Video Game Cliches

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 6:10 am

On the other hand, I guess I haven't been playing enough games, because this doesn't bug me at all. But that's because the only "kill cam" games I've played are FO3/FONV/SK. ("FPS multiplayer" is likely the key here. Haven't played one of those since the original Counterstrike & Unreal Tournament.)
Well in older games it would be beat boss or mini-boss and you get your cut-scene CGI victory quick time event kill cam, seeing it applied to every applicable enemy makes it seem completely cliche to me. I've seen it in quite a few games. FPS games usually do the least abuse of it as you only get it when you lose a life in non-hardcoe multiplayer modes but they still do the slow motion follow the bullet kill-cam quick time event in story mode every time.

Americans and Russians vs Germans.

Zomg kill da bad nazis!

Too bad the majority of the Wehrmacht weren't party members and, in fact, despised the party and the fuhrer. But what the hell. Dehumanize them anyways!
Well its either Germans, Russians or the Arabs.

Hmm maybe we can have a Falklands based CoD in a few years. Much more original.

They also make the Germans complete idiots (1 stationary machine gun kills 200 soldiers, they shoot everywhere except at the target, they run around like headless chickens, etc.).

COD 5 (Or whatever number they're up to), starring an a global army ran by the Welsh, Belgians, and Finnish. Who cares if the concept is weird and nonsense, it's better than 'GERMAN HOLOCAUST CUZ WEZ AMURCANS! [censored] YEAH!' 5.

I take it you never played Black Ops on the hardest difficulty level. It was tricky getting through that level as Reznov with the machine gunners and rocket launchers they were pretty accurate.

Black Ops isn't WW2. Hardest difficulty level isn't mainstream.

Thanks for saving the world, hero.

...NO LOITERING!

Or, how games fail to recognize your importance. You get drafted to an impossible cause, save the world, everyone knows you, yet you are treated as the same crap you once were, get no discounts, and people still tell you to [censored] off when you talk to them.

Plot armour.
The guy is right there! Why can't I just kill him!?

Exactly this. I'm looking at you, Kai Leng :stare:

And the immature maturity. If the game has 18+ rating (PEGI, equals M in the american system) it usually just tells how much gore there is. They say average age of players is around 30 years now, how about making some games that have maturity outside of gore and boobs for us?

:lmao: I was thinking more about mentally mature themes. Racism, morally diffcult choices etc. Some Bioware games have had this, but not to the extent i'd like to see.

Morally complex games? Good sir you speak madness! We can't have gamers thinking about complex real world logic!

Games that try to make you feel like an extraordinary badass compared to everyone else in the game, but all the obstacles are so trivial and feel like an extended tutorial. So once you're done blowing up that building or killing that boss or whatever, all your allies (typically your token helper on the intercom who explains every bloody thing to you) tells you how amazing you are and how nobody else could pull such a feat, I'm just rolling my eyes and thinking "no, you practically held my hand through all of this".

I don't object to that so much as EA's penchant for "buy our new DLC!" in loading screens. Er, immersion-breaking much?

Boss fights. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. The end boss kinda messed up the ending to Bioshock, I feel the game could've been better without it. And the boss fights throughout Deus Ex Human Revolution were terrible, same for Alpha Protocol.

In System Shock 2 it was even fairly easy to end up in a situation where it was impossible to win the final boss fight, because there isn't a single ammo vending machine in the last two levels of the game AFAIK. And she's immune to one of the melee weapons.

I don't know, I found the final boss believable, but the fight itself just seemed to be there for the sake of having an endboss.

Being betrayed. Half the time at the beginning of a game (usually fps or action/adventure) I sit there and guess who is going to betray me.

Arrrgh, don't even get me started about EA and their fetish with nickel and diming you to death by locking all of their content behind the DLC curtain.
