Tips for new players!

*facepalm*

Really? Damn, it would have been nice to know that 400 game hours ago.

You wouldn't lie to me, would you? I'll feel even worse if this is printed in the manual or the in-game Help section. XP

Yep, really. Stumbled across this gem only 40 or so hours in. When you do it in the favorites menu you will see a 1. or 2. appear next to the left/right designated hotkey.

Thanks. I'm away from my Xbox this weekend. I'll put this info to good use soon enough.

Don't get hung up on an item you might have missed or a cave you passed by. You will find 1000 swords, axes, chests, etc....

And there's pretty much nothing you need that requires money, except lockpicks. I don't remember my character buying anything from anybody in 24 levels.... except lockpicks. :)

I have never bought a single lockpick and I pick EVERYTHING. I think I have 80+. Only Master level locks eat up 7-10 sometimes....

Thanks Fallout 3 and NV for teaching me lockpicking...

The two below listed web sites are the best places to check if you run into problems with the game like quests, etc. - and you will. I prefer the UESP site because their search box is excellent. Type in a quest name, dungeon name, subjects like smithing, follower, etc., and you'll get a wealth of help. Also, most of the search results like dungeons have a list of possible bugs at the end to help you out. Also, something a lot of people don't do, check out the first page that comes up, it's a long list of places that can help you.

Good luck, and if this is the first time you're posting here, have a fishy stick http://www.uesp.net/wiki/General:Fishy_Stick

If/when you start the MQ keep a spare set of cloths, even if you wear armor. Or you might end up running around naked... ( and yes I did...)

Don't rush through the main quest, and read books and just enjoy the world! =)

If there's anything you dont like about the game, find a mod to fix it.
If there's anything you feel should be added to the game, find a mod to add it.
If there's a mod you want that hasn't been made, make it.

Why are they traps?..sorry im a new player

They are runes!11on!sauce

Anyway, reading through these "Stay away from the forums," "Throw away your life," hmmm interesting choices. My number one tip is as soon as you start the game stay away from the main quest for some time.

Giants svck at climbing. You can usually find a small cliff they can’t reach to fire ranged attacks from and get a kill at a very low level. Great for boosting Archery early on...

Don't fast travel (use only carraiges). It will ruin the feel of exploration and not give you a chance to become familiar with the setting. Other than that, play how you want to.

But, for fun, you should save the game in front of a giant camp, then instigate a fight to see what happens. It's actually pretty funny.

Even 360 users can hot key 2 items. Add items to favorite list, for example a bow and a sword. Next open the favorites menu by pushing up on D-pad. Highlight the bow and push left on D-pad. Highlight the sword and push right on D-pad.

You’re welcome. Now you can quickly switch between ranged/melee or favorite defensive then offensive spell without pausing the action.
Wow. Wow. Wow. I'm about 100+ hours in and didn't know this, thank you!

You can manually mine ore veins by equipping a pickaxe as a weapon and swinging at the vein.

Wait really? I've never tried this...

One Handed weapons generally have overall higher DPS than Two-handed equivalents when Smithing is factored in, since Smithing adds flat values, and not percentage increases to the base damage (Which is probably what they should do,but whatever).

Don't underestimate noncombat. Especially on Higher Difficulties. Playing a dedicated Healer with a companion protector is a very real, and often very effective strategy.

Maces may at face-value seem to be very weak if you factor in weapon speed. However, maces (And warhammers) have extremely high Stagger rates. Power attacks can usually subdue even the strongest humanoid or mid-sized animal. A Daedric Sword may only stagger an enemy with a power attack one in every three, a Daedric Mace will stagger seven out of eight power attacks. (Varies with target)

The weapon specialization perks are effectively useless (Except Assassin's Blade in Sneak). Don't waste your perk resources on Bladesman/Deep Wounds, Hack & Slash/Limbsplitter, Bone-breaker/Skullcrusher. I hope that one day Bethesda will rebalance these perks to individualize the main weapon types more.

I would suggest not attempting to complete all the major questlines during your first playthrough. Do one or two and save the rest for future characters.

^ this

Play with the character creation for awhile... unless your on pc you can't change what they look like. Save right after you get off the Cart in the begining, before Hadvar say's "Who are you?". As soon as you can look at your character in different lights. Save even if your not completely happy, then go back to the previous save and try again. Their is nothing like getting to lvl 10+ and decideing you really hate the way your character looks, especially if you've cleared a cave or dungeon.

If you are having problems winning a battle, don't forget that you can change the difficulty of the game. At the beginning I was getting very frustrated trying to beat a Deathlord until I realised that I could go into the game settings and change my level.
Don't be put off by some of the posts on here. If you are a casual gamer like me, who is just playing for the pure fun of the game, there is nothing wrong with that!

^ This a thousand times.

I've put myself through hell, all for the sake of playing on expert, when I would've had more fun just lowering the difficulty.

I thought this was Tips, not Exploits O.o
Unless you know something about basic rudimentary physics that we don't, if you buy training from somebody, and they're still standing there afterwards, where else would the gold be but on their person? That's not an exploit.
