The word "Magicka"...

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 4:37 am

"Magicka"...its kind of a silly word, i never use it when referring to my magic source, i always just call it "mana" like EVERY OTHER RPG THATS EVER BEEN MADE. Maybe they wanted to be original? I just think its silly. What are your thoughts?

There's a game called Magicka...

But I think Magicka has been around longer. Was it called that in Arena?

What I like is TES is not totally like EVERY OTHER RPG THAT HAS BEEN MADE :tes:

And the Original meaning of Mana, or what it refered to in times before now, have nothing to do with shooting lightning bolts from your face ;p

Mana...Magicka...Gravity...Social Security...

These are all just made up words for fantasy games. One isn't better than the other because they are all based in fantasy anyway.

Funnily enough I don't like the term "mana," although I wish "magicka" didn't have the K.

Evey RPG has some name about the magic energy that mages use... Most call it mana, some call it simply magic/MP, FF XII even called it "Mist"... Skyrim calls it Magicka, I fail to see any problem with it...

Also, why do so many ppl not like the word "mana" ? It's probably the perfect word for an essence/energy that flows into the world and can be harnessed... Yeah, it means various things in various languages... it means "Mother" in mine, lol, so what?

Hm, I never understood why they all have to start with an M.

But, so far through each TES game I have played, I have renamed it to "Toast & Jelly". Mainly because it has power.

To me:

Mana refers to only the pool of magic you draw your energies from, rather than the actual casting, or type of "magicka" you are casting.

Magicka refers to the actual practice of arts. Mana is not ever referred to as the practice of the arts... mana is always referred to as:

"How much mana do you have left, bro?"

Magicka: "How goes the practice in the magic arts?" (or magicka).

Magick is the archaic form of the word Magic.......but simple magic today is not what it was years ago.

So, when I am playing my rpgs, I prefer to call it magicka, since it is less "modern"......

If you are referring to mana in skyrim, all that it refers to is the pretty blue bar at the bottom of your screen, and how full it is half the time.

OK, so why is there "magicka" but no "healtha" or "healtheth"?
Or "staminus"?

Lol exact opposite for me. TES was my first RPG that I really got into so I call everything, even in the other games I play magicka. :)

Because there isn't any archaic form for health. Unless you would like to adopt it just now....maybe we can refer to it from here on out as Healtha.

Which means that you, Llamaskull, will go down in history as creating an archaic form of a modern term.

Gratz.

A- Because of all those words, only magicka sounds cool.
B- Because of these 3 stats, only magicka does not have a common everyday word which it makes sense to refer to it.

"Magicka" is a made- up word. It is not an archaic form of a modern word.

Magic is a common everyday word which makes sense to refer to it by.

I think it's all about coolness and there's no defensible, factual logic behind it. I'm just going with the OP in saying that it's a little silly. Not a big deal, really.

Since we call the physical state of characters in games 'health', can't we just rename magicka to 'mental well-being'?

If they invented the term 'Magicka' today I would definitely think they were just trying to be different for the sake of it. However, i'm not sure that 'mana' had even been established as the SI unit of magical energy back in the early days of the Elder Scrolls series.

Not, because Magic is the term you use for what you do with magicka... it would be like renaming Stamina into "Running" and health into "Staying alive" or something...

No, I was being sarcastic to make a point, which I elaborated upon in a subsequent post.
"Healtha" sounds really dumb, doesn't it? Well, if it sounds dumb, why is "Magicka" acceptable?
For me it's a trifle, but I do think it sounds dumb.
