The Pronounciation of "Elsweyr"

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 7:29 pm

So, before Skyrim, was I the only one who thought that "Elsweyr" was prounced differently? I always thought that it was prounced [Else-wire]. I was acutally kind of surprised when I heard one of the Khajiit caravaners prounce it as [Else-where] and laughed to my self how funny that name was to me. "Where are you from?" "Else where".

I always thought is was pronounced like elsewhere, I dunno, call me crazy. Looks more like elsewhere to me than else-wire, but I can see where you're coming from.

I thought it was Else-weer

"Elsewhere" just sounds stupid to me. I do not want it to be the setting for the next game because of that alone.

It fits with the way the khergit are and especially how they speak in my opinion.

I think an Elder Scrolls game set in the land of the cats would be a difficult sell to the masses. I don't see Bethesda making a game in Elsweyr anytime soon.

Ha. Me too. What part?

Yeah, it's always been pronounced that way. In morrowind there was a Khajiit that when you asked about his background said he was from elsewhere. I thought it was hilarious.

"Historically, Elsweyr was split into a number of smaller states (speculation suggests as many as sixteen states) until the time of the Great Plague that devastated the whole of Tamriel. Only the kingdoms of http://uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Anequina and http://uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Pellitine are known to have survived this catastrophe intact and they decided at that time to forge an Alliance of Peace, thereby creating a unified confederacy. During the formation of this new nation it is possible that an old Khajiiti proverb was recalled, which ran along the lines of "perfect society is always elsewhere", thus resulting in the union's name."

Khajiit: Ewwuu Ewman are incapabal of hearing the high frequencies of Khajiit speech. So ewwuu hear it as "Else-Where". Khajiit oso think "Skyrim" sound silly.

I'm pretty sure dialogues in MW weren't voiced, just the introductory lines.

It's spelled "Elsweyr" but it's pronounced "Out of State."
;-)

Side comment: has that province ever been reproduced in an ES game? If not, I suspect it would be more than just a little bit interesting.

I love the name, my only gripe if they make a game out of it is how Bethesda would go about all the other types of Khajiit.

On the history of the name, which should also tell you something about how it's pronounced

When the two united in 309th year of the 2nd Era with the marriage of Kiergo of Anequina and E[censored]a of Pellitine, the two rulers fully recognized how historic their pact was, and renamed their land accordingly, to Elsweyr. The derivation of this unusual name has perplexed scholars. One commonly held rationale hinges on a particular Khajiit proverb that "a perfect society is always found elsewhere," suggesting that the new King and Queen had that aim, and that sense of humor.

Some were.. somewhat fully voiced.
More than the introductory, anyway.

Either my memory is faulty or I remember some voices. I could be thinking of Oblivion because this was about 8 years ago I played Morrowind. :P

Lot's of NPC's had voices. If only to call you scum as you walked by. This would include some random Khajiit.

I always thought it was El - es - where. It only confirmed my thought on that when hadvar during the tutorial says it when he will return your remains to el - es - where
