Unofficial Guild Wars 2 Discussion Thread

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 12:03 am

Since the last GW2 thread is pretty old, I'd figure I'd make a new one about this upcoming MMO.

I'm pretty excited for this. I don't usually like MMOs but this one doesn't have a monthly subscription (you buy it, you can play it forever) and it's looking to innovate a lot with its quest system and active combat.

The latest news is that the game will have some http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/02/17/guild-wars-2-pvp-to-feature-300-player-server-vs-server-battles-and-siege-warfare/.

On the 20th an embargo will be lifted, which will allow people with access to the new press-only closed beta to post all the video footage they like. Youtuber http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAjgKGFcKfM&list=UUy1Ms_5qBTawC-k7PVjHXKQ&feature=plcp is going to spend a lot of time showing footage and providing in depth info, so that'll be an excellent channel to watch.

Discuss away!

I am not a big MMO'er but I did have some fond memories of Guild Wars. I am considering Guild Wars 2 but got sick of following it for years and no release date.

Also, there will be a console version apparently:

Still trying to be a normal member, eh Pov? You can't keep starting threads that aren't about either new mods or technical issues forever, Pov. :P

The game does look interesting though. I may check it out in the future.

You try stopping me. :P

Though I guess the 'unofficial' addition to the title was a bit redundant. ;)

I can't wait for this game to come out, I'm not as excited as I will be about it though. I'm also not as excited as I should be about the open beta coming this spring, but I will probably get to that point once it arrives.

I haven't been following to closely these last months because I like to be surprised, so I probably won't watch any of those videos coming out.

I'm just looking forward to getting back together with all the friends I made in GW 1, hopefully they come over to GW 2.

Also, the PVP sounds awesome, I'm gonna really enjoy that and I'm hoping for a summer release date of this year.

I'm happy for Pov's continued interaction with us commoners, as it stands the only mods we have real interaction with are Leydenne, Princess Stomper, and Summer.

But yeah, I'm very excited for this. Never played Guild Wars, but I've been following this for about two years now so it shouldn't be too confusing once I pick it up. I'm probably either going to roll Mesmer or Necromancer for my first character. Mesmer seems like it will be a completely new gaming experience, as I've never played a game with something even close to its skill set and mechanics.

I gave up on waiting for GW2 and lost interest in the play GW1 a long time ago. I'm not sure if I am ever going to get it anymore.

Same. Exact. Thought.

I wonder if Anet announcing it in 2008 was a mistake

I'm so [censored] pumped for this game. GW was probably one of my favorite games of all time. It wasn't really that good, but it popped my MMO cherry and gave me some outstanding PvP experiences.
It's hard to wait this long for GW2. So hard. :(

Yea, I also stopped following it for the most part because it never seemed to give signs of life, but if I happen to here about its release at, well, release, I can't see why I wouldn't buy it.

...I feel interest renewing again, :D. Something to follow other than the corpse of Warhammer Online!

Urgh, the Curse videos of the Beta look TERRIBLE. Choppy, and they apparently have the settings set on so low that it looks like a cheap FTP game. Until I looked at some of the IGN footage, I was getting really worried that the game had taken a major turn for the worse.

Same. Exact. Thought.

Yeah, they've really struggled with building and maintaining the hype-train. MMOs take a long time to develop, but they should have been more wary of "opening the doors" on the game as soon as they did. They announced the game when EotN came out in 2007, then it seemed to become vaporware until they began announcing classes in 2010 and have dragged that on until last November. Because of that, it feels like the development cycle that will never end(even if it isn't that unusual for an MMO).

Anet is now doing closed beta signups on the official site. Good luck getting in everyone, even though you probably won't be able to discuss your experiences here for a while if you do because of the NDA.

I signed up, I doubt I'll get in though, because I'm not getting my computer for around 6 months, so I had to register with my laptop specs. :/

Mine are probably even worse, but Anet has stated that they're trying to build it to be accessible to most PC specs, so who knows?

Also, I was just thinking how what we've heard of the soundtrack sounds like TES. Then I looked up the artist and it was Jeremy Soule, didn't even know he composed GW1's soundtrack.

System Requirements - Recently we found out a tidbit of info regarding system requirements, ANet has been testing the game on video cards so old that they need to get it on special order because it's no longer manufactured. Looking at Newegg that means those GPUs are from around 2002/2003. I've also seen them say that they really don't even develop their games on high end hardware so that they don't forget about the lower end of the hardware spectrum. The GW2 engine is a modified version of the GW1 engine and if they manage to allow people to even run the game on such old hardware, I'll be amazed. Most games these days have minimum specs of 3 year hardware, the possibility of 8 years is mind-boggling.

YES! My crappy laptop actually has a chance of being able to run the game! :celebration: :celebration: :celebration:

Hah yep, been playing the first game since June 05..though I don't play it much anymore. I only got up to r3, and that was way back in 06 before Factions came out. I also mainly used the BoonProt build only in RA and very sparingly at that haha.

Yep, he has done others as well.

When I first heard http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=2-_g8NZr1tA#t=50s of Skyrim's theme, my very first thought was the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8x9Az_7o_o

God, I miss Guild Wars :(

Hopefully I get to beta test GW2 :D
