These forced third-person features... are they here to stay?

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 2:52 am

To be Devil's Advocate, I was kind of irked how my third-person playthrough was ridden with forced first-person finishers and cutscenes...

Then we're all in the same bucket. Except people who play first person are thirded into werewolf and horses as well.

its not even playing devil's advocate. its the same argument from the other side. it would be nice to be able to have pure 1st in all modes, and pure 3rd in all modes, whichever the player wants.

We're talking about being forced into third person finishers/werewolves/horse riders. What the heck are you talking about?

I was responding to the posts that said it was because it was turning into an action adventrue game. Sorry if you got confused.

I have actually gotten forced 1st-person finishing moves when in third person, so I suppose that can be a point of argument.

As for the horse riding and werewolf form, I'm not entirely sure. Perhaps the way horses are controlled would make for awkward movement while in first person? For werewolf attacks I think 1st person would work just fine. ( save for the finishers you perform on humanoids, as it would cause some seriously off-put camera angles)

EDIT: Ah, I see my first point was already brought up.

Maybe it would be best to use the quote button then. You managed it so well just now.

Every single game I play is first person. If not, I won't buy it.
If some parts force third person, that's OK as long as 99% is first person.

When in third person the finishing moves are always in third person.
When in first person the finishing moves are random (1st or 3rd).

And as I said before, most third person animations also exist in first person.

I don't understand Bethesda, honestly.

That and I wish some of the animations weren't slow motion. It feels a lot more brutal if the flow of time isn't really broken, save for a certain block perk which is actually pretty epic.

Weird. I play the vast majority of the game in 3rd person. 1st person breaks the game for me. When I look down in real live I see my feet..I'm not 343 guilty spark from halo.

I think the third person finishing moves are cool looking...but every time it scares me. Since it cuts to 3rd person when you die, everytime it happens on a finisher, for a split second I worry that I'm the one getting finished. Other than that, no complaints.

I'm not sure why they felt we had to ride horses and perform finishing moves in third-person, I want to play the game 100% first-person. Like I have always played TES games.

I don't expect them to change it, but it would be nice if they gave us the option to disable the third-person view for these actions.

Agreed, at least give us the option of changing it. I don't mind the kill animations as much as i am forced into 3rd person view, they look fine in 1st person.

Wtf is with the horse riding and werewolf? Most of the reason I don't use these is the forced 3rd person, I can barely even control the werewolf.

It's just immersion breaking for me, I'd change the crafting back to 1st person if I could. Theres no reason with this level of technology that they couldn't give us the choice of switching back and forth, FNV managed it so why not Skyrim?

Just waiting for it to be modded out.

People should be able to toggle them like in Fallout. I don't know why they didn't do that for Skyrim, it seems like an easy thing to do.

As for me, I cannot stop admiring the slit-throat animation if your dagger sneak attack is a 1-shot kill.

The only really annoying forced-third person thing for me is horse back riding. Can't stand it.

I suppose the finishers issue comes because someone consider that adding movie type cinematics would be a great idea. Action movies use slow motion and weird angle changes to add to the visual impact. The problem is that while in a movie this isn't allways a good idea, in a videogame is allways a bad idea.

In the horse case, I think they decide to force you to see how well they have done the horse riding.

In the wererat case (sorry I can't call that airless, huge handed, deformed and bloat headed thing werewolf. It's well done, but it's more ugly than fearsome. Aceptable for a terror movie but I wouldn't want to portrait my alter ego that way) I think it's a mix of the previous two reasons.
@nubius, there is a mod in SkyrimNexus removing finishers. sneak killings though are not removed. Seing your post I think you'll like it.

They shouldn't remove the character portrait in the inventory.

It doesn't seem all that bad though. I finally got the game earlier today and played 5 straight hours and only got 1 third person finisher. So at least it is only on a horse and in were-wolf form that is constant. ^_^ Could be a lot worse lol.

im with everyone else; it just doesnt make sense. you have 1st-person kills and 3rd person, why feel the need to mix them all together? doesnt that kind of defeat the purpose of having separate viewpoints: theyre supposed to, i dont know, be SEPARATE?! ive gotten 1st person kills while in 3rd person as well; in fact i seem to get kills in the opposite veiwpoint most of the time... is that completely counter-intuitive or what?

id imagine the point of using a horse as opposed to fast travel is to admire the scenery... which is impossible when half the scenery is literally a horse's ass. so we have a forced perspective change on something that works a lot better without it. same with were-wolves; i can barely control the bloody things in third person; half the time im not hitting anything because the hit detection is so wacked-out i have to be looking directly at the ground to hit anyone knocked down or crouching, or anything smaller than a human.

did they really just get lazy and not want to implement 1st-person versions of these things in a 1ST-PERSON game? i cannot comprehend any other reasoning.. i just cant. thank god 3rd person is more viable now, seeing as the game forces it on you for no good reason.

I would like to propose, as a requirement for being hired at Bethesda Game Studios, that all new employees be required to play all previous core Elder Scrolls games... might avoid some of these incredibly uncharacteristic design choices.

I know it's just personal opinion, but...

As someone who consistently plays the game in 1st person (only switching to 3rd to admire my character and do screenshots), I much prefer the 3rd person finishers. The 1st person ones look really awkward, while the 3rd person ones (complete with slow-mo and blur) make my character look all badass and epic. Great stuff. If we had to be stuck with only one type of finishers (1st OR 3rd), I'd vote for just 3rd every single time.

Just goes to show how different opinions can be. :)

edit: can't give feedback on horse riding or werewolf. I don't do either. I do wonder what the die-hard 1st person folks think of all the other 3rd person parts - like crafting, mining, sitting in chairs (which I remember also being like that in Oblivion. Don't remember if sitting down was 3rd person in Morrowind.)
