Is This Cheating?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 2:46 am

I've played Fallout New Vegas normall up to level 8. Then I discovered a glitch in Helios 1 where I was given infinite XP. I used this to get to level 30, my friends say this is cheating. I justify it by saying that I've already gotten to level 30 in Fallout 3 and this game feels like it should be a expansion so I wanted my old character back. They are also saying it makes the game too easy to have max stats. I laughed at this since its impossible on a PS3 to have max stats(all 10 SPECIAL, all 100 skills). Also, since I am level 30 some enemies have gotten much stronger and since I play on normal-very hard the game is still really difficult. They think I'm a noob because I cheated my level, they have "mastered the game without cheating". I laughed really hard at that when I saw that they only had 26% trophies. They don't even have the Fallout 3 platinum like I do and they call me a noob. These people were playing the game on very easy until I told them they get more XP on harder difficulties. Apparently you can master New Vegas by beating the story twice without even attempting hardcoe mode. LOL these people make me laugh. I'm a noob because I used something that was in my game to level up faster.

It's a single player game so it really doesn't matter, politely tell your friends to go and boil their heads. :goodjob:

I play a game to have fun, not for bragging rights or trophies. It doesn't matter what you do as long as you enjoy it.

Yes, i consider that cheating. But my take on cheating in a single player only game is that i stop doing it once i receive a formal letter of complaint signed by all the leaders of the game's factions :P

Is it cheating? Yes. Yes, I do think it is. At the -very- least... it's glitch exploitation... which is pretty much equivalent to cheating by most folks' book.

Does this make you a nOOb or some crap, worthy of ridicule? Probably not. I say that the only person whose opinion actually matters in this case is -yours-. Did you enjoy the game better for having experienced it the way you did? I don't know. How can I say? Do I think you definitely destroyed some of the challenge, of course you did! The game was -meant- to be played from level 1 to 30. You bypassed that, through abuse of a glitch.

Very few people will argue in your -favor- that your methods were legit.

But I think there might be more folks like me who think your friends ought to shut the hell up, and mind their own damn business.

Unless you were -bragging- about it. Then you deserve whatever you get.

I wouldn't considered it cheating since it made the combat much harder. I consider this glitch "importing" my previous character from fallout 3 to new vegas.

I would call it cheating since you are exploiting an unintentional bug. But as mentioned, who cares? it's a single player game. No harm, no foul. If you are having fun, it doesn't matter. I'm addicted to console commands myself.

Tell your friends to go soak their heads and pull the sticks out. Sounds like they're just trying to be uptight pricks to me.

Nope I never bragged about it. They just started this because I wasn't playing the game for a week. I disagree about taking out the challenge. The combat it much harder now because all the enemies leveled up with me.

Single player game. Only thing you are "cheating" is yourself , out of actual gameplay. But since what you are doing only affects you, it only matters if it made you not really have, you know, fun. :)

Personally, I like to play the games I get, see how the story and the game mechanics and gameplay unfold as I go through it. If you glitched to level 30, for example, and you are in a zone sort of geared toward a level 15, then you've lost the benefit and fun of figuring out how to deal with the situation if you were actually at the right level. Part of the fun for me in a game is figuring out strategy (which, granted, sometimes means ""run the hell away!") but still - I get a sense of accomplishment from carefully cleaning out a building and knowing it was a tough fight, that I went through stims and such and it took a while. Romping through because I am over-powered due to a leveling glitch loses its entertainment value pretty quickly.

To sum up - your game, play how you want. :P

Actually, very few enemies level with you. This isn't FO3. I took a character 74 hours to level 30. You skipped the hard part. The game is hardest in the earlier and mid levels not the later. By level 30 I was an untouchable god that didn't have to worry about anything. You took out the challenge by exploiting a glitch. Obviously you know that Obsidian didn't mean for you to be able to do what you did. It's a single player game though, so you only cheated yourself out of any sense of accomplishment. Obviously, you feel some level of guilt about it, or else you wouldn't come here asking random strangers to justify your glitching for you.

