Ugly Characters do you start over?

Nope, doesn't bother me at all. Not everyone is pretty. Ugly characters need love too.

I use a PC, so I do not have to restart the character. But I often use the showracemenu command to tweak my character's appearance after I have played them for a bit. Sometimes I go back several times. Sometimes only once or twice. My latest character Primrose is the only one I have no done this with in a very long time. I guess I got lucky, she came out of the oven right the first time.

*guilty* And I'm still not really happy with one of my char's, Like most everything about the face, except the eye's, but I HATE his skin tone. I don't know if it's my tv or what but my char's skin tone is realy dark, which in and of itself is ok, but in some light's he look's like lobster. I may have to start this build over...but I'm gonna try.. L33ty's trick, so I don't loose what he did...if it don't work...oh well, at least I have the save started at "and who are you" don't av to right the wagon...lol

Lol at the lobster.

One time, when i started the game from the beginning(with wagon sequence)i dont know how many times i started over but at that time i had no idea Skyrim creates a savegame for me right before the character selection. So that one time the stupid wagon started to shake and clip like crazy..it looked like an earthquake was going on..hehe...and the wagon including me,horsethief, ulfric and that other guy got stuck in some giant tree while still talking to each other..that was hilarious XD

Annoying, yes, but I have found the most efficient way of running through Helgen Keep and can finish the opening tutorial in less than five minutes. That includes the character creation (I have made the same Bosmer about 10 different times).

Aye, I've gotten pretty good at speedrunning through it. I know where stuff is now so I don't need to waste time picking up worthless loot, I just sprint and hack my way through.

I've started new characters before over little details. Never really had one I'd call ugly, but after a while there would be something that would just bug me. Most often it ended up being the hair. Unfortunately I think it will continue to be that way without new mods. Khajiit don't have that many hair choices and I kind of hate them all.

The lighting at character creation is horrible, by the way. It's too damn bright.

Yeah,I had one character i played 195 hours with, but i didnt like how he looked anymore so i started over with the same character but this time he looked different. currently 145 hours in and he is my main character.I wished we could change your appereance in-game and no i am not playing on pc. Or even change race, but that would be weird

This. I want to change the character's hairstyle at least, but it would be really awesome to change the face, eyes, etc. too.

I've restarted 5 or 6 times in the past couple of days trying to get a character to look right.

*raises hand*

11/11/11 I didn't get past riverwood for the first 3 hours...

THIS.

I always play an Argonian on my first playthrough of an Elder Scrolls game cuz I find I'm less picky about appearance for them but it still takes forever before I'm satisfied.

I couldn't imagine playing off a pc with no "showracemenu" to make tweaks.

Altmer and Dunmer are the characters who suffer from this most for me. I got my Nord and Bosmer perfect on the first try (albeit after several hours of minor tweaks in better light). Dunmer took me weeks and I've never been happy with my Altmer... poor guy can't make it out of Helgen.

For anyone interested: If you go with Ralof the loot from the Imperials is worth more, but if you go with Hadvar, he doesn't reminisce about fallen comrades (saves maybe 10 seconds of dialogue). If you sprint into Ralof/Hadvar when they first start to talk about untying you, the animation begins and the dialogue is skipped saving another few seconds. The rest of Helgen is spent sprinting past enemies, lol.

Yeah, I have this problem with most character generators. Especially Oblivion's and FO's...which are atrocious (not only for the overall aesthetic of the faces they construct, but the dumb design decisions behind them, like the linked sliders.. which makes it even more time consuming).

That said, best way to speed up the process is to count your slider preferences (starting from 1, left to right). Write em down, and then tweak accordingly after you see the mistakes in better lighting. It's probably the best way to achieve some sort of symmetry, rather than going strictly by eye. There's always an algorithm, if you will, to a good face. i.e. If cheekbones are at so and so height, then the eyes should be no higher than some other set point. When you break too many rules, you get a mutant.

