unplayable on sdtv

hmmm. My issue with this is if you are on federal aid, you shouldn't be spending money on video games. I don't want to sound harsh but I'm in college, pay all my bills, and work my ass off. Everyone who is saying they cant afford to buy a cheap computer monitor and a vga cable is doing something wrong. Your either lazy or just not really trying. If you cant eat healthy for a week to buy a video game, do you think you should be buying said video game? Id be buying some chicken, fresh veggies etc. That way I would have more energy to work harder or get a new job.

If your complaining because your tv is old and you just dont want to buy a new one, not the developers fault. If they are making a product, a beautiful one, they have to use what is current. Otherwise they aren't going to make any money. Optimizing for sd would take at least another 6+ months of dev time to cater to 155 of the community. Yeah someone looked up that 50-60% of household have HDTV's, but I would bet most of the people playing video games are the 50-60% and maybe 10-15% of people play on SD.

Also the information here is laughable. Someone said their SD plasma was still working? They NEVER made a SD PLASMA. Plasma screens are only HD. Someone also said they have a sd tv but were mad cause they didn't have a hdmi cable? SD tv's do not have hdmi connections, those are HD ONLY. When somone asked is your television rectangle or square I nearly pee'd my pants.

Im done with my rant. Im just tired of people that complain about every game on a sd tv. You know it wasnt made for that, its gonna look like ass. Standard defenition is OUT DATED. Stop expecting them to cater to a older technology.

They should have at least warned us that it wouldn't be playable on SDTVs so that those of us who had them could avoid spending what little money we have. Or, I don't know, include a screen adjust option like most games have nowadays? It's not asking that much.

Hey man,
It's not any of your business what I spend my money on. I made room in my budget to buy Skyrim, and I am disappointed in it, and I am voicing my problem on the forum. I hope that Bethesda fixes this problem because I really don't think it would be as hard as you say. I am not lazy, and I work very hard at what I do. That was uncalled for, mate.

The job that I have is where I eat lunch every day, and the food is decent. I am a very good cook, so I've been able to create a healthy diet using noodles as a starch filler. I still don't see how any of this concerns you though.

Releasing a new game with the assumption that everyone who plays it has an HD TV is just wrong.
As a player, I should not have to go fork out several hundred dollars that I don't have just to be able to play.

Why would you want to play a good looking game like Elder Scrolls in standard anyway? You just waste your money and the entire experience...defeats one of the major purposes of the game.

Why not just save for a new screen and wait to play it? It's not going anywhere. They're still fixing it and working on dlc.

You can get like 32-42 inch screens now for like $270-500. If you can buy a 60$ game and a what 200-300$ console why haven't you saved for a display this whole time?

How were we supposed to know that this game would be unplayable on our TVs, when our other games look fine (mine, at least)? If I had known, I would have preordered something else.

I also play sometimes on a SD TV and the compass is missing. The game looks great on my HD TV, but I also have a 360 hooked up to a SD TV. It would be great if a patch were made where SD owners could change the screen area. I just can not justify throwing a perfectly good TV away to upgrade.

Because I have a perfectly good TV that I don't mind using.

This business about telling us we should save up the money for an HDTV is a waste of time.

We're on a technical forum asking Bethesda a technical question. If you would like to comment on the financial decisions made by other people, this isn't the place to do so.

Anyway, AtomicAndy6, that's great news. I can't wait to hear what Bethesda has to say on this issue.

Most of the text in game is small to me. The only text that isn't is when I am having a conversation with someone (when I walk past people and they say something, it is still small). All other text is tiny.
We probably just need an option for bigger text. I caught a disease and didn't know I had it. I earn gold but can't tell how much I earned.

Secondly all that needs done is to adjust the UI so we can move it up and down and see it in full.

The picture can be left alone.

Does changing the settings in the 360 menu do anything?

The only things that are cut off on my screen are the beginning text in the top left and the other text's ending in the top right

oh well, who needs text when you have dual weild sword and mace

Total BS.

BTW, I've played two other 360 games that were optimized for HD (Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, PGR 4), and although the text was very small, somehow I could still read it. And very little was cut off. Both my eyes & my TV haven't changed since.

It IS possible to have the best of both worlds.

Also, it's in the developer's best interest to fix this. Not everyone bought Skyrim at launch, and those who didn't may be reading this, and may be using a small/outdated TV...

