No seriously though. After playing New Vegas, I realize the Lone Wanderer was the most boring protagonist ever. His appearance, his dialog, his story, his alignment. Everything about him.
The Lone Wanderer's appearance basically looks like they just decided that the canon LW should just have short brown hair, because most potential gamers (or most men in general) have short brown hair. After making sure they got the short brown hair, they just said "**** it" and went on their lunch break, leaving his face as generic as possible. The Courier? Dude has detail. He's got the suave hairstyle, he's decent-looking and his face, if you look at it, actually has this blocky-look to it. He definitely looks like someone who could take two bullets to the head because his forehead is huge and looks like a wall from the side angle.
Ok ok, you can choose from one of three dialog options, so there's no set personality for any of them, but can we at least agree that the Courier is capable of saying far more interesting things?
Some old fart tells you "You have to save my grandson!" and the Lone Wanderer just says "You can count on me, sir!" like some weird-ass Boy Scout cyborg that the Enclave built before the Great War to simulate all the stupid happy-go-lucky attitudes of the son from a 1950's American family. With the Courier, some dude is like "You better do as I say or there will be pain and suffering," and the Courier answers with a sarcastic "oh damn, that sounds uncomfortable. I'd wanna avoid that..." While the Lone Wanderer's speech options could always be categorized as the good answer, the neutral answer and the evil answer, the Courier often gets responses ranging from "What's going on" to "wtf was that? Do you always toss grenades at complete strangers?" to "Hmmmm, I think I better go." The Lone Wanderer's speech options were soooo generic; the Courier actually breaks out of the Good-Neutral-Evil scheme and simply offers various possible responses to a situation, not neccesarily ranging based on alignment but based on humor, calmness, anger etc. The most basic lines for the Courier ocassionally match the humor of some of the Lone Wanderer's "evil" or "neutral" speech options. You know, the ones you could NEVER USE because they'd piss off the NPC you were trying to make a deal with? That's another nice feature: the Courier being able to deliver a joke without getting shot for it. The ONLY time the LW consistently got quality responses was by giving sarcastic responses to Moira Brown.
The story of FO3 was like "there are bad menz and you're a good guy because your dad PRAISES JEBUS~~~ so you have to stop the bad peoplez." He's a goody-two-shoes boy scout. And even worse, he's flawless. The only flaw that the Lone Wanderer seems to have is that his luck svcks. Lost his love interest, lost his father, lost his mother, lost his home, lost half his brain, has to fight super mutants next to piles of exploding cars. But really, is bad luck even considered a character flaw? (But I guess you could say his Charisma svcks too, considering HIS DIALOG svckS) And what is his motivation in the game? He's a cry-baby daddy's boy that runs around saying "WAAAAAH WHERE'S MY DADDY." That brings me back to my last point about the LWs dialog, too: the basic dialog for the LW on his search for his dad was sometimes as lame as "Oh please tell me where he is! I miss him SO much!" Dude wtf you've only been away from him for three days. If I acted like that after my dad had been gone three days, I'm pretty sure my dad would disown me entirely, once he was done beating the [censored] out of me.
The story of New Vegas is like "wtf that ass just shot you. C'mon let's go kill that [censored]. Oh and check this out, we can kill this other guy and take over Vegas." How kick ass is that? The Courier is flawed. He's hungry for revenge, he will kill off at least one innocent person, and he may very well take Vegas for himself. (I have a theory as to why Independent Vegas will be canon but I'll save that for another time) The Courier actually has flaws and the events of the game even hint at a couple undeniable personality traits for him, all of which prevent him from being a goody-two-shoes who does everything right and can do no wrong, which is what makes a character interesting in the first place. More importantly, he's not hunting down his daddy as if he can't even walk on two legs without his help.
In short, screw you, Lone Wanderer!
