I really didn't think the M4 needed to be in this game.
Granted you can say the AR15 CAR15 whatever was being developed in the 50's and 60's but those designs had a MUCH different look. The M4 just screams 90s -2000s. They didn't even try to "cartoonize" it like they did with the AK-47(Chinese Assault Rifel) and the G3(Assault Rifle). Well then again the Desert Eagle was in the first two fallout games and if I'm not mistaken that gun (or atleast the look portrayed in those games) was an 80s design. Guess it doesn't matter that much then.
I won't complain too much about it because everything else makes up for it and I know they can't make everyone happy. There's probably more mods for M4's than ANYTHING else for FO3...
First person view makes it look crappy, but then again I think all fallout weapons in first person look crappy.
The trick with fallout 3 is playing in 3rd person with the camera close enough over the shoulder to not show him wogging (which looks equally as crappy as guns in 1st person). That + use VATS is how FO3 is meant to be played.
I'd have to disagree sir, the Assault Carbine is virtually identical to the Colt Commando branch of the CAR-15 family.
Just take a look at http://world.guns.ru/assault/as50-e.htm and compare it to the Assault Carbine- the second image is practically a spitting image of the Assault Carbine.
Now you can compare it to the http://world.guns.ru/assault/as17-e.htm. You'll notice immediately that it looks very similar to the CAR-15 family. This is illustrative that the M4 is not really a modern gun at all, it's the evolution of a 1950s design, and the direct descendant of a 1960s design. But compare and you'll see some differences, as well as features shared by the Commando and the Assault Carbine.
Most prominent is the carrying handle- you'll notice that on every version of the M4, even the original model, has a removable carrying handle, unlike the CAR-15. You'll also notice some adjustment dials which are not present on the older rifle. The Commando also has a shorter barrel than the M4. Both of these features are present on the Assault Carbine.
So no, those designs did not have a different look than the gun in our game, in fact they match the look of our gun nearly exactly. Hope this was informative.
About that sight post... it's not so much that it's small, it's just you can't see any defined prongs on the post that are typical of an AR front sight...
Now remember kiddies, this gun fires 5mm, read: minigun ammo, AK-112 ammo, etc.- so it's not exactly a real gun. They may have given it a unique iron sight system that does not exist in real life to differentiate it with real designs, like they did with the wood furniture on the M16 lookalike and M60 lookalike.
