The Pronounciation of "Elsweyr"

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 9:02 pm

I always thought that it was prounced [Else-wire].

I thought so too, and still say Else-wire from time to time. Probably because of my boyfriend who owns the german version of skyrim. In german Elsweyr is indeed pronounced else-wire instead of else-where. 'Where' seems like a very strange way to pronounce 'weyr' imo, but that's english for you - ghoti = fish. The pronoucniation is never what one might expect. =)

I thought it was Else-weer

"Elsewhere" just sounds stupid to me. I do not want it to be the setting for the next game because of that alone.
The name comes from a joke and saying of a ruler of then-not named Elsweyr. "If you want better, go elsewhere." is pretty much how it went. It fits the way Khajiit are, in fact. They seem like a "what you see is what you get" kind of people. They don't care if you look down on their moon sugar. The natives will slurp it up even if an Imperial is nearby.

The voiced lines for Khajiit in Morrowind include, "Mmmm. Good friend." "Share some sugar?" "Why is my friend here?"(my favorite just because it's so cute) and "Sweet sweet moon sugar."

So, before Skyrim, was I the only one who thought that "Elsweyr" was prounced differently? I always thought that it was prounced [Else-wire]. I was acutally kind of surprised when I heard one of the Khajiit caravaners prounce it as [Else-where] and laughed to my self how funny that name was to me. "Where are you from?" "Else where".
The y really makes it sound like wire so really it should be else wire. Thats how ive pronounced it and always will. Dam khajiit's and their english.

They did learn English by observing people speaking it.

The first time I saw it written down I thought: "Elsewhere! That's a pretty good joke." And I've never looked back...

I agree...it does sound stupid. I had to think for a minute when I heard it pronounced in the game.

Well, Imperials do sound pretty American, so yes. They did learn from Americans to an extent. Only, from Imperials. They learn things through observation, which is how they learned just about everything that wasn't already known to their culture. They are masters of mercantile and have a huge part of that from their own culture. They probably could invent a Wal-Mart faster than an Imperial, in fact. If the caravans were allowed in cities and people noticed how good the selection of stuff was, they could have ended up getting a trade deal with Skyrim.

I love me some Khajiit lore.

I know the people of Tamriel don't speak English. It's just what we hear. Khajiit did learn the more dominant language through observing, still. It is Tamrielic, I believe.

This is a great blog series on Khajiit if you want some Khajiit lore. I like the lore on the beast races, Dunmer, and Bosmer more. The others are cool, but I'd rather read about how a Bosmer got drunk and invented some strange device(or decided to invent the Elevator Suikoden style... That guy in Suikoden... Bless him! He invented the elevator yet he probably was never cared about after the first Suikoden game!).

The word "else where" has lost all meaning to me.
If someone says to me something like "you'll have to look else where" the only word that pops into my mind is Elsweyr.
I prioritise TES things over real life okay.

Am I the only one in this room who new how to pronounce it correctly from the start?

Seems like you're also the only person in the room that doesn't know the difference between "new" and "knew".

I always thought is was pronounced like elsewhere, I dunno, call me crazy. Looks more like elsewhere to me than else-wire, but I can see where you're coming from.
Same here.

I just love the idea of it. It kinda seems natural that the Kats would be from there and it would be called that.

It just gets on my nerves when people make fun of others, and then do something equally stupid (even though mispronouncing "Elsweyr" does not deserve a facepalm) in the insult.

I thought that it was supposed to be read like "Elsewhere" coz it seemed to me like a funny word-game.
On the other hand I thought that Skyrim was pronounced more like Skeerim, it seemed more harsh, nordic to me;P

I always thought it was pronounced "else-weer". Anyway seems like the correct pronunciation should be "else-where", from the quite reliable sources quoted by some posts.

I agree o_O Since Elsweyr has a Y what sense does it make pronoucing it like "where". It's Else-weer to me, but the khajits know where they are from
