Errr... did you play Dead Money? Magic teleportation? You were gassed, knocked unconscious, and your gear was stripped while you were helpless as a baby. Then you were dragged to where you woke up. The DLC very clearly explains this. How did you miss it?
Errr... Yeah, played it 3 times so far. I love it. Here's a quote, from Elijah at the fountain, after the Courier asks, 'Where's my gear?'
"The Sierra Madre has many... defenses, means of screening guests for illicit or dangerous items. Your arrival here, weaponless, was not my intention.
The casino, this villa... it takes anything with even a trace of radioactivity, traces of unknown substances... and returns it home. The bunker.
The process is automated, and the casino itself has other, similar 'services'.So, the chain of events seems to be this:
1) At the BoS bunker, miles away and connected in no way to the Sierra Madre, your character is gassed.
2) Dog finds you and carries you through the wasteland to the Sierra Madre.
3) At the perimeter of the Sierra Madre you are screened and your equipment (but not Dog's?) is returned to the trunk at the entrance to the BoS bunker. How the security system knows where you came from is not explained.
I would have preferred it the way you describe; Elijah could have rationalized that if you are using only the equipment he provided you are less likely to surprise him.
Why would a
pre-war magic security system screen for radioactivity, anyway?
