Things that need adding to (or changing in) Skyrim…?

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 5:19 am

Here are a lot of things I have noticed in Skyrim, and didn’t like, or felt needed fixing or expanding upon etc. There are also things I feel should be added in future DLC. They’re just ideas, but I feel that they could make very good additions to the game, so please be as open with your opinions as possible (in a sensible and eloquent way, obviously) so I can take into account the views of the Skyrim fan community and consider my points. Enjoy! (Please note that I haven’t actually completed the game yet (all of it, that is), so if any of my comments/observations are not true or have already been put in place, please do say! There will be more to follow regarding the Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild and anything I haven’t yet done too.)

Followers:
· Followers can level up with you (like they do in Mass Effect). You can teach them perks and to 100% in skills etc. This would be very handy for followers like Sven. He has a mediocre skill in archery, and has a level cap at 20. You should be able to train followers in the ‘townsfolk’ category into battle hardened warriors, and increase their level cap to 81!!! You could train them/pay to have them trained to increase their skills. By putting in effort with you dedicated friends, you can have a small army of good (even fantastic, in some cases) followers. Could come in handy against dragons.

· Followers keep wearing the armour/clothes you’ve given them when you dismiss them. It just bugs me when they revert to the default stuff. Like I give Mjoll the Lioness a full set of daedric armour and then she swaps back to iron. Bad choice. (Speaking of Mjoll… Wouldn’t it make more sense if ‘Grimsever’ (Mjoll the Lioness’ unique glass sword found in Mzinchaleft) was two-handed? After all that is her weapon specialisation… (Just a thought.)) Also, all default weapons and armour should appear in a follower’s inventory when you replace it with something else. That way it takes up no space in their inventory, and you can treat them like a pack Brahmin, which just like Arcade in F:NV, they will complain about.

· You have access to follower stats, so you can see what perks you’ve given them, and how high their skills are etc. This would mean it’s easier to allocate equipment based on their skills, instead of going by complete guesswork.

· Followers should make it clear what kind of weapon/armour they prefer. For example: PC gives Mjoll the Lioness a Warhammer/piece of light armour. After, she states ‘I usually prefer to use a greatsword/heavy armour, but this’ll do’ or something similar. This would give the characters more personality (if only a tiny amount), and allow someone like me to equip each follower with awesome weaponry and armour that is to their taste and that fits their skill set.

· Give a dog a home. Instead of Meeko returning to his shack in the middle of nowhere, you should be able to send him to your house (one of them) where he will take permanent residence, until you tell him to follow you. Vigilance shouldn’t just go back to his stables in Markarth, he can do the same. What would also be cool is if you could give dogs as gifts to other dog lovers. For example, your good friend Benor (a potential follower in Morthal) is feeling a little lonely. You bring along Meeko and they become best pals forever. Little touches like this would be cool and perhaps a little heart warming to all those softies. (After this, Benor would have his own follower that tagged along, thus increasing your follower limit by one (I mean that you can no longer hire Benor or Meeko, you can only hire Benor and Meeko. They become a package deal.)) You should be able to breed dogs too. Sell them to people, gifts etc. Start your own business. Good money!

The World:
· It’d be cool if you could renovate the more run down cities – say, you complete the Thieves Guild quest-line, then afterwards you can organise a renovation project. New shops, etc etc etc. You get the idea. You really should be able to do the same with Winterhold – this’d be especially cool because the College of Winterhold would get a good rep, be known throughout Skyrim for being the one who restored Winterhold. Oh, and Winterhold needs more shops. That’s obviously the main reason.

· The video on YouTube; Skyrim Game Jam (or something similar) has a tone of great ideas – this starts my next point: house building! Enough said…?

· You should be able to support beggars! Take them into your home. Give them a job. Your servant maybe? Just something for those kind hearted souls who hate to see the poor suffer; I mean a gold coin isn’t gonna change someone’s life, is it now? I always thought the giving them a single Septim was just a little stingy. You could give them food and drink too. Add that option to dialogue or something.

Equipment:
· There should be more creativity involved in smithing – add your own patterns and colours, different hilts on swords – that sort of thing. It could be a bit like starting your own clothes line ‘it’s what all the mercs are wearing these days!’ ;).