Especially in fallout. I thought I made my character pretty and she ended up looking like a freeside hoker with clown lips!

I spend about two minutes picking the race, and then making sure the hair doesn't bother me (the only thing I ever see in 3rd person), and then I name it and play. I don't understand why people get so obsessed about their character's looks. The way I see it, you're born with a face you don't choose, so are my characters

But I don't see anything wrong with obsessing over it. It simply makes no sense to me.

I wish I could be like that. I'm picky with design, I guess? I draw too, but I often crumple dozens of pieces of paper before I get something I like. Same with music.

Yes, ugly character bugs me a lot. I don't mind they are not handsome or pretty, the main reason is age. All the youngest face I could made was like in late 30 or 40 years old, all I want is late 20 or early 30. Also the hair style is very ugly too. I wish someone can import dragonage hair style where there are some good looking short hair.

Fortunately I am on PC ver. So I can keep modify my appear almost every time I load my save.

Although it's a lot easier with this little trick I learned, just make a save just before you enter the character creation screen. Change the face around until you like it, but DON'T ENTER THE NAME. Just open the menue and load the most recent save for your char.

does this work?

My second character was a truly fugly Nord...I put up with him for about 6 levels, then relegated him to sovengarde via delete.

I thought I gave him scars, but I actually gave him smallpox and pimples.

When taking a look at my character in his new armor in Riverwood, I noticed he looked like one of the characters from Diagnosis Murder ... I quickly restarted the game.

On Xbox? I just wear a helmet since I never see my character's face to begin with, and no one else does either.

On PC, I've got access to showracemenu to find tune the faces of my 'screenshot characters'.

Nah, I've never started over because of something like that, but I do spend a lot of time in character creation, and I don't leave until my character looks the way I want him to. My biggest problem before was the forehead wrinkles. I always had these deepset wrinkles on an otherwise youthful looking character. It irked me, but it wasn't too bad since my character always wore a helmet/hood anyway. I moved some sliders around on my most recent character, though, and I got them to go away.
It's been smooth sailing ever since. Sometimes I have to stop what I'm doing to take a good look at my character because, in my eyes, he really does look great.

I'm on the xbox and yes.. I've done Helgen over 9000 times. :/
The character doesn't have to be beautiful per-say, just suitable and something I can relate her story too.

Edit: I also spend hours coming up with a suitable name that fits the lore. .___.

I am very happy that "showracemenu" exists, I feel sorry for people on consoles, redoing Helgen again and again gets very annoying.

I know that console code exists and I use it extensively.

Nevertheless, I loathe / dread / contemplate suicide over the thought of / go on the edge of going emo over... Helgen.

I wouldn't say it's about 'ugly'. I have plenty of characters deliberately made imperfect, but few of them was I happy with from the beginning. I tend to have a very strict idea of what I want my character to look like, so after some 20-30 minutes of tweaking and throwing oneself into the world, one naturally throws a fit when the character looks entirely different outside of Helgen.

Hence my 20 hours-or-so of character creation. Arnold the Barbarian is a prime example. I remade him six times before I thought he looked vaguely like Arnold Schwarzenegger from most angles.

I wish I could be like that. I'm picky with design, I guess? I draw too, but I often crumple dozens of pieces of paper before I get something I like. Same with music.

Indeed. An artist's greatest critic is the artist him/herself, eh.

Oh yeah... I've restarted tonnes of times. I really wish there was a console reset available just as you leave the cave in Helgen. It takes that long to see the character in good light.

I'm on xbox and I've started over tonnes of times as well, because in the actual game (after Helgen), the character tends to look nothing like the character I thought I'd just created.

It's so easy to make them look really pretty (or handsome) in character creation, but seeing them in character creation is kind of like seeing a movie star in a magazine - ideal lighting + make up + photoshop, and ingame you see what they actually look like: in the morning, without makeup and after a bar fight...

That said, my character is now wearing a Falmer helmet. It looks kind of cool on her and covers her weird looking eyes. =)
