They're "necessary". The theives guild starts out "down"... so just leave them alone and you're good.

Even Mjoll gives up on fixes Riften. Wish there was a way though as that was not the type of Thieves guild I was expecting. Mjoll was right in saying they are just bullies and such.

I was hoping after joining them that you could rebuild them to be nicer. Not a chance. You gotta keep your hands real dirty to play the thieves guild in Skyrim.

I do not think you can. I do not believe there is even a quest for doing that...which would seem like an OBVIOUS quest since 90% of teh people in town want them gone.

It would be less of an omission of a quest to get rid of teh Theieves Guild if everyone in town was not complaining about them constantly. Why make the whole town complain and then not have a quest? All the people there are downtrodden and there is nothing you can do about it...a totally depressing city to quest, live or roleplay within.

I'd really like a "wipe out the thieves guild" quest, too. Maybe we'll see something like that in a future patch or DLC?

There really does need to be a "wipe out the thieves guild" mission that when you accept it switches them all to non-essential.

Ideally there would be multiple quests, where you catch them in the act of thieving one at a time and they all get put in prison, with the final quest being the downfall of

Ideal situation : join, get rid of those bloody gems stuck in inventory, then butcher them. Nothing like an inside job when dealing with the likes of them.

But...but...but... you CAN'T get rid of 'em! What if some player, some time, did that and then changed his or her mind and wanted or needed to do some Thieves Guild something or other? They couldn't, and Bethesda certainly can't allow any player to not win at everything they try or to be limited or restricted in any way! Everyone wins, all the time!

Yeah their definitely should've been an option to destroy the Thieves Guild but hey don't do the quest and they won't be able to get out of the gutter.

If by owe money you mean can afford the extortion. They don't owe them any money, it's the equivalent of the mafia going around asking for "insurance" money because "something bad" could happen to your store if you don't pay.

I completely agree. When I first arrived in Riften and spoke with Mjoll, I thought, "Wow... so, we'll be able to get rid of the guild or join it.. Gold star, Bethesda!" It is a really lame city, if you RP the good guy/gal. Makes you feel so impotent. I don't ever see it changing, either. Doesn't seem like the DLC type of issue.

Someone said we can wipe out the DB? Is this true? I imagine most of them are "essential to my gaming experience."

I do miss being able to kill whomever whenever as long as you were capable of doing so.

I'd even like to see a return of the "
With this character's death, the thread of prophecy is severed.
Restore a saved game to restore the weave of fate,
or persist in the doomed world you have created." message as well.

I was so sure when I joined the guild that I would eventually have the power to end the whole Black-Briar thing and have the guild stand on its own, without those corrupt losers with the Jarl in their pockets. Still wish the questline could've headed in that direction.

Yeah, I was thinking about this yesterday. I'd like to be able to take down the Thieves Guild too. Sort of like that Forsworn related quest in Markarth, but longer.

It's not really in my roleplay to destroy something like the theives guild, but with all the talk in the city It is suprising it wasn't an optional thing. Either they dislike them, hate them, or stuck in a connection to them. Anyone outside of the Theives guild would probably not be that bothered if they were killed off, some would even cheer for it.

But it is a pattern i'm seeing there is definitely abit more content out there for the "bad" guys, than the "good" guys, since most of the "good" guys, is just the neutral stuff anything.
There is very little stuff a "bad" guy won't consider doing. However there is a fair few things, a "good" guy would consider not doing, leaving them excluded from quest potential.

With their apparently being a potential to take down the DB, they could of done the same with the theives guild.

Agreed! This really frustrated me. I thought to infiltrate them, and once I'd gotten in, take them down. But obviously, couldn't do it.

I think the most logical solution would be to allow killing essential NPCs, but advising that the particular quest line would be closed off. The only one they might prevent that with would be the Main Quest.

As it stands, I've bought a house in Riften, planning to help clean up the town. Instead all I've done is piss the guild off, and have to worry about them breaking in and stealing my stuff when I'm not in town!

It's possible with the dark brotherhood. Why not thieves guild?

Well, the thieves guild is a very small organisation that is doing terrible in Skyrim and if you simply leave them in their misery, they won't ever go grand and huge. Just a small bunch of pick-pockets and burglars as long as you don't join them.

Ha! Its great im not the only one who wants to kill the theives! Im playing a good guy to. I remember in oblivion that the theives guild were at least stealing to help their fellow beggars kind of like robin hood stealing from the rich to give to the poor but in skyrim they have an arrangement with those damn rich guys the black briars to fleese every one of the honest people who work hard. And all this so they can sit around and drink beer and be nasty to people! Its so frustrating for the stereotypical hero type character player like me!

You can go kick their asses at the Ragged Flagon just to make sure they stay in line haha.

I dunno, I was at least happy that you could destroy the DB. I can live with that.
