Werewolf: Brain Damage - Sign Up

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 3:59 pm

Preface: This is the sign-up thread for the forum murder mystery game, Werewolf. The game will begin in exactly 7 days and 8 hours from the time this signup was posted.

Werewolf: Brain Damage

Hello and welcome to Werewolf, a competitive forum murder-mystery! If you enjoy problem solving, persuasion, intrigue and deception, Werewolf may be the game for you.

In Werewolf, several players are randomly (and secretly) selected as "wolves", while the rest of the players are known simply as "innocents". Each night the wolves claim another innocent life, while it is the job of the innocents to work together to root out and execute each wolf before the innocents are overcome. The wolves are vastly outnumbered, and the innocents need only a majority vote to execute a wolf. But when anybody could be a wolf, the problem is deciding who can be trusted.

If you are interested in participating in the game, read the rules below and create a character for yourself (as your voice in the game), and you're ready to play. Good luck, and enjoy the game!

Setting

Congratulations! You have been randomly selected by the benevolent World Government to take part in a potentially groundbreaking experiment, conducted in the mysterious Atom Heart Military Research Facility. Your safety has been absolutely assured (supported by the intense media attention placed on the Facility), and it is rumoured that experimental participants are excellently paid for their work. This is, you are well aware, the opportunity of a lifetime.

You will be investigating the revolutionary field of Neurochemical Manipulation, and while conspiracy theorists rattle off the dangers and unethical implications of the use of such untested technology, independent scientists assure the population that nothing can possibly go amiss. Amongst the rapidly-swelling hailstorm of controversy, one thing is agreed upon by all.

Nobody can deny that the experiment will prove life-changing.

Preparation

No prior experienced is needed to participate in a game of Werewolf - all that is required is a little spare time over the next 10 days. In order to participate, you will need to fill out the character form below. These player characters form the characters and suspect pool of the game, and your character will be your own voice (or avatar) in the game. Note that you do not have to roleplay (pretend to be) your character throughout the game, unless you wish to.

Name: Nicknames may be recorded along with names given to participants at birth. Remember, we are your friends here at the Atom Heart Military Research Facility!
Age: The Atom Heart Management Team is regretful to announce that after several tragic experiments into widely-rumoured "African Super-Babies", all participants must be over the age of 13.
Appearance: Briefly describe the participant's general appearance.
Occupation: Unemployment, while despicable, is a viable option for participants.
General Personality: How does the participant usually act, and why? How do they view the world? How is the participant viewed by others? How does the participant react to pressure, and to other difficult situations?
Beliefs: How does the participant feel about major issues? In particular, what are their political and spiritual views?
Strengths: Specific skills, abilities and things the participant does well. Be positive; we require a minimum of 4 characteristics to proceed with the experiment!
Weaknesses: Failings, fears and inadequacies, and things you feel that you struggle with. Minimum of 4 characteristics, to foster dedicated self-improvement.
History: Very briefly, explain the participant's life before being randomly chosen to transform the face of modern science.

Rules of the Game

Werewolf is played out in 22 hour periods known as days. Each day begins with a write-up, a narrative piece of writing explaining the events of the previous day as well as (usually) a murder. Players must use the evidence within this piece in order to figure out who among them are "wolves" (the murderers), while the wolves themselves must attempt to shift suspicion onto other players and remain alive. During each day each player may vote for a single player to be executed, while the wolves may (secretly) send me the name of a player they wish to target for murder. At the end of this 22 hour period the day ends and the votes are tallied. Two hours later the following write-up is posted, detailing the execution of the player with the most votes, the murder by the wolves, and all other events of the day, and the cycle continues until either all wolves are eliminated, or there are more wolves than innocents. However, on every third day, the wolves will be allowed to convert an innocent player to their ranks (the player becomes a wolf) instead of murdering somebody. Wolves may communicate freely amongst themselves.

If possible you should try to actively participate every day; a player who is completely inactive for three consecutive days or four days total will be killed off in the interests of moving the game forwards.

In addition, players will receive "points" throughout the game, which may be spent in order to purchase abilities and powers to aid that player's team. Points for the innocents may be received by correctly voting for wolves (if the wolf is not killed, ALL points for prior votes will be awarded after the wolf's death), and by receiving them from Judges (again, see below). Points for the wolves may be received by killing Judges, converting innocents, and receiving them from Judges.

A number of abilities may be purchased using these points:

Spoiler
Setting Vote: 1 Point. [Wolves and Innocents.] Allows the player to place a vote which will determine which of several "settings" the game will progress to in the next day. Multiple votes may be purchased.
Frame: 2 Points. [Wolves]. May be used on an innocent who, if investigated, will appear to be a wolf.
Communication Channel: 2 Points. [Wolves and Innocents.] Opens up a permanent channel of communication between two players.
Assassinate: 2 Points. [Wolves.] May be used on a player targeted for murder. If that player is a Judge, protection is bypassed. Otherwise, the murder fails.
Investigate: 3 Points. [Innocent.]. May be used to determine whether or not a player is a wolf.
Scent Tracking: 3 Points. [Wolves.] May be used on any player to reveal whether or not they are a Judge.
Protect: 3 Points. [Innocent]. May be used on any other player (so NOT the person who purchased the ability) to protect that player for one night from murder by the wolves.
Disappear: 4 Points. [Innocent]. May be used to protect oneself against being murdered by wolves for one night.
Bypass Protection: 5 Points [Wolves]. May be used to bypass the protection of any player.