There are some people who play these games without fast travel and feel that this really improves the experience. I'm not one of them and considering the back and forth of some quests it sounds pretty miserable to me but to each his own. If you're enjoying the game more as a level thirty super-character I don't see anything wrong with that, it's not like you're affecting other people's experience.

Is it cheating? Yes, exploiting a glitch to get infinite XP is cheating.

Leveling up to 30 in fallout 3 was a pain in the ass that I never want to do ever again. I was actually level 12 when I started this glitch. Getting to level 12 happened a lot faster than it did in fallout 3. The leveling system seemed to be a bit easier. I didn't bother with it due to the frustration I had when leveling in fallout 3. I beg to differ about it being easier, my level is 30 but I'm not overpowered enemies can take me down if I don't watch myself. Remember enemies level up with you so the enemies in my game are stronger. I cannot go into a building a clear out everything easily. I get owned if I not careful. I play very hard alot, so no challenge is lost. The companions are more of a game ruined than my glitched level will ever be. Boone is immortal and runs ahead of me to slaughter everything. I can barely get a kill with Boone with me. Also I use a sledgehammer and my skill is only 22.

You exploited a defect within a game. Don't matter how you rationalize it (importing your F3 char) it's still cheating. Seeing as it's a single player game, play however you like, who cares?

And no, you don't get more XP on FNV for playing on harder difficulty. That was just in F3.
And no, enemies don't scale to your level. At least not in the Oblivion kinda way which you seem to imply.
And yes, you did make the game easier with this. Setting the aside the fact that enemies don't exactly scale, there are also other things affected. How now you have raised science skill and can hack terminals which you would not be able to do otherwise, you have raised lockpicking and now can get into places you could not have otherwise, get stronger weapons, armor and other stuff because of it, you can pass speech checks during conversation which you wouldn't be able to do until later in the game when you have enough points to place into speech, you raise repair which makes less of a problem to keep items in good condition, you get perks that help a lot earlier (and I still do not mean help in combat). With high science, repair, etc. you also get more options for crafting better ammo, stimpaks, super stimpaks, etc. Some vendors update their items based on level I noticed, so you also have access to better weapons, armor earlier.

But with all this does it mean that what you did was bad? If you like it more this way then no, even if I do believe you have robbed yourself of some of the experience this game offers. Only one thing, stop trying to rationalize the cheating, it's probably what made your friends react this way. It's annoying. I used the "unlock" command lots of times in my game. Is it cheating? Hell, yes! Do I feel the need to "explain" why I do it? Hell, no! My game, my business.

Again, very few enemies in this game level with you. This is not FO3. And if you don't like leveling then maybe RPGs aren't for you. What's the point? And you're not even making sense. You get owned, but Boone kills everything? At lvl 30 you shouldn't be getting owned by anything unless you severely gimped your character or have crappy weapons. You glitched the game on purpose. Stop trying to defend it as though you did something admirable that's making the game more challenging.

I'm level 30 but i'm not a untouchable god. I still got to sneak, hide, and run away from enemies. I play on very hard alot so that is probably the reason. I do not care for getting to level 30. I know I can do it, I've done it in August with Fallout 3. I did not take away any challenge, the game is still hard. I wasted perks on exp bonus and explorer, so i'm not playing with a good build. This build was designed to explore which is being limited by Obsidian's stupid invisible walls. I always hated that I couldn't attempt to hack a very hard computer or pick a lock at low skill levels. Basically the game is telling me that i can't even try because i'm a noob. That is stupid because in real life you don't need to be a professional to try these things. So mainly I leveled up to max, science, and lock pick. I maxed guns and speech as well. Right now I'm playing with melee weapons and my skill in it is only 22. So right now my game is very hard, but the sense of acomplishment will come from the trophy i recieve. I do not feel guilty, I've already "mastered" fallout 3. I always have the hardcoe mode for a challenge. Mainly I posted this so you can make fun of my idiotic fallout "master" friends. Who think they are masters because they beat story twice. LOL they didn't even complete fallout 3.

