...This is a joke, right?

Bad Teddy, sorry I can't help with your issue, but just wanted to say that I really sympathize. I think I encountered about every bug in the book on my first character. The last straw was when I summoned my Flame Atronach and noticed it had the aura of a Storm Atronach. Then I noticed that my enchanted Daedric Mace didn't seem to be visible even though it was drawn. Suspicious, I went into third person view - and the only thing visible of my character was her hair and eyes.

I was just a pair of floating eyeballs and a wig, with a confused Atronach for a companion.

I'm also the only person I know IRL who has had such severe and numerous bugs with Skyrim. My friends and family have had only minor issues since the game's release, and one of them (my nephew) plays on PS3. When I complained to him about my 18 MB save file, he seemed surprised. He never had any save bloat or framerate problems.

It seems to be the luck of the draw, and some of us got the short straw. I just started my second character and everything seems to be going smoothly so far but I have my fingers crossed. I hope you will have better luck with your game soon.

(Sorry for the long post!)

I have never had any problems with Blood on the ice, even at release. I played it and it worked out fine... well, not realy *fine* as I fell for trick the first time =P

But no bugs or anything.

I would be very concerned if you fell for it the second time...

I've done Blood On The Ice around 8 seperate times and I've never had it bug whatsoever, I don't see what's broken with it now that they've even patched it. Only problem I have with it is the chets in Hjerim by my bed never shows up, but that's besides the point.

Use UESP and follow the directions precisely (it tells you how to avoid every possible bug) and you shouldn't have a problem, unless you're TRYING to go out of your way to break it. (Which would be silly)

So I'm on my 3rd attempt with the same [censored] character.

The first time it only took me until the 20s in levels to realize that Bethesda actually hadn't fixed Blood on the Ice and that I couldn't buy Hjerim. But because I definitely enjoy losing dozens of hours having to remake characters, so that was a great thing to happen!

Then I remade the character, did a few quests, and tried to do Blood on the Ice again after patch 1.6 dropped and it was fixed... again. Well you know what? It was still [censored] broken. YAY another restart. I was so thrilled. And yeah, I did it perfectly by following every guide in existence to getting it NOT to break, repeatedly.

Remake number 3, character remade; no [censored]ting around this time. I went straight to BOTI and completed it to insure that I could get Hjerim when the time came (wouldn't you know it... I repeated the same thing character 2 did and it worked on one single attempt; how logical). Success! After much excessive (fun fun fun!) work gathering funds to buy Hjerim, I managed to purchase it. Looked like everything was finally going to go well... And then I realized I was playing an Elder Scrolls game.

A game where you'd have to be the luckiest person in the world to make the silly assumption that you could spend your money on the game, play it, and not spend more time dealing with [censored] than you spend actually playing.

So now here I am, level 52, working my way through my Dark Brotherhood questline (again) after having completed the Thieves Guild questline already. And you know what? Shadowmere won't spawn. Nope, not at all. No, he isn't dead. No, I don't already own a horse. No he didn't show up at any of the other stables, and yes I did try reloading (14 times... I counted). I do have these really exciting and entertaining [censored] bubbles to stare at though.

You know, maybe it's not just me. Maybe everyone has to restart their character 10 times as a [censored] rite of passage to play the [censored] game. Well, no thanks.

So I just wanted to write you a personal thank you note, Bethesda. I'm really enjoying all of this [censored] nonsense.

Bad "FIX YOUR [censored] GAME" Teddy
That was a very entertaining post lol. I feel your pain. I can't play for 10 minutes without running into a bug, or glitch, or texture problem. Beware, though, the people who think Skyrim is the best game to "bless" this earth will jump all over you for insulting their god (Bethesda).

I had the Hjerim problem on my first character, no problems after that.

I also recently had the Shadowmere problem on my level 61 character, though it didn't really bother me.

Anyway, it's an extremely large game with alot of potential for bugs, and as you said, you shouldn't play a Bethesda game expecting it to be bug free.
The thing is it wasn't even close to bug free. Look in the bug section of these forums and you'll see bugs being posted every five minutes.

