The Vault's preview of New Vegas : part 2

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 9:29 am

So, a search told me no one opened a topic about this so.. here's a http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:Ausir/My_Fallout:_New_Vegas_preview_-_part_2 to Ausir's impressions about New Vegas' GamesCom demo.

Here's an interesting snippet:

"Josh explained that me seeing Damage Threshold only on the leather armor, but Damage Resistance on the Vault 21 jumpsuit was a bug – DR is actually gone entirely from the game in its current build and DT is the only damage-reducing armor stat now. However, at least on the PC, those who want for the armor to be more like in Fallout 3, with DR only, or like Fallout 1 and 2, with both DR and DT, will be able to adjust it accordingly in the GECK, as both stats are supported by the editor. I also noticed that in the inventory the Damage field for weapons now alternates between damage per shot and damage per second. By the way, damage is now a range, like in Fallout 1 and 2, instead of a set number like in Fallout 3. "

Also, http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:Ausir/My_Fallout:_New_Vegas_preview_-_part_1 to the first part. (Warning : those are a bit more spoiler-y) (second warning : yeah, I do know they've probably been already posted, but I think it's helpful to put both links in the same thread)

I hope I haven't overlooked someone else posting this.

Is this good or bad? It sounds bad, as surely having both would be best?
Or is DT good enough to stand alone?

Nice. Damage and armour as they should be. Also, giant rats. Nice for all the British players here to get some training.

I'm reserving my judgment for when I try the system.
Only thing I can tell, is that J.E. Sawyer already wanted to do that for Van Buren IIRC.

Not many spoilers, but a nice little write-up from someone who isn't just a generic game journalist.

Wait, so what exactly is the difference between DR and DT?

Its nothing important, but I asked Ausir what the location of the world map was like, and he says New vegas is slightly north of the maps central point, so NV is kinda the center of NV literally

Well, I'm not so sure about DR, but I can explain DT. With DT, higher armors (like power armor) will be very hard to pierce with most weapons. This is because if you have a DT of 30, and get hit by a weapon dealing 29 damage, you will not take any damage. On the other hand, if you get hit by a weapon with a damage of 50, you will take 20 damage. Does that make any sense?

Damage Reduction is a percentile reduction. Damage Threshold cuts a certain value from the damage received.

..I'm not sure if that's clear, but I'm a bit tired, sorry.

Damage Threshold (DT) is the minimum amount of damage that has to be surpassed to cause harm.
Damage Resistance (DR) is a percentual amount that take from the caused damage.

Edit - Ah, beaten byt Worst... :P

The best part is that they still kept DR in case someone wants to mod it in.

I like the "By the way, damage is now a range, like in Fallout 1 and 2, instead of a set number like in Fallout 3." part.

Makes me wonder how the weaponskills work, though. Does it just narrow the gap between min and max dmg towards the max dmg, or what?

May one of the Fallout 1/2 players tell me what this means?

Huntingrifle damage: 11-20 instead of Huntingrifle damage: 18, for example. At least that's how I understand it and how it was in the originals (I may be confusing it to something else, though, since the videos so far have only given one number for damage).

Seems straightforward, really. Instead of 5 damage, you have 3-7.

My guess is weapon skill increases the min damage of the range, which actually makes sense (more accurate at hitting where it hurts).

no your correct, there are ranges maximum range the weapon can reach and its dmg, and the minimum range and its damage so the lowest my machete can do for example on its own is 11 and the highest is 25 so 11-25

That all sound good to me. Although I think it would've made much more sense to have both DR and DT though ...

DR being for the things that aren't actually armor.

I hope the Guns skill affects the damage range rather than accuracy, I want to live in a world without spread! (Recoil is fine though.)

I can't wait to see how the DT system fares

Also that was pretty well written for a generic fan