Cheating or not, your friends have no room for ridicule. You are playing on a much harder difficulty than them, and leveling up without getting upgraded weapons to go with it will make the game much more difficult.

What a joke. Trophies don't mean [censored]. If I had to guess you're about 16 or 17 right? Stop saying "noob".

And you do realize you DID cheat to get the trophy anyway. That's inarguable. You didn't earn it. If a trophy is your endgame then your friends are right in calling you a cheater in that regard.

These people were playing the game on very easy until I told them they get more XP on harder difficulties. sounds like exploiting not cheating :P

,but for single player games it doesn't really matter, you can play the game in what ever way you wish to. If this were a multi player game then I personally might feel as though you cheated me becasue you progressed that far that quickly when I may have spent much much longer doing stuff to gain the level 30.

Also consider this. It's not cheating to create a mod that awards a perk every level as you prgress to level 30 & reduces the requirements for the perks and other things like reduced crafting requirements. One uses the existing exploit to gain what you want, the other alters the game itself to introduce what you want from the start.

It's not black and white at the end of the day, my advice is don't compete with friends in terms of trophy's and achievements, just kick back and enjoy the ride.

Is it cheating you ask, yes it is... you're exploiting a flaw in the game, I hope you feel dirty on the inside.

But really, who cares? Single player game, only opinion that matters is yours... tell your friends to shut up. :swear:

Also... enemies don't scale with your level, so you being level 30 has no bearing on enemy difficulty.

You can't cheat in a single player game. You can only alter Game Play.

If by altering the game play, you make the game more fun for you, then great. If you make the game more challenging, great, if you make the game less challenging, so be it. As long as you are enjoying the time you are spending doing it.

In FO3 I played "clean" for my first few playthroughs. Since I'm on the PS3 the DLCs became available to us fairly late, but I played up to level 30 with the Broken Steel expansion, then through the rest of the DLCs.

Even after playing all that, I wanted to start a new character from scratch to do a "perfect stat" run, but at that point I was no longer interested in going through the early grind and I had gotten rather accustomed to the Grim Reaper's Sprint, so I did the merchant glitch for all my starting gear, rushed all the stat bobble heads that were accssible pre-quest, farmed the re-spawning Big Guns and Science skill books until they were maxed, then did the scrap metal glitch up until level 21 so I could get the Grim Reaper Sprint and the Explore Perks before I even started the first quest. By the time I hit level 30 I picked up the Almost Perfect Perk and scooped up the last of the SPECIAL bobbleheads bringing all my SPECIALs to 10 and all my stats to 100 though leveling/skill books etc.

The point is, everyone has their own tolerance for cheating and glitch exploits. In FONV alone I've already played 2 clean runs up to mid level, but was unhappy with the stats of my first two characters so I'm currently on my third playthrough. After a while, "grinding" for early gear by picking up every little piece of junk to trade in for gear got boring, so on this playthrough I'm using the merchant glitch (which works very similarly to FO3's glitch) to alleviate the grind for early gear. Yes it's technically cheating, but sometimes time is a more important consideration and after spending more than 80 hours on my first two characters, I now simply want to get back up to speed to the same level I was at before I restarted, and maybe finally get around to finishing the game to see one of the endings... :)

Yes! This is the answer I was looking for. I am not a diry cheater! I altered my game so I could play my Fallout 3 character. You can cheat in single player games, its called a cheat codes and cheat devices. Fallout New Vegas has none of these however.

Cheat devices and cheat codes arent even cheating per se. They just let you alter the system as we generally know it. I exploit a glitch at The Vikki and Vance casino for more bottlecaps. Am I filthy rich? yes, Am I going around spend crazy? No. It never hurts to have the upper hand when you never know if you'll need it.