" Blood on the ice " wouldn't start for me in much the same manner as you OP, there where no NPC's beside the body in the graveyard. To solve this I tracked down the old woman who's posting the flyers every where and had a chat with her which in turn started the quest. Then the Thain guy wouldn't talk to me to push the quest forward to where you need to get into the house, to solve this all I did was break into the house my self hand followed the clues as normal, which forced the quest forward again.

Now on two attempts from the last 1/4 of the quest the damn thing would stick on me again at the part where you point out a certain someone to be arrested out of Ulfric's place. I had to reload the autosave from just before and instead of talking to the Thain guy I went to the wizard and then continued from there, there are two ways to end the quest but I wont spoil it but it did work from that point on and I have had it work ever since as long as I do it the same way as above.

As for shadowmere I don't really know what's happening there, it kind of seems like the script just didn't kick in which would lead me to think a reload would solve it. But you said you tried a reload, so, hmmmmmmm, you get nothing as an action option when standing in the pool ? As in you cannot see Shadowmere but you can activate him.

Ouch. Yes, its incredibly annoying when a quest just won't work. though it seems to vary greatly between players though. I've never had a problem with blood on the ice for example, but i've always had a problem with a certain DB quest; the quest just wouldnt start. Astrid refuses to give me the quest no matter how much i tempt her with my sixy figure.

Thank Talos for console commands.

I think I must be one of the lucky few because that quest works fine for me.

So it always has for me. As has Cidnha mine too. And that's why it is so diffcult to fix, if it was broken everyone the fault would be easy to find. But as it only affects some it's propably something they even can't imagine causing the bug.

Despite, or perhaps rather because, computers follow their programming to the letter these bugs can be very difficult to find.

And you know the worst part?
This game isn't worth all your troubles. It has the worst quests/plot, shallow 3-sentence characters, it's ridiculously dumbed down, and its barely an RPG.

 right, that slipped my mind.
But OP did say that the graveyard scene to start the quest wouldn't trigger, which forces you to force the quest forward by talking to the old woman posting the flyers, or by talking to the thane guy. I think it can be set off by talking to that Calixo ( what ever his name is ) who runs the museum in Whindhelm as well.

I feel your pain...i had a mage that was level 50 before starting the college quests only to encounter a quest breaking bug with no fix

It svcks that such a great game is so plagued by bugs but if you ever played previous TES games then you know its to be expected

Remember kids, if you find a bug, start over, that's the only solution.

Finding an earlier save, starting over the bugged part maybe for different solution? Nope, that's too logical.

I'm sorry you're having so much trouble with the quest.. From what little I know about software, the bug isn't random--you must be unintentionally triggering it.

I've always avoided it by doing the graveyard scene before I started the civil war quest line. It's worked everytime I've tried it.

This here I agree with, it is not on to have a game so bugged beyond belief like Skyrim is.
Bethesda needs to know its not just ok to release a product that is barely playable and random parts of the game breaking is not acceptable.
It's people that say oh its ok that allows Bethesda to think that its just fine to release games in the condition Skyrim is in.

For some of us, the condition of the game is acceptable because these game breaking bugs just don't exist for us.

Yep. It's perfectly logical. Because the point at which a given quest breaks flashes on the screen in big bright neon green letters knowing when precisely the quest broke so you know EXACTLY what point to go back to. You've just got to be quick enough to see it! I wish I had the eyes I did when I was a child, I probably wouldn't have missed it. This does validate it being acceptable to have to keep 50 saves per character just to be sure though, so you're totally right. Doh :(

I don't think there are actually any legitimate ways to force anything regarding BOTI. If the graveyard scene never triggers, nobody you talk to will mention any part of the quest. All they'll do is keep mentioning things about a murderer lurking again, but none of that triggers BOTI. Some people have apparently been able to get it to start by breaking into/getting the key for Hjerim and examining the evidence. While those of us not so lucky folks are met with "InvestigationTarget" objects that don't do anything.