A lot of people in this world just don't have their priorities straight. I work with a few guys that always say they are working from paycheck-to-paycheck, and have less than $100 in the bank with no savings account. Really? These are grown advlts, mind you, 30+ year olds. Yet when a chance to work overtime at work comes up to get extra cash, they never volunteer! Very lazy and incompetent of their goals in life. I met some people at the midnight release at Gamestop too, that said they could barely afford this game. Unbelievable, people.

For some people, Skyrim may not only be the only GAME they get all year, but maybe even the only LUXURY ITEM!

And these people may be literally down or their luck rather than lazy. Imagine that you got fired from your job, your wife/girlfriend left you, et cetera, and you want something to dull the pain. Something that gives you the ultimate bang for your buck...

Exactly. This was the only game I bought all year, because I couldn't afford more and because I thought it was going to be worth it. If it were not for this problem that could easily be fixed (and indeed is easy to fix in other games), Skyrim would absolutely have been worth it. Bethesda updated Oblivion a lot, throughout it's lifecycle. Why does this have to be any different.
All I want to know right now is that a fix is coming, so I can just wait for that to happen instead of selling this baby back.

This surprises me, I know this doesn't fix your problem but you could also try playing on a computer monitor if you happen to have one laying around but you'd need something like a RGB Xbox video cable (about $30).

Hey guys hang in there and ignore the tools that like to act like they have money to waste.
I'm sure Beths looking into it to see if there is a feasible way to help us.

Sorry alot of you are having much worse problems then I am. I have a rather large tv so I'm only losing alittle bit so its annoying to try and tell how much gold I have but not impossible and the left side of my screen doesn't matter to much. I really hope this gets fixed, I've learned to live with it but I feel the disappointment you all have. I have faith in Beth and Gstaff told me he'd bring it to the teams attention. Just got to wait and see.

Is that what it really is? How is that even possible? Every game I ever owned for Xbox and this is the first that, what, specifically made itself incompatible with a particular type of television? Without an option to display on normal TVs too? For sure, fix this. I will just speak up for the people who may have 300 or so dollars and an old TV and say I'll be damned if I should have to buy another TV. I won't spend it because I don't want to spend it and should not have to since my TV is not the problem. It is not broken. It works just fine. Making this game incompatible with it is THEIR error to fix. None of the other games are like this. I hated how impossible it was to read text on the old Morrowind to and yet Oblivion didn't suffer this flaw and was a newer game. Now that's back too. I can't read the tips in load screens.

For any who know about the RGB video cable, does that make a difference in how the Xbox puts out the signal? Could getting one solve the issues? Barring that, if anyone could point me to how I'd get the Xbox to hook to a flat screen monitor, I totally have one of those for my desktop.

I do not believe I like what you are implying.
I work two jobs thank you so very much.
Im 34.
I have a brain mind you, it was just that in my family small things like paying the rent and having bloomin' food on the table were more important than getting me a hoity-toity piece of paper.
I've worked since I was 16 and payed my own way since then.

Just because I can not spend the money nilly-willy on a new tv, or just because I feel I have enough perfectly working tv's already to justify purchasing a new one does not imply I am a slack-jawed lazybones, pray tell you.

Now if we are done with our banker's mentality some people have to earn a living around here.

I'm not buying any DLC until this is fixed. If Bethesda wants more of my money they are going to have to work for it. Its not that difficult, just add an option to resize the screen and game text.

Same problems here. Screen cut off on bottom and sides, and completely unreadable text, except for books.

Is there any hope Bethesda will patch this? The text is much too close together, and the edges of the screen are missing slightly.

An HD TV will cost you a lot of money.

A much cheaper alternative is the XBox 360 VGA cable that lets you play it on your computer screen.

If it helps you fully enjoy the game it's definately worth a go.

Well at least Gstaff is talking with the team about it. If the problem unfortunately cannot be fixed, I hope they at least address the issue with Fallout 4 with SD and HD options. I'll have faith, but I will not expect there to be a fix, though I do hope a fix can happen.

K, I tried it again on a slightly bigger TV (also CRT), and although the sides aren't cut off as much, the text is actually HARDER to read now because the tube isn't as well built - it "blows out" the whites (and yes, I messed around with the picture controls).

I might be able to fix this with a component cable, but I'm wondering - can I get Bethesda to reimburse me for it?

Prolly not. And it's still a little bit cut-off at the top anyway.
