Is there anyone that DOES like having their gear taken away?

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 5:38 am

I've noticed that this issue is brought up on a lot of different message boards. Hell, this complaint is one of the top rated comments currently for the Honest Hearts trailer on youtube.

It's kind of like planet scanning in Mass Effect 2.

sure its fine, i wouldnt like it to be cliche and happen in every DLC but in a couple sure, it forces the player to work with what their given and adds a little challenge to higher level characters

I have no problem. Adapt and overcome. It always reminds me of those first hours playing the game, crappy gear, no idea what you're doind,etc... Best part of every game.

Edit: PS. I didn't mind planet scanning, either. I could put my feet up on the desk and drink a beer with the free hand. It was a nice break.

I like the new challenge.
What I hate is the contrived ways it is done. Dead Money was the worst offender. There had to be some other way besides magic teleportation.

I don't mind it. It makes me try things I might not otherwise. I never would have used the BAR or the police pistol if I had had the option of my other equipment.

It also gives you more room for loot.

And planet scanning didn't bother me at first, but once the upgrades started getting expensive it started to.

If it is intended to encourage the player to experiment with the new equipment and the items available in the DLC itself, then I have no problems with it at all. Dead Money was a lot of fun.

It's a nice change of pace going from having every piece of equipment I could ever want and enough ammo do massacre the mojave several times over to sneaking around with the one gun I've got hoping my last mag is enough to take out the next thing I see because it's that or a pitiful attempt at melee. Of course there are going to be those that disagree but its done for balance and as long as the reason is plausible it works for me I'd rather this than magic guns that take another 40 hp off like in point lookout.

I dont mind either way, Having gear taken away isnt overly bad at the start but would be nice to have it back half way though but otherwise no big problem, besides gives the feeling of the new weapons better.

Yes no magic guns. I hated that in Point Lookout and in Broken Steel with the Tri-beam laser. It also doubley svcked that when you used the weapon that boost in Damage didn't transfer over to you.

I really enjoy it... At higher levels, the skill is still there and provides an opportunity to play the game in different ways. By level 30 your "niche" is well defined. When a game can force you out of this, so much the better. Being dumped into Zion National Park with little more than a war club fighting dozens of tribals sounds infinitely more fullfilling than mowing them down with a minigun.

I've never cared about having my gear taken away. First time I played Dead Money I hated it, because my survival skill was low. Let's just say I came out of that DLC respecting the crafting side of the game. I won't mind if gear is taken away in the upcoming DLCs, I'm just really glad we can return to all the new locations. Take my gear away, but I can return there with it. Hopefully the NPCs still spawn in the locations when we return, I'd hate for it to empty after returning.

They can structure the DLC better this way, starting you off with lesser equipment and slowly introducing new stuff.

This would prevent a level 35+ character marching in with power armor brandishing anti-materiel rifles and gatling lasers against half naked tribal people.

no.
i usually only like a fraction of the weapons, and its not like all my characters use every weapon type, so thats just 1 or 2 weapons, and that gets boring. if there are new weapons i like ill use em, even if i got something better, but if for example there are no new snipers or i dont like it/them i want to be able to bring my own

I don't mind it, going in with my own equipment would make the DLC very biased in my favor.
So it's more fun to begin anew with the DLC's arsenal instead.

The reason that they take your stuff is balance kinda hard to balance the dlc when you have people from level 1-35 carrying god knows what, eliminating you weapon and armor options makes this a lot easier now you don't need to worry about a guy in power armor with a minigun coming in and tearing everything apart and then complaining about how it was to easy, where as if you balance for a situation like that a lot of people are going to feel very underpowered and everybody complains it's too hard and that tribals with clubs shouldn't be able to take a guy in power armor. Removing your equipment is the easiest way to remedy the situation since weapons and ammo are tightly controlled, you will be able to return to this dlc so at some point I'd assume after the main quest is done you'll be able to return with all your gear.

TBH going to a new dlc with the equipment most of us have at lvl 30+ would make it waay too easy. Just for fun, I tried using a mod and doing DM on my lvl 30 with all his equipment. It was just very boring. No challenge at all. On the other hand, the run I had also at lvl 30 without m equipment was waaay more interesting. I had to actually start paying attention again and even died from time to time. As long as we can get our equipment back at the end and take from the dlc whatever we manage to carry back to the main game I am happy. On the other hand, not being able to return to a dlc area really bugs me. You explore an area, do interesting things and then poof you just have to pretend it is gone? Feels very strange. Exploring and scavenging in areas is part of the fun for me, as is being forced to change the way I play.

ill simply ajust the difficulty to my liking anyway, if i get all my stuff ill go to VH, if they take it and give me those bikinis i saw in the trailer ill just put it to easy or normal. i really dont care about challenge, i just like to kill stuff, explore, and play through the stories.

I prefer it. I like the feeling of making do with what I have around me. Something that I feel a post-apocolyptic game should always have.
