The word "Magicka"...

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 11:31 am

Not, because Magic is the term you use for what you do with magicka... it would be like renaming Stamina into "Running" and health into "Staying alive" or something...
No one is contradicting or dismissing this logic, just observing that the word "Magicka" itself is silly to some.

Like I said in a comment above, FF XII used the word "Mist"... Magicka cannot possibly sound silly compaired to that...

OK, so why is there "magicka" but no "healtha" or "healtheth"?
Or "staminus"?

I think I'm going to name my next warrior 'Staminus'

'My name is Staminus Decimus Meridius, Dragonborn Commander of the armies of the Blades and Stormcloaks. Loyal to the true High King of Skyrim Ulfric Stormcloak. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered Wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next'

Too bad there's no Arena quests in Skyrim so I could run around the battlefield after each win yelling ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED

It's a matter of taste. To me magicka is silly because it's "magic" with old-timey spelling and an "a" put on the end. In the FF games they come up with a whole bunch of words for magic ideas and phenomena, often drawing from historical lore.

To me both "magicka" and "mist" are silly, but it's the idea of finding a word to describe something we know and understand from mythology, religion and fiction, and using that to describe the thing in the game that's interesting. We understand what health, stamina and magic are, but we choose to alter the word for magic. This is true in a lot of games.

Mana...Magicka...Gravity...Social Security...

These are all just made up words for fantasy games. One isn't better than the other because they are all based in fantasy anyway.

In the US fantasy game Social Security is being destroyed by evil Thalmor like groups. Most of the rest of us are not so much under their thumb. We'll see how that develops. ;)

i think calling it Mana is silly.

mana is a word to my people in our native language, and i like Magicka... why try to be the same as EVERY OTHER RPG THATS EVER BEEN MADE.

but thats just my opinion
Quoted for the [censored] truth.

Why the [censored] would they want to be like every other RPG?

Mana is also a terrible word it sounds childlike. And if you were practising magic, why would you use Mana, Magicka makes more sense, because magic is in the word.

"Magicka"...its kind of a silly word, i never use it when referring to my magic source, i always just call it "mana" like EVERY OTHER RPG THATS EVER BEEN MADE. Maybe they wanted to be original? I just think its silly. What are your thoughts?

Not every SINGLE one. I remember when it started. Was a Nintendo game called "The Secret of Mana". Before that, it was just called "magic". And just like today, the meter indicating it was always blue. Don't know why that is.

Because lore says so.

OP is to report to the lore forums to be torn apart by lore sharks.

i call it mana.
mana is what you need to cast magic
magicka = magic, when you level up magicka you can hold more mana to cast more spells.

I say stick with Magicka. I personally think it sounds more arcane than mana. Besides Magicka is a lot closer to magic than mana is. Besides, just because most other games use mana doesn't mean Bethesda should. I mean most other games are linear and boring. Would you want that instead? to go with your mana.

Why is Saruman talking about social security?

That is troubling.

Magicka always sounded perfectly natural to me. Much better than mana.

"Mana" sounds extremely silly to me. Probably because I don’t play other RPGs. When I see someone use the term "mana" instead of magicka, it tends to make me skip over the rest of what the person has written. I suppose it’s a matter of personal taste.

"Magicka" is indeed a rather silly pseudo-archaism. I could deal with them using an actual archaic term, but "magicka" just sounds like somebody's trying too hard...like some guy at a Rennaissance Fair who's trying too hard. Pseudo-archaisms always bug me in general. "Shoppe" is absurd. "Ye olde Shoppe" makes me wanna club baby seals to death. "Magicka" is about on the same level. I can't imagine discussing Skyrim with another person and actually forcing myself to use the term "magicka" instead of just saying "magic power".

So remember, if TES VI comes out and a city has a store named Ye Olde Magicka Shoppe I'm likely to have some strong words for somebody at Bethesda. :stare:

Whatever it is, I'm probably just going to end up calling it "MP" anyway.

I dunno about shoppes, but in the first game they did have the rather memorable "Kindley waiteth: Ye olde diske needs to be accessed" for the loading message.

Not sure, but you're right. I guess the natural color for health is red. What was the pattern in Fable I? Or Morrowind, and earlier TES games?

Makes sense to me, it's drawn from the old for of Magic. Most words that now end with -ic used to end with -ick.

I certainly don't call it mana, why would I do that?. Can't see what other rpg's call it has to do with Skyrim. I don't call it magicka either as that sounds idiotic and just makes me think of Majik from X-Men (I'm not googling to find out how that's spelt) so I just call it Magic as that's what it is.

You don't get characters running around the game world talking about this strange substance called magicka do you, nope it's called magic by all the characters in Skyrim and it's called magic in all the in game books which is good enough for me.