· More Dragon Bone stuff! Obviously making a weapon from Dragon Scales ain’t gonna cut it on the battlefield (unless they were Heart Scales…?), but a huge Dragon Bone battle axe would be pretty cool… Am I right people?

· Pay blacksmiths to improve your weapons/armour. If you lack the skill to do it yourself, this’d be a great help at higher levels (provided you have the coin).

· Just to point out a bug – Ysgramor’s Shield doesn’t sit on shield displays properly, it’s wonky.

The Companions:
· Light Wolf Armour. Dedicated members of the Companions shouldn’t have to specialise in Heavy Armour to be able to wear the relevant uniform.

· Oh and there should be a Wolf Shield (and Light Wolf Shield) (just take Ysgramor’s shield, and replace the front patterns with a wolf’s head.). Skyforge Steel weapons need a unique look… Like the hilt or hand-guard-thing (technical terms, I know!) is a wolf’s head or something similar. I think additions like these would just add to the awe inspiring enormity of the game and especially its detail.

· Companion quests… Please make more of them! I felt that it all ended rather quickly. You could return to Sovnguard and free the Companion werewolves from Hircines hunting grounds or something. Ysgramor could help! Or at least add a few different radiant quests. Aela’s Totems of Hircine quests should be available even if you did ‘cure’ yourself. (A question – do the Companion’s radiant quests ever end?)

· To expand on the aforementioned point, once your Harbinger, you should be able to take members like Ria and Athis along with you on the radiant quests, level them up, max out their relevant skills, and then you should have the option of ‘deeming them worthy/honourable enough’ to join The Circle and to be given the choice of gaining the Beastblood. Depending on the character, they would refuse or accept. If they accepted, you would have to supervise over their first transformation and try to stop them rampaging through Whiterun, like a certain Dovakiin did… And if they refused, it doesn’t matter anymore since The Circle are no longer all Werewolves (spoiler below!!! To anyone who hasn’t completed the quest-line…)

As you get to cure both Vilkas and Farkas in the quests ‘Purity’.

And yes I think you should be able to do this with them all, as when it’s Thalmor crushing time (hopefully, by the Nine - shoot me in the knee kind of hopefully), it’d be useful to have half a dozen Wolf Armour-clad -Skyforge weapon-wielding companions at your side… Am I right?

· Another point with the Companions – there should be visible changes when you become a werewolf. I noticed that a lot of The Circle had very dark areas around their eyes. If this is a sign of having the Beastblood, then it should be present on the PC and all members of The Circle. If it never was intended as that… Then it should be. I think it would be cool to have some sort of visible alteration. Obviously, when your PC or another member of The Circle is cured, the eye effect is removed.

· There seems to be glitch – I cured myself of Beastblood straight after curing Kodlak, yet my general stats page still says I’m a werewolf. Guards also comment on ‘fur growing out of my ears’. Is this a common glitch?

I think there should be a continuation to both sides of the civil war (whichever side you took), Thats one thing I'd love in a DLC, the civil war felt too, simple. Take this fort, and this one, and then that one, then this city, that city, that city, hey you missed a spot, kill the leader. lol, It was fun, but needs some more to it, thats what I think. Some new creatures would be nice aswell.

The College of Winterhold:
· Thankfully, I didn’t actually run into any bugs in this quest line, but if anyone else did, please comment.

· Firstly, there quite simply must be more to do with the Eye of Magnus and the Psijic Order – I felt that this questline was more of a teaser for things to come (either that or it was meant as an object of torture). Where did the Psijic go when they disappeared into thin air? What is the Eye?

· The Archmage’s quarters should be customisable – you can add your own detail, like adding weapon racks/display cases and mannequins to your room – somewhere to display the Staff of Magnus.

· As mentioned in a previous part, I think that you should be able to rebuild Winterhold.

· More background on the Augur of Dunlain and the Atronach Forge.

· Atronach Forge – combining the offerings required for, all three types of Atronachs, could have some… Interesting results…

The Civil War:
· Great overall, I felt, but there are multiple bugs and improvements required:

· Whiterun does not get rebuilt after ‘The Battle for Whiterun’ quest. It should really (N.B: I was playing on PS3 against the Stormcloaks).

· Don’t know whether this is a bug or not, but not all Imperial soldiers recognise me as Legate.