Players may gift points to one another at any time. The wolf team shares all points.

Roles

At the beginning of the game, each player will privately receive one of the following roles.

Innocent
The innocents make up the majority of players in the game, and have no special powers. Each day the innocents may case a single execution vote, and may spend points to gain special abilities. The innocents are not aware of the roles of any other players in the game.

Judge
A Judge is special kind of innocent, with the ability to hand out Points to other players. During the day each Judge will be able to PM me with the name of a player, who will receive an additional point at the end of the day.

Archwolf
The leader of the wolves, the Archwolf is simply the most senior wolf of the pack. The Archwolf is responsible for sending me kill and conversion targets, and for notifying me of how wolf Points will be spent. When the Archwolf dies, a regular wolf will be chosen to take its place. The entire wolf team may communicate freely amongst itself via PM.

Wolf
The assistants to the Archwolf, the wolves have no special powers except for the ability to communicate with all other Wolves in the game, and with the Archwolf.

Posting

In order to make the game smoother and easier for everybody concerned, there is a format for posting in the Werewolf thread that we request you follow. Simply type and underline your character's name at the top of each post, bold and redden your votes and questions to the host, italicize actions performed by your character and precede out-of-character posts with "OOC". This format is demonstrated below:

Freddy

This has been an interesting day, but based on the tiny size of the footprints I suggest that we should execute Gary Coleman.

Sits down quietly in a corner to contemplate.

OOC: How long until voting ends? I'm going to be away for the next day, sorry about that.

Posting

To sign up, just post your character in this thread. If you don't want to post your character now but want to participate, just let me know in the thread and I'll reserve you a spot.

Reserved. I, for one, think the whole points thing is a little too complex, but we'll see how it goes.

In. May I request that we switch off of bold-and-white to something new given the new forum skin? I'm using the one without the background image and the white doesn't show.

Did we try red before? Was there a reason we stopped using it?

Sure, I'll give red a go in the sign-up as suggested by Bang.

Can you give a few more details on how the point system works?

Certainly. From an innocent perspective: each time you correctly vote for a wolf, I'll take note of it (without informing you). When that particular wolf is finally executed, you will receive one point for each time you voted for that wolf. Additionally, each Judge may award one point to each player per day. You can then use those points to purchase abilities (listed in the signup) by PM'ing me.

From a wolf perspective: You will not receive points through voting, however every time a judge dies you will receive a point, and whenever you convert an innocent you will receive all of the points that player has on them.

The rules are slightly experimental and a little more complex than usual, so if a majority players would prefer a more traditional role system, then I'm completely happy to alter the ruleset.

Is it public or in secret via PM?

Are players allowed to ask/beg for points if he has none?

Setting Vote: 1 Point. [Wolves and Innocents.] Allows the player to place a vote which will determine which of several "settings" the game will progress to in the next day. Multiple votes may be purchased.

What happened in the rare and unlikely event that none of the Innocents have points?

What happened if no one votes for a setting?

Secret, via PM to me.

Sure, if they want to.

What happened in the rare and unlikely event that none of the Innocents have points?
What happened if no one votes for a setting?

If nobody at all decides to vote, I'll just randomize which of the locations is selected.

I'll reserve a spot. I've always been curious about trying this game out. If I get given a role that requires communicating with other players (such as a wolf), how much space would you say I need in my inbox? Obviously that would depend on the number of wolves chosen, but if you could give a rough estimate I'd appreciate it. I'm always teetering on the edge of a full inbox so I'd have to empty it a bit to participate.

Name: Luke "Stunner" Langevin
Age: 19
Appearance: Beautiful. Chiseled features, piercing blue eyes, a muscular build, a slight stubble, and an entrancing glow. Wearing a tight gray long-sleeved t-shirt, blue jeans, sneakers.
Occupation: Model
General Personality: Overwhelmingly positive, unable to conceive of adversity; persuasive, and unwilling to do things himself; viewed as the epitome of charisma; reacts to pressure and difficulty by acting extra charming. This has never failed him.
Beliefs: Believes the world is a warm, wonderful place; lacks any sense of existential displacement, curiosity about worlds beyond this, or interest in anyone else's problems (because no one has problems, obviously).
Strengths: Cheerful; charismatic; patient; knows how to deliver the perfect compliment.
Weaknesses: Unable to distinguish right and wrong or true and false due to a complete lack of negative reinforcement in his life. Lies pathologically to women, in particular. Barely literate. Fearful of aging.
History: When Luke emerged from the womb, the doctor was so stunned by the beauty of the baby's piercing eyes that he passed out and left the mother to bleed out and die. Luke's father blamed the baby, but Luke was too beautiful to hate. He grew up and skated through school on teacher adoration, earning admission to a top-notch university, where he spent a semester before getting tapped into male modeling.

You need one conversation with me, and one for each wolf. It's unlikely that there will ever be more than 5 wolves, so 5 spaces in your inbox should be plenty for the game. :)

It's not really 'too wild', but some of the details are contradictory (bad at basic calculation, but can mentally provide π?) and more importantly, things like "unicornaphobia" and "good at drawing protest banners" aren't really useful as evidence. Those sorts of things are fine, but there needs to be less specific and more evidence-useful traits in there as the basis of your character.
