Weapon realism

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:47 am

Well with all the talk and debate on dual wielding and knockback I figured I would bring up a point of gun realism that especially concerns me.

Most notably, I would like to know if guns will be realistic in these ways:

1. Loading
2. Reloading
3. Reloading on weapon switch
4. Shooting through walls

Let me elaborate. When you fire your gun empty, you need to reload it. Many guns do this in different ways. However, in the case of semi-automatic handguns and fully or semi-automatic sub-machine guns or assualt rifles, when you fire them empty you have to take out the spent magazine, put in a fresh one and then action it. However, if you fire a gun and do not fire it empty then choose to manually reload it, all you need to do is put in the fresh mag, and you don't need to action the weapon. Also, when switching weapons, there is no need to action the weapon once you switch to it. Many games do this and it annoys the crap out of me. Just because you switch to a new weapon, doesn't mean you need to action the weapon. To be honest I forget if Fallout does this or not, its been awhile since I last played. However I'm hoping they will make the game as realistic as possible, because having to action the weapon just because you pulled it out, or having to action it when you manually reload (if you don't fire it dry) may sound cool but that is not how its done in real life, and just takes up time you could be using to kill the deathclaw that is trying to eat your face.

I would also like to see realistic physics and damage thresholds. More specifically, the ability to fire through walls and other objects that cannot withstand a bullet. The ability to be able to shoot through thin walls, car doors or other weak objects would be nice. Although in a world as graphically intense and expansive as Fallout I understand if this cannot be done, so no big deal.

Any word on how this is gonna be in NV?

if by action you mean load a bullet from the clip to the barrel before being able to shoot then i would think having that in would be more realistic. and im sure one of the different bullet types will make it able to shoot through some walls but doing so would waste bullets and i think alot of people wouldnt like it because its supposed to be a survival game and wasting bullets wont fly with most people

Thing is though to be accurate to real life with pistols the last shot fire the slide would be locked all the way back. You slide a magazine in (not clip) the bottom of the pistol once its in you pull a slide lever down on the side to release the slide. The slide slides forward chambering the first round and its ready to go.

Personally I say screw that because that would be extra animation to do not to mention it doesnt really change the story. Just like the graphics doesnt change the story.

In Fallout 3, if you fire your gun, switch to a new gun(without reloading) then switch back, the mag would be magically full. This might have been some glitch, but it works like that with the sniper rifle for sure. I hope they don't have that same glitch in new vegas.

I wish... but it won't happen in this title.

That never happened with me unless you shoot every bullet outta the magazine then switch to another then switch back but that really isn't that bigga deal with me as it's faster to just reload so it isn't THAT exploitable.

The reload speeds should be extended in my opinion, this is the Fallout 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxzrahUUTi8.

Yea I know how it works, and to be honest it really doesn't have to be that real. What most concerns me is in some games when you switch weapons it actions the weapon once you bring it out. Which if there is already bullets in it....it would be unnecessary. Like in movies when someone wants to show a guy that they mean business, they walk up to them with a gun and action it, making that satisfying "chk..chk" sound (shotgun) which is silly. There is no point to doing that every time you switch to a new weapon. I can't remember if Fallout did this or not.

What I'm getting at is not true realism, because this isn't a simulation game. What I mean is I hope there isn't alot of unnecessary time and motion wasted actioning weapons like in the movies when there's no point to doing so.

I'm finding it hard to clarify the point I'm trying to make here, I know those of you who have used guns before know what I'm talking about though.

Calling the piece that holds the pistols bullets a Magazine or Clip, doesn't matter. They're the same thing pistol wise.

That might be a bit harsh, at least he's not asking for 100 obscure weapons from modern times.

Little details about reloading animations don't bug me too much, but I do hate when bullets won't pass through tissue paper.

Oh, and I agree about quick-drawing a weapon without having to [action] it. (hahah stupid filter)

If I'm creeping through a dark tunnel full of feral ghouls, safe to say all my hardware should have a round chambered, ready to go. :gun:

That half-second when my assault-rifle goes click and I swap for my shotgun, life and death!

I believe I called it a "magazine" and referred to it once as a"mag" which is just a short version.

I don't think I called it a "clip" but even if I did, it's the same thing.

Also when I say "actioning" a gun, to "action" a weapon is the correct term for loading a round into the firing chamber, ie - pulling back the slide on a handgun, sliding the pump forward on a pump shotgun, etc.

You know what I mean.... <_<

Technically their not. To be specific a magazine is a cartridge container of a gun. What you call a clip for a pistol is the cartridge container of that gun so it is a magazine.

A clip on the other hand for example my M1891/30 rifle has what is called Stripper clips or just clips. This is a true clip it holds 5 bullets that you place into a receiver atop the rifle and you press the 5 cartridges to transfer them from the "clip" to the magazine of the rifle. So a clip and a magazine are two different things, its just that people have gotten so used to calling anything detachable a clip that they think it is correct when in fact technically their all magazines.

To put it bluntly and specific, clips are how cartridges come when you unbox them, you then use the clips of cartridges to then load up the magazines of your weapon be it a pistol or rifle with detachable magazines or a rifle like mine with a intregal magazine. The spamcan (a metal can of 440 rounds) that I get comes with every 5 cartridges prefixed to a stripper clip or clip. There are 4 clips per paper wraping (20 cartridges).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB5HAV_3dPQ

Point is though calling magazines clips does bother people that deal with guns because its not the correct terminology. Its like kids pronouncing N.O.S. as NAWZ when its an acryonym for the Nitrous Oxide System company and their ads say N - O - S is their name not NAWZ as the kidiots call it.