· The leaders in Sormcloak Camps are still essential after the Questline is finished. This gets in the way of my attempted annihilation of them. This could be a group of Radiant Quests after ‘The Battle for Solitude/Windhelm’ quest. You could go to the respective leader, and then get given the quest to head to an enemy camp and kill them.

· The previous radiant quest idea could also link into another set of radiant q’s: clear out forts/towers etc. You could go around wiping out the resident bandits or whatever with a band of you troops, who would then establish a base there. This would effectively be like the ‘Battle for Fort ………..’ quests, but radiant (to a degree), and after the main story line. I say this as it always annoyed me how I was forever walking past big forts that could be very useful, yet they were overrun with various types of unsavoury beings. (Obviously, they could only be forts that weren’t already occupied by another friendly faction, like Stendarr’s Beacon in The Rift). This would be useful in your war effort – and yes I know that the Civil War is already over; I’m referring to a war that everyone wants at some point…

· When you defeat you enemy in a specific Hold, their Jarl and Guards are replaced by Imperials. This makes sense, but I think that after a while, the Guards should return to normal. What I mean is they start to wear their Hold’s armour again. This would just show how Skyrim is turning back to normal after the civil war.

The Blades:
· There could do with being more interactions with this lot. If you’re not new to The Elder Scrolls world, then you might have developed an attachment to The Blades (TES IV: Oblivion). If not, then you may still feel like you want to have more to do with them. I myself dislike what The Blades have become (the Paathurnax ordeal etc), but would really like to be able to do more with them. For example, wouldn’t it be great if you could set up a more suitable home for them? In the current game, after you induct three people into The Blades, Skyhaven Temple becomes a little more homely – food on the table, fires lit; you know - the usual stuff. But I discovered the courtyard out the back the other day, and my inner architect started looking at ways to improve said courtyard. A forge, workbench, grindstone, better training area etc. You could get all this built for them or something; I’m just throwing ideas around here, but I’d love there to be more stuff like this.

· As an expansion on my previous point, it’s obviously pointless to have a forge without a Blacksmith. So, you could train one of the inducted Blades to as high a level smithing as yours is. Once it’s a hundred, well their going to give some Dragons hell. (With the Legendary Blades Armour and Weapons they now use, I mean.)

Houses:
· Houses, they need to be better. Things have a habit of flying off tables, and a lot of things don’t properly display on weapon racks, mannequins, and displays (The Longhammer; a unique Orcsh Warhammer, is an example)… Like the Stormcloak General Helmet doesn’t even appear on the mannequin. Just a thought, as this has always bugged me. Oh and you should be able to put anything in display cases, like all of the Daedric relics you find.

· Adapting your own home should be something that you can do. I always thought that the game was lacking an element of customisation to it, like changing things around, adding weapon racks etc, building a basemant in Breezehome because it’s so small… Etc.

· Housecarls should have a daily routine, instead of just standing around in the house all the time. For example, they could go shopping, or just go to a tavern.

· Servants – as mentioned before, taking a beggar into your home as a servant would be cool. But obviously this would extend past beggars. Servant’s Quarters could be a purchasable upgrade for some of the larger houses.

· BUG: in Proudspire Manor, some of the Weapon racks don’t work, and the wall behind the mannequins looks funny – it flickers.

· House building! Anywhere, however you want, with whatever you want – provided you have the coin, of course.

Miscellaneous:
· More info on Blackreach and the Crimson Nirnroot. Why was it built? Why is there a dragon in it? And why is the Nirnroot red, and what’s its significance (Nirnroot in general I mean to say)?

· As you’ve probably gathered from my other comments, I am all-for the inclusion of building stuff, whether it’s for yourself or others: rebuild Winterhold, build up Morthal etc.

· Houses in every capital – in small Holds like Morthal, you should be able to buy a house if a house owner dies. Although in Morthal you could just buy the burnt down house and rebuild it. This isn’t needed if you can rebuild the towns though.

· In addition to the previous point, if the house owner dies and the PC does not buy the house, someone new (an NPC) should move in.

· Investing in a business should have some noticeable effects on the shop – the stock is better, the building is cleaner, and some business men/women should take on an apprentice, or something similar.

· BUG: some enchanting alters glow a bright blue, obscuring your view.

Wow, that was a loooot of posts ...

But I totally agree! You have no idea how many times I've wanted to rebuild Winterhold - it's good to see that I'm not the only one.

