Unofficial "Will My PC Run Skyrim" Thread #57 w hard

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 10:45 pm

Since there is a ton of threads about these new texture packs I'm not sure where to ask this - so I guess I will ask here.

I'm on the fence as to whether or not Skyrim can handle the new HD textures ... I can run mods like this: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=607 and I have several other high res textures installed.

So I'm wanting to try. What I fear is that there is no turning back. I'm not aware of how on Steam you can uninstall only one DLC (I assume it will be seen as a DLC). Is there a way to roll back if my rig cannot handle the textures?

I've backed up my original textures BSA, but far that this may not be enough - especially if I need to ever verify my game cache, which would then trigger downloading these huge files again.

thanks for any help.

Hi all,

Two questions:

1. Will my system setup allow me to run the HD Texture Pack DLC?

System Info
Motherboard - ASRock X58 Extreme
Processor - Intel Quad-Core i7-920 2.66 GHZ
RAM - 6GB DDR3
Video Card - ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB Video RAM

2. My monitor is going to be 8 years old in a few months and I am thinking its time for an upgrade. Its current native resolution is 1280 x 1024. Would getting a newer monitor increase game performance at all? Any recommendations on what kind of monitor I should get for gaming?

Thank in you advance for any help you can provide

I believe getting a higher resolution monitor makes a minor performance hit rather than up it. Also, I am not sure about your GPU if you are going to try the new HD texture DLC.

Stick around for other's input.

Correct. More pixels == more resources needed to push them around.

Bethesda's ignorance about hardware means that their auto-configuration is often going to be incorrect, such as in your case, probably because they do not understand that the 430 simple cannot manipulate more than 256 MBs of VRAM on a constant basis, nor more than 512 MBs on an occasional basis, within the game environment. Everything past 512, when gaming, amounts to a marketing scam.

Hi again guys,
I've finally saved up my money for a new GPU and I was talking to my parent's friend who suggested that buying a GTX 570 is probably worth the extra money rather than buying the 448 Core GTX560ti.
I have the funds for it although I'm not sure if my rig ( or more specifically my PSU) will be able to handle the card.
My specs are:

64bit Vista Home Premium
Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9300 @ 2.50GHz
2x Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT, 512MB GDDR643
4GB RAM
And my PSU is a Delta Electronics GPS-750AB A

I'm hopefully going to sell my two 9600s on the cheap just to get at least a little cash back but other than that my main worry is just whether my PSU will handle the 570.
Once again, thanks a lot for your help guys. I'd be a ruined man without you!

Well, as I also stated: a lot of overkill. Ultra and then some.

You may notice a hitch here and there with the CPU, but I've got a weaker one and I only get small hitches and that's around areas with heavy light effects.

Is there any CPU out right now that won't notice any hitch?

Not sure really, I haven't had the chance to do extensive testing and research. I can say that the patch improved the hitching for me to the point where it's barely noticeable.

My Portable PC specs:

RAM: 6 GB RAM DDR3
Processor: Intel i5-2410M
Graphics Card: GT 540M 2GB

Atm im running everything on High settings except the shadows which im runnning at medium settings. But I was wondering if you could help me out with optimalising my Skyrim expirience by telling me what settings I should run the game on. Im probably going at like 35-45 FPS atm as it is. I also have the HD pack installed.

Here in this thread, the subject is how well will a given collection of hardware already assembled into a computer will handle Skyrim. You actually want and need to be asking the kinds of things you want to know in this thread:

(Not here in the Skyrim performance thread.)

Delta is an above average PSU manufacturer that provides a lot of decent quality PSUs for OEM systems, albeit low watttage units. If you have a 750W unit, it will handle something like a GTX 570 fine with plenty of wattage and +12V amperage to spare:

Is there any CPU out right now that won't notice any hitch?

You have a 2500K, which is still one of the better CPUs in the market...it's not going to "hitch". If you want more speed, consider overclocking the chip. They are very OCable and rather easy to do as well with a bit of time and research and a new CPU cooler. Coming from 2500K owner OCed to 4.6GHz. Flies through any game with my 2GB Radeon 6950 Oced with unlocked shaders.

Should see mediumish settings at least.

The HD 5670 is a quite respectable graphics card for Skyrim, at its original comparatively low quality textures. It doesn't have the balls for the HD texture add-on, but it will look nicer than on either console platform.

Hi all.
My spec:
core i5 2500k 3.3 Ghz
Ram 6 Gb
Gtx 560 (non ti)
Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate
Question:
I tried to play an Ultra with AF 16 and AA 8.
In open world I have 28-33 FPS in Whiterum 30-38.
Why so low perfomance?
PS
Game version 1.3.10

That won't run it too well. You need a real GPU.
