What are you reading right now?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:53 pm

Currently The Vampire Lestat, and then I might continue the Count of Monte Cristo.

I'm about halfway through the Count of Monte Cristo. I started it quite a while ago then school started to rule my time, so when I get back to it I'm probably going to restart it.
I am also halfway through the Complete Sherlock Holmes, but since thats just a compilation of 4 novels and 54 short stories, I can stop after a short story for a while and not have to worry about forgetting any story.
I also have, but not started yet (they're all graphic novels):
Batman: War Drums
Batman: War Games Act 1: Outbreak
Batman: War Games Act 2: Tides
Batman: War Games Act 3: Endgame
Batman: War Crimes
Has anybody read Dan Brown's new book Lost Symbol?

I have it qued up because my girlfriend recommended it. Any thoughts?

I'm waiting for my dad to get it, who in turn, is waiting for it to come out in paperback. And with my huge list above, I don't know when I would get around to reading it, but it'll probably be directly after those.

I'm reading an omnibus called "The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" which as you may have already guessed, contains the entire Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. I'm currently on Life, the Universe, and Everything it's a pretty good read but so far my favorite has been The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

Dracula the Undead, by Dacre Stoker and Ian Holt.

I've read 1/5 of it and it is ok so far, not a great book tho. The author seemed to want to honor his ancestor and included Bram Stoker into the book, telling tales of his desperate attempt to publish the book Dracula. Other than that, it sometimes bugs me the way he made
Spoiler
Jonathan Harker a drunkard who didn't work well in bed with his wife after 20 years since Dracula's demise, and that he cheated her multiple times doesn't sound Jonathan to me at all.

I am reading Crossing the Water by Sylvia Plath and book of plays by Jean-Paul Sartre (No Exit, The Flies, something else...). I don't really read plays and I wanted to get a book called Nausea instead but the library catalog lied to me cuz it was nowhere to be found on the shelf :< I returned Burroughs's Naked Lunch the same day. I got through only about a third of that though, I just couldn't get into it. I read these books because I have nothing else to do.

Nabokov's Lolita

That's one of my favorites ^_^ Humbert Humbert is so depraved but you can't help liking him anyway.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail.

"Campaign Trail" had a lot of good lines, sadly you had to read through thousands of letters to get to them...

Just finished Terry Pratchett's Unseen Academicals, its probably one of the best of his out of the ones I've read.

I now plan to read a crapload of out of copyright books off the internet, some Jules Verne and HG Wells. Though I'm starting with Huxley's Brave New World.

I'm considering rereading The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas for book club, but I don't want to deprive others of the copy at the library. Perhaps I can find one at the uni library instead.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez's short stories. He really ought to stick with his novel-length works, although there are one or two gems here.

The last part of Ravenor - The Omnibus, called Ravenor Rogue, by Dan Abnett. Will probably be reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman after I've finished it.
I'm also reading Aliens. Just finished the second omnibus, and will probably get the third tomorrow.

Currently re-reading http://www.amazon.com/Uppity-Women-Ancient-Times-Vicki/dp/1567312497/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1267145581&sr=8-1. I highly recommend reading this book. You can read a few of the pages on Amazon. Nice easy reading, and really brings the ancient world's people to life in a way that no other history book or documentary has done. Don't expect a super serious dry boring read; this is fun, informative, and really quite an eye-opener about women's roles and contributions in the ancient world, and just how people lived way back in the B.C. days.

Nabokov's Lolita

SUCH a good book. At the end, I just felt so bad for Humbert Humbert, despite what he is.

I keep trying to read Moby dike (I'm about half way through, and have been since November).

I'm sick of reading about what people thought about Whales way back when. I wanted to read a story about the hunt for a big whale, not to learn the anatomy of every species going, and how to cook the bastards.