My main problem with the Civil War is that it ends, but people don't seem to realize it. I drove the Empire out of Skyrim and ended the war, and yet people keep telling me that they hope the war ends soon. The moot never meets to elect a new High King (presumably Ulfric), and ...
Spoiler
The Emperor still comes to Skyrim during the Dark Brotherhood questlines with no problems, and the Penitus Oculatus continue to hang around the Emperor's tower in Castle Dour long after that questline has been completed.

But that said, I still love Skyrim. :D

jah I had an idea you would like.

Once done Thieves Guild Story, it opens a rumour network where you can bring down a Jarl with rumours about him, as his/her people turn against them, ya smile knowing ya did nothing but just suggest they had an affair with that person ;).

Yeah i spent a while on this... Not even done yet haha!

But i see what you mean Solitudian, that always bothered me. I know a lot of people will think these are pretty small things, but they can change the game it a lot of ways, mainly by making it make sense... of course the people of Skyrim may just be really stupid and not notice the lack of war going on. Lol.

Rulke55, love your idea. would be a good addition!

I used to be big on 'we have an amazing game so let's not worry about the little things' ... but recently the little things have started to bug me A LOT. I'm hoping for some good DLC which will involve a lot of this stuff, but I'm not sure it'll happen. The war never seemed that major anyway, seeing as there's no skirmishes at all until YOU join the legion or Stormcloaks. Aside from the occasional Stormcloak prisoner being taken away by Imperial Soldiers, of course.

Rulke55 another good idea, i always liked the possible link with the Snow Elves, Eye of Magnus and Dwemer, and to expand on that would sure be interesting.

But to learn of their culture would be interesting

yes the little things have been the same with me.

and i understand what you mean about the civil war, it almost took the backbench, as it were, while it should have run parallel to the MQ.

Id love to see stuff similar to the above implemented in future DLC or patches, but the dev team said they were going to do more beefy stuff for DLC, so its unlikely we'll get anything like this. Probably expansion of key plots, and entirely new ones.

Things Skyrim Needs (FOR CONSOLE),

#1 - The Ability to build my own home. OR a great addition of homes/dwellings to purchase/repair/take over. A Fortress in ruins we must clear out, then rebuild and hire guards to defend. Or a tower on top of a huge mountain we can jump off of in ethereal form :). Or a cozy cabin in the forest with all the things we need, like a forge, grinding wheel, alchemy station, and enchanting table. With all the gold we collect, give us something elaborate and amazing to spend it on, what better way than to build your dream home.

-Different color armor, either the ability to change it ourselves, or add in different colors so we don't pick up the same old armor in dungeons and camps. Being able to dye my imperial armor, or leather armor black would be awesome!

-More varieties of armor styles. I've seen 2-3 diff styles of certain armor types, but honestly, that just isn't enough variety for the amount of hours we spend playing. adding in another 2-3 styles for each armor type shouldn't be to much to ask ;x, even just one or two to each would suffice imo.

-More unique weapons. There are some nice options within the game, but why no dragon bone weapons?!!!! I think adding a couple different styles of weaponry for each material would go a long way for role playing, and overall enjoyment. instead of one option for a blade give us 2 or 3 options, an the ability to change colors/hilts to have some sense of ownership over the item.

-More consquences for our actions within quest lines. I know it's probably too late to add this into any of the existing storylines, but w/e you plan for DLC, I'm praying there is more reaction/consequences to my actions and choices.

-More opportunity to raise levels and skills, maybe a new perk tree or new perks added to existing tree's? When it's all said and done, the DLC and or expansion that gets released should help us level up, and earn new perks/abilities along the way, because by the time it's released a good amount of us will reach the level cap, or be close to doing so. Without more progression, the new DLC will seem blah to me.

-MORE to the thieves guild. Somehow incorporate the ability for us to BUILD it back into a respectable guild, cuz all we really did was rid it of a corrupt scum bag, and it remains a guild in shambles with no outside respect. Let us fill the treasury AND USE IT to improve the ratway hideaway, and the guilds prestige.

-MORE spells

-Bigger, and Better Bosses. Giant mudcrab :) j/k but why not a massive Giant that's twice as hard as a normal one, or something to that effect.

Thanks Bethesda for an incredible game! hope these suggestions help.
