, then they demoted Pluto by saying it isn't a planet, now we have 8 of them.

Not really. Each Aedra is also a planet, except for Talos, Talos was never a planet to begin with. So if they wanted the nine to resemble the amount of planets we have in our solar system they probably would have made Talos a planet to begin with.

Arkay wasn't a planet either.

No, No I don't seeing as Talos hasn't been demoted. He is still an Aedra despite the Thalmors claims.

Aaaanyway, back on topic. Bethesda derived the idea of the Nine Divines from Norse religion actually - The Nine Noble Virtues.. Then they became the 8 because of Skyrim, and the Thalmor having a whinge and so on and so forth...

I think the point is since when is Talos no longer part of the 9?

White-gold concordat for most in the Empire, or if you believe the Thalmor he never was, or if you believe facts then he still is...

I still don't get the point though

I didn't know I needed a leading german astrophysicist approval to call B.S. on someone else's claim. Would you kindly provide his contact info so I could ask him if I can do stuff in the future?

Not necessarily so in TES, after all if enough people stop believing in Talos then eventually he will not be a member of the 9, or rather he simply won't be.

The Aedra are original spirits who participated in Creation.
They sacrificed (parts of) themselves into the project and are bound by it.
Their spheres orbit Nirn and are infinite in size. They are perceived as finite spheres by mortals because our mind cannot comprehend the visual concept of nestling infinities.

Talos is the enantiomer, the mirror-brother, of Lorkhan.
His ascenscion was caused by several Shezarines or avatars of Lorkhan re-enacting the story of creation with the lives they led.
As above so below, and conversely, as below so above.

The reason Lorkhan/Talos does not have a plane(t) is that after creation the other original spirits punished him for their fall from grace and tore asunder his body. It can be seen in the night sky as the moons.

And then Bethesda makes a second warp in the west and retcons everything.

Lately they've not even had excuses for retcons...

There have been several explanations in game for the whole Akatosh/Alduin thing, which is pretty much the biggest controversy presented in Skyrim.

Yeah... I just don't like the fact that all the interesting lore gets turfed because its inconvenient. It's the only thing that makes me wonder whether or not I'll continue with the series. Because without the lore - TES isn't much chop.

just because hes not said as one of the 9 because of what the high elves claim doesn't mean he isn't a divine. his shrines still grant boons. the only reason that the high elves say hes not a divine anyway is because they cant stand that a human transcended first they wouldn't have said anything if Talos was a High elf i assure you.

on topic: i don't think this is the complete case while it may have had an influence (a small one) i don't think it was completely what they did Pluto was decided not a planet before oblivion came out so if this were the case then they wouldn't have Talos as a divine in oblivion.

I disagree. Even if they completely change the lore, it's the only game I've found where I can be a demon/bandit/monster-killing naked catgirl.

Pluto being demoted might have given the script writers their original idea for the storyline of Skyrim... you never know!

No, no approval needed. Just some improved reading comprehension skills.

A ton of TES lore comes from or is inspired by the real world - science, mythology, etc. Attempting to make a connection to the real world to explain some facet of Skyrim is hardly far-fetched, nor is it an example of what you posted.

Don't get me wrong; it was a solid effort. I give it a B+.

At any rate, I happen to disagree that Beth got direct inspiration from Pluto's downgrade. Plus, if Talos were a planet, would he be Pluto? I'd think Mars... but that sort of points out how a *direct* correspondence doesn't always work.

Pluto was demoted because the Rosicrucians want to roll back time.
