I think I unlocked the ultimate reward in an expert chest

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 6:01 pm

Rather get 4 gold coins than find an Uber Pwnhammer of Dragon One-Shotting inside every other chest as many RPGs like to do.
Why do you even bother to open chests then?

At least you improved your lockpicking skill. Might only take you 7 picks to get 4 gold next time.

Got a couple of duds, too. But have gotten plenty of winners. Found a paralyze enchant sword and a 50% frost resist necklace in one expert chest. These don't get mentioned in threads much, but they happen often enough to make openning chests worthwhile. If it happened everytime we would probably see a bunch of threads about how chests broke the game. Cake and eating, etc.

It's the god of master chests giving you a hint to let him rest in peace.

I found many chests in Oblivion which required the used of multiple lockpicks to find that it contains ... wait for it... a lock pick.

I got a carrot and roll of paper one time. i mean lets face it, the best items in the game are either made by you or earned as part of a quest. Random loot just isn't that great, only good for getting enchantments.

I look at it this way... I'm not the only adventurer in the world, right? I routinely dump off items in chests when I'm overburdened (all characters). So... a looted chest with nothing but some hide boots? Seems fair to me. Why should the difficulty of the lock determine the value of the items? That's JRPG thinking, not the "closer to realism" thinking of TES.

Scaled loot is terrible.

Hand-placed loot is FAR more terrible.

Here, let me map out a circuit to get all the most powerful loot in the game and trivialize the whole game, instead of, ya know, EXPLORING.

That's not what I meant. It's just a bummer especially early in the game when you go on a suicide mission into a huge epic dwemer ruin, face off falmer and dwarven centurions and all you get is a silver ring and a steel sword.

Don't think of it like a super-complex lock purchased to store the most valuable of valuables. Just think of it as an exceptionally old, near broken lock that only a world-class locksmith could pick through. That situation doesn't guarantee you great loot, just a very difficult lock to pick.

There are 150 dungeons in this game. It would be impossible to find an upgrade in each and every one. Just vendor the crappy loot and buy something nice when you can afford it.

I guess it's just pure bad luck. But it always happen. One time I spent 12 lockpicks on a master lock, to fin 2 lockpicks and an apple.

Next door I spend 2 lockpicks on the door, see an unlocked chest, open it, and find a glass sword. I was level 12 so I enjoyed it lol

The loot of a master chest is based on your level not the level of the lock.

Yeah, I checked out the chest in the Markarth treasury room, Picked 2 expert locks so I could get 200 gold, if there going to change the amount of gold you get based on your level, they should at least do the same for the locks.

Maybe a thief used to live there and he used that chest to practice on.

I guess it adds the realism right? Maybe they spent all their money on the fancy chest and had not had a chance to get some more valuables to put in it?? Heck if you picked the lock to one of the locked file cabinets (I guess that is like a chest these days) in my house you would get the maintenace records for my truck.

That would actually be pretty cool, first an master door with an trap outside, then an master chest with an chest with an good trap on, inside a letter that the bandits still owned money for the chest.

Ha, this is the reason I never pick any locks above and including Expert. I just console them open. You gonna give me four gold and a sweetroll, Master chest? 'S cool. Only took about three seconds to get you open, anyway.

Why do you even bother to open chests then?

Why bother open them in Skyrim or bother looting well anything. Especially if you invest in Smithing and Enchanting. Once you get a Daedric weapon, you never need to get another weapon. That Daedric weapon is the same as every other Daedric weapon. It doesn't matter if you got it off some hard named boss, crafted it, or found it on a Skeever at level 20 or 80. That is what reall irks me. Loot needs to scale better, and what you have a chance of finding should ALWAYS be better than what you can craft. This does not make Smithing obsolete, the only real reason to take Smithing is to improve items anyways...

If you broke into the safe in my house, you'd find a guarantee for a TV I bought in 1985. There might also be some discount vouchers for a holiday park that closed in 1991. Maybe, like me, the owner of the chest lost the key a few decades before (when a few gold was worth more than it is now).
