I want the old two-piece clothing back!

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 3:25 pm

The simple 4-piece clothing/armor system Bethesda has now is less resource-intensive on computer hardware and the simplicity is nice, but I think I prefered the more customizable clothing and armor system of Oblivion and especially Morrowind. Makes the game feel even more like a hardcoe pen-and-paper-to-CRPG game. :-)

EDIT: By the way, the whole "this shirt doesn't fit with these pants, so meld the appropriate pieces together" argument is dumb. That's the way it works in real life: you have to match your clothing smartly if you want it to look nice, fit right, or otherwise do its job. Should they also start manufacturing jumpsuits for everyone in real life just to make sure some idiot doesn't wear sweat pants with his suit coat?

I definitely miss it. There seems to be just a general lack of believable variety. Assuming the lines we were fed about "Rendering time", I get why they did it, but still. This hurts more for Clothing than armor though. The essentially halved the variety of outfits in the game.

Ability to enchant various layers of clothing aside, I don't really care for the clothing system that much. Whether they keep this system or not makes little difference to this one.

Textures looking better and showing as they should is a lot better than mismatched armor in my book. They made it this way for a reason.
I'm all for that, but the customization downsize should be compensated. Give me an armor that is leather chest/cloth pants looking. More variety.

I can't help but laugh at how people think the 1 piece jump suits are the reasons Skyrim plays smoothly and not ENGINE ADVANCEMENTS BETTER THAN A GAME 5 YEARS AGO.

yes indeed, the clouds, the sky, the draw distance, the smooth running is ALL there because we have one piece suits

yes

kk.

Nevermind that they did some engine optimizations and that this is obviously 5 years over the course of FO3-Skyrim that some tweaks and changes were made, no no its all thanks to one piece clothing and reduced armor slots, indeed.

That was a nice laugh.

Well, they do get a lot more characters on screen without any real issues. Fort battles and the like. I'm not sure if the price was really worth it though, most of the "Epic battles" Still feel too small to suspend disbelief through. Lack of variety was a pretty heavy price to pay for some barely passable "Fort Assaults". That is to say nothing about the awkwardly small "War for Whiterun".

Not in Skyrim, that's a done deal.

You will get it in TES VI when the new generation of consoles is released.

Elder Scrolls Fans: Give them everything they want and suddenly they want something else that never seemed to matter before.

fact of the matter is we want something different and the group wanting something new is always the vocal one. so... I'm assuming that none of you complained about it before and ar ejust now changing your minds?

and this applies to all videogames and other things... so yeah...

I don't really miss two-pieced clothing even though I liked wearing different kinds of pants with cuirass/armor in previous TES games. In Skyrim I've my ragged trousers (and with mods more clothing options).

I miss Morrowind's drag and drop inventory system though. It was great on PC.

This. The consoles are old and very memory limited.

I don't miss 2 peice clothing either.
I just don't like leaving naked dead corpses around feels kind of disrespectful, strip armor off someone then I look at them laying there and wish I could at least put their pants back on.

Unfortunately this is one of those features that got cut and cut and stripped until there was nothing left.
From the 20+ apparel slots of Daggerfall to a measely 7.
You cant even wear clothes under armour anymore, not that I would want to, because Skyrim's clothes are very much ugly.
There isnt even much distinction between regular, expensive, extravagant or exquisite they are all more or less the same drab.

Extremely dissapointing, but I suppose it fits the trend of removing any and all things RPG from the series.

I don't really miss mismatched armor suits, either. Most people don't know why Bethesda implemented this idea in the first place. Pete sent a tweet last summer explaining why: it allows the game engine to focus on other things without slow-down or crashing (especially for consoles, of course). It allows NPC's and monsters to be seen on-screen from a greater distance. It allows better details far away, like clouds rolling way up in the mountains and stuff. A greater number of NPCs can be on-screen, etc.

Remember in Oblivion how structures and enemies would sometimes just pop on screen? If I had a choice between being able to see a bear from a quarter-mile away, or mismatched armor suits, I'm choosing to see the bear from a greater distance.
.

Enemies did never pop up on screen for me in Oblivion, +500 h played (summoned creatures don't count :))
Main reason was probably to reduce the numbers of items enemies equipped so consoles with 256 MB ram could handle it as you say, however it worked well in Oblivion and I say it's not more variation on enemy outfits anyway. probably less as you could make four combination with just two tops and bottoms.

I miss it, made it more interesting to equip my character.

Funnily enough, Skyrims game engine fails, and I often have objects that disappear while I'm looking at them. most of them are the scenery items in burial crpts, (i.e the items you can't pick up) like Urns and so on, but occasionally I'll be looking at a table full of food only to have it all disappear in front of my very eyes.
Bizarrely, this never happens for actors.

Actually the game engine does allow for many slots expansions, Bethesda just chooses to release with only limited few for balance reasons.

I have mods that gives me capes, earrings and more, all on different slots. I'm actually wearing 10 different enchanted items concurrently and that is far too balanced in vanilla.

As a comparison, Oblivion has more slots in vanilla but mods have a problem extending it beyond another one or two more.

Im jealous :(

Still, the balance issue does not fly.
For one, they dont seem to have been to bothered with balance in any other part of the game, such as the crafting skills.
Secondly, a game with 20+ apparel slots such as Daggerfall had 'balance' just fine.

For me, there is no reason for the removal of customisation except the fact that Bethesda is not interested in making RPG's anymore, and in your average hack n slash these things do not matter.

Well, judging from the magic system in Skyrim, magic itself is in decline on Nirn. Therefore wearing two enchanted items so close to eachother at this time would cause the magical energies to interfere with eachother and cause unintended side-effects.

It is for your safety! :P

No, that is absolutely not true.
First of all, magic cannot decline on Tamriel, its source is the sun.
Secondly, not only in lore but also the NPC's in Skyrim do many things that we used to be able to, but can no longer such as teleportation and spellmaking.

Its just the trend of removing options that is to blame for this, and nothing else.

Yeah, you're right, my mistake. Enemies don't, but Ayelid ruins and other such structures do. Enemies can't be seen from nearly as great a distance in Oblivion as they can be in Skyrim, though.

It would be a nice little touch but that's all it would be.

This doesn't bother me in the slightest.
