What gender is the Courier

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 8:39 am

Do you mean retconned? If so, how is Chosen being male a retcon?

Thanks tipo on my part.

Edit: I agree with Apples, I mean, it's never been explicitly stated WHAT the Chosen Ones six was. It's always been implied to be male, but never canonly stated as either or.

No I can agree with both of you, I was going on a hunch.. a large one but listen to Bruce Isaacs talking of the new Mr Bishop after he "plowed" the mans daughter.
The Bishop is so strongly implied at being the tribal chosen ones son it's as close to confirmation.
Unless there is another reference of a female chosen ones daughter in a future game / dlc, then the only reference to the CO is being male.

It may not be a full retcon or much of a one even, but going from gender neutral past events to implied male protagonist is a change.

Though it is true that they have always been canonically male, it doesn't mean it can't change. It's not as though it's essential to Fallout, otherwise a female option probably wouldn't exist. Also, you wouldn't have to play as a woman, it's just that the courier that goes down in Fallout history won't be yours. I'll bet that not all of your decisions will be congruent with the canon courier anyway. I however understand wanting the canon courier to be male because you can identify more with a male character as a male, but I just don't understand raging about it like you said you would.

I wouldnt really rage about that was pretty much a exaggeration. But i wouldnt be as happy.

I don't believe the female Chosen can get pregnant, the Bishop child is the offspring of male Chosen and either the old Mr. Bishop's daughter or his wife.

And I never really stated my stance on the subject. I don't care what gender the Courier ends up being. :D

There is that, given that by all reason the majority of players are men.
( I know not everyman plays as a man on every build however, or every woman plays a female PC all the time.)
That male hero is the default, until it's specifically stated otherwise, due to how the game is set up and marketed.

@ Looloo. forgive me I'm in a tipo.. unable to write clear posts mood at the moment.
I Meant that unless there is a direct and outright statement in NV, DLC or a future game of a female CO or a ( fictional ) descendant, then the only reference is of a male CO in game / lore.
Not that you could have a child as a female CO during FO2.

Sorry for having to clarify again my poor phrasing.

That doesn't amount to much, really. The Mr. Bishop mentioned in NV is obviously a nod to that particular ending, but you'll notice that every mention of the Chosen One in the game was gender neutral (tribal, friend etc). One could just as easily argue that the current Mr. Bishop is somebody else's son.

I consider the Chosen One male so it doesn't matter to me either way, but I don't think we should be acting like the character has an official canon gender when Obsidian went out of their way to avoid calling the character either a he or a she in the game. There's nothing saying that the Mr. Bishop mentioned in New Vegas isn't the son of some other wandering mercenary who impregnated one of the Bishop women... lord knows it's possible considering how both of them behaved in Fallout 2.

As for the Courier, I agree with the folks who say that he or she is whoever the player wants them to be.

I'd laugh if the courier was a robot.

Would explain Victor's interest just a little bit.

There is no courier, only Zul.

On a serious note, I would prefer all references to be gender neutral. The "wasteland wanderers" are supposed to be like mythical heroes that people like to tell stories about. It would be really awesome if canon had both a male and a female running around saving the wastes at the same time, but the stories get jumbled up over the years so that everyone thinks there was only 1.

Isn't it obvious? The heros of Fallout are all one being. That's right you guessed it, they are all the evil alien lord Xenu come down to Earth to gather recruits to kill with hydrogen bombs on the Pre-War volcanoes!

I'M ON TO YOU HEROS OF FALLOUT! :stare:
