These forced third-person features... are they here to stay?

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 9:38 am

Just a minor gripe, but what's with the forced third-person horseback riding, werewolf forms, and finishing moves (Finishing moves one really confuses me... I've already seen first-person counterparts to most, so why force the third-person view?)? I've always disliked the thought and it's evidently here to stay in Skyrim, but will it carry over to future games? Will it become even more extensive in future games? Why is it like this in this game?

Its part of the shift towards action-adventure. I'm not offering opinion on this being good or bad, because there is a lot of good in considering "live roleplay" type game over "pen and paper" focus.

Its likely to continue, and games which focus on character development opposed to skill development are likely to fade again for a while like fashions. I hope its temporary, as the modern 3rd gen gamer matures, we may see some spectacular games that do not resort to pure thrill in the future as well.

Optimism keeps me sane.

I like some of the third person finishing moves. Some of the dagger ones look awesome.

Weirdest part about them is that I've seen every single one of them (except Dragon ones) in 1st person as well. And by that I mean EXACTLY the same animation.

This is one of Bethesda's incredibly silly additions/changes that makes absolutely 0 logical sense to me.

Yea, I'm not too crazy about forced 3rd person either. Options are good, so why take it away from us? Finishers still look good in 1st person, and Oblivion had 1st person horse-riding.

This bugged me. The finishers I could sort of understand, but werewolf? Horse riding?

It's strange. In Daggerfall, horses and werewolves could only be playable in first-person. Now, it's a forced third-person.

I quite like the 3rd person finishing moves (for now) and i think there's potential there. That said, there absolutely should be an option to turn them off. Forced 3rd person horseriding and werewolf form is just dumb.

Now, some of the finishing moves are in first person and some in third, does it matter what view I'm in when I'm fighting?

Exactly, I really don't understand the reasoning behind forcing us to go into third person during these.

I hate to say it, but could it be genuine laziness? I can't really think of anything else.

I don't mind so much for horse third person, since we're not attacking with the horse. But making me use third person in werewolf form is just :sadvaultboy: as im not used to playing in third person; its harder to control the werewolf.

When in third person the finishing moves are always in third person.
When in first person the finishing moves are random (1st or 3rd).

And as I said before, most third person animations also exist in first person.

I don't understand Bethesda, honestly.

I don't know how much more effort they'd have to put in to change it to first person if you're already in first person, though...

For the finishing moves, I'm just lost. It makes absolutely no sense, to me. For the horses and werewolves, however, it may have been a bit more difficult.

To answer the OP's question, the game has been released, and I can pretty much guarantee that beth won't add 1st person werewolves and horseback riding at this point. So yes, it is here to stay. Now if you meant in future TES games...I sure hope they add 1st person options for all modes.

I have no experience with either horses or werewolves, but I like the fact that there are a mix of first and third person finishing moves. Variety is the spice of life, people.

It's more like having wasabi stuffed down your throat when you already think tabasco is more than enough. ;)

Interesting, I've never been taken out of 1st person for a kill animation.

Well, werewolves and cannibalism are in 3P probably because feeding in first person would be... gross? overly gory? sick?
Horse riding? Beats me...

What the heck are you guys talking about? Todd himself said countless times he prefers 1st person and that most of the people who play ES do. I myself like thrid person but I mostly feel like the game was made for first person.

We're talking about being forced into third person finishers/werewolves/horse riders. What the heck are you talking about?

To be Devil's Advocate, I was kind of irked how my third-person playthrough was ridden with forced first-person finishers and cutscenes...

I always play first person but I will confess this.

I love love love the third person kill-cam finishing moves.

They just add so much awesome to battle, and really i never get tired of seeing them.

Heck...I wish we hand more...or we got better ones as we leveled up...more kill-cam please!