Its not really a big deal but it does upset some people to hear things mislabeled.

Roompert I didnt do the (not a clip) part to mean you were wrong. I put it in because clips and magazines are two different things and it gets old to see others call magazines clips. I was putting it there for other people to see with the hopes that the correct terminology would catch on. I guess thats just wishful thinking since these firstperson shooters got kids saying clips so much that they think magazines are clips.

If New Vegas was meant to be realistic it would stop people from "topping off" clips instead of actually reloading. In other words, leftover bullets from an old clip would be discarded instead of magically transferred back into your ammo reserve. It's especially laughable when this happens with weapons like the Flamer- do they really expect the player character to sit down in the middle of battle, empty out all the fuel from one tank, dump it into his backpack and then load in another tank? Just isn't going to happen.

I dont know if theres anyone that doesnt know that theres hardcoe mode that requires sleep/food/water to survive.

I think its a very interesting twist and I will probably try the hardcoe mode after my initial playthrough personally.

As far as realisim for weapons I do agree with the previous posts that weapons shouldnt auto load after holstering them so you unholster a fully loaded weapon. Like wise I also dont think a weapon needs to be armed every time you unholster it. This is the wasteland isnt it why not leave the gun hot all the time and give us a key option to disarm the firearm when were in a "city" or settlement.

There's a fine line between adding the need to eat, sleep, and drink and overcomplicating the combat mechanics for the sake of video game realism.

What really annoyed me in FO3 is that if I emptied a full clip on someone, after reloading, I noticed my character, even after completing all steps to load the round into the chamber, would take the magazine out AGAIN, look at the magazine, and put it back in a second time for no reason at all. That is five seconds that I could have used in the combat but instead lost health and time. I noticed it especially with the shotgun.

I believe that's supposed to be a simulated weapons jam, or a misload.

keep your guns patched up, bro.

though that said, i really didn't like how that was handled. i really hope Obsidian actually managed to fix jamming-while-firing - it worked perfectly for everything but automatic weapons and really didn't seem like it would require all that much effort to fix.

Right, because if someone asks for more realism in combat in the game, it automatically means they want it to be like Call of Duty, even if they never once mentioned Call of Duty, and for all you know they might not even play it. Of course, it makes perfect sense.

And also, Call of Duty has guns too, that means Obsidian needs to take guns out of the game, after all, we can't have something from Call of Duty in Fallout, can we?

What really annoyed me in FO3 is that if I emptied a full clip on someone, after reloading, I noticed my character, even after completing all steps to load the round into the chamber, would take the magazine out AGAIN, look at the magazine, and put it back in a second time for no reason at all. That's because the gun got jammed, it can sometimes happen if your gun is in poor condition, so if you want to avoid that, you need to maintain your weapons better.

There's a fine line between adding the need to eat, sleep, and drink and overcomplicating the combat mechanics for the sake of video game realism.

Not really, I'd say both are pretty much the same in that both make the game annoying and tedious for the sake of a bit of added realism, fortunately, needing to eat and drink is only present in hardcoe mode, so those who want that sort of unnecessary realism can have it, while it's not forced on those who don't. And there's also a fine line between adding fun details to combat mechanics and overcomplicating them, where that line is, though, may vary depending on who you ask.

But in any case, I wouldn't object to bullet penetration in the game, it's not something important, and probably would have limited potential application if it was added as you'd still need to know where enemies are to shoot at them through cover, which might not always be easy, and it might not always be clear what materials can be penetrated, still, I would not complain if it was added. Trying to make the reloading realistic though just seems like more detail than the game really needs.

This. The laser weaponry in FO3 has recoil, for christ's sake! Recoil!
Seeing the laser is actually quite realistic, it's powerful enough to ionise the air, but recoil? Recoil! Lasers!

I'm having real trouble not losing my [censored] and going off the wall when you guys say stuff like this.

What I'm getting at is not "over complicating things for the sake of realism." I'm talking about simplifying things for the sake of smoother gameplay/realism. Just because you pull out a weapon, doesn't mean you need to action it. There is already bullets in the chamber.Games actually overcomplicated things by making them go through the motions of actioning it at inappropriate times because 1. it sounds and looks badass and 2. because movies have taught everyone that that is how guns work.

Go out, buy a gun, fire a couple mags worth of ammo through it, and you'll know what I mean.

Ever play Area 51? When you cycle through the weapons it makes you action every one, even though it's fully loaded. That's what I'm talking about. It's not realistic, its unnecessary, and eliminating it will simplify things and make switching weapons and loading weapons faster. It doesn't need to be perfectly realistic, I'm just saying we don't need to see the character action the weapon and make the "chk, chk" sound every single time you reload or switch weapons.

Also, I don't even know if Fallout 3 was an offender of this whole thing or not. Like I said, I haven't played in awhile. I'm surprised no one chimed in yet to confirm or deny this.

Also, if you've never fired a weapon in your life, or seen one fired, or have no idea how firearms work outside of a video game, then please don't even put in your two cents, cuz its Canadian money. Which doesn't count. I think only one or two people even fully understood what I was getting at so far, so I'm fully done discussing this and I'll leave it to you guys to discuss how "real" an rpg should be, which by the way, was not the point of the thread.
