What happened to the Elder Scrolls community here?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 10:07 am

It's not enough, we need some sort of super moderator. The Elite who will be entrusted with forum kinds fate. We need the Space Marine Moderators, genetically engineered and given the most powerful weapons the God Emperor Todd can give his battle brothers. The deadly exterminbanus noobus. The ability to call down a tactical banning on everyone in a thread at the click of a button. Force Banhammers, able to apply three bans to one person at once. Stem the tide and keep them back.
A kajillion times this. :D

Forums, these forums never change. Since the announcement of Skyrim, theses forums have been trolled, flamed and plagued by pure stupidity. In the year 2011, after a month of stupidity , the forum could sustain its no longer an was plunged into banning hellfire and radiation. This forum, this forum never changes. Instead of then end as some predicted, it just began an new bloody chapter in this forum history as Fallout 4 was announced. Some where saved though, sheltered in old game forums and the CD. :P

Why should these boards be different than any other video game board? The Elder Scrolls series might be special to many around here, including me, but in the big picture it is just another game among many. Blasphemy, I know. :)

And, though I'm not some BGS board vet with the ten mile stare, I think this is a fairly good forum. I find most people are fairly helpful. Then again, I avoid troll threads unless I'm really bored.

Only thing I don't like is not being able to post topics of a political nature. But this a game board so the fair is light.

Its just because its a new game right now and little fan boys are all over it. Give it time and it will die down. Hang out here and in the Oblivion or Morrowind forums. Stay out of Skyrim forums for about 6months.

You also have to bear in mind Skyrim JUST came out, so you still have the 'shock and awe' crowd here. Give it some time and only the fans will have stuck around.

Yep pretty much. Same deal with Oblivion, same deal with Fallout 3 and New Vegas, same deal with Skyrim. Shame WET didn't get that kind of attention :P

My only complaint is that community discussion is much less active than it was back when I was in high school.

I have noticed this as of late, but then again there are only so many "What's your favourite game music/quotes/boss/character" and "how to get girls" or "how to usurp a guys girlfriend from him even though she will only ever see me as a friend but I'm sure she loves me" threads I can post in before I start to keep stock posts in a word document to copy and paste into them. I'm becoming a Community Discussion robot, and not the cool Japanese kind. The lame middle aged man playing with gadgets in his shed to make remote control cars into "robots" kind.

Now I just seem pessimistic. I've finally become to Skyrim what Morrowind was to Oblivion :P

Almost everything, except some funny post, goes dulled&dark , no pics, no animated :yucky:

All I can do here was just post , view and post or argue again (watched my word anyway)

But some topic stilled get my interests and that's just fair enough to me :tes:

Because little children get ahold of the game and an internet connection round about the same time they think they are the all ruling master of the universe, who can voice about anything trolly, nooby, stupid.
I don't go to the Skyrim section no mores :) :fallout:

I can already see Freddo charging the Skyrim forums, clad in Terminator armour and roaring at the top of his lungs: I shall fear no evil, for I AM FEAR INCARNATE!!

Only to fall at the clawed hands of the daemons of the twisting madness, the warped Chaos of Skyrim General :(

It lacks alot of what other forums have, true, but you also find that this forum is alot better off because of it. Back when there was image use, some people spammed porm here. Some words are filtered or censored and in truth, all those censored words arent required words for a well thought out post, you'll find this community is usually well mannered, jsut DON'T go and expect anything less than snobbery and elitism in the TES lore forum, and NEVER EVER EVER mention Fallout and Fallout 2 should be remade into a game like Fallout 3 in the Fallout 3 forum if you value your life.

What caused this? Was it the fact that Bethesda kept trying to attract a broader fanbase, which brought in the 'bad eggs' its fanbase from Morrowind and before never had

Yup, Elder Scrolls became a casual game series for every Brock out there. And also Bethesda's work doesn't hold up as comparatively well in today's age. There are a lot of amateur design elements in their work.

You might get away with that in the Fallout 3 forum, actually. But in Fallout Series Discussion you'd definitely get lynched. :D

I was a frequent here around 2003, when I was playing Morrowind. I'd come here and look for cool hints or helpers and everything about this community was great. None of the posters had egos and just about everyone was helpful and cheerful. I joined in 2005 and made sure to keep up the positive attitude and ensure this forum remained free from the whole "internet is full of trolls" stereotype that most forums fulfill.

Then Oblivion came out, and we got hundreds of new members who loved it. Most of us who thought Morrowind was better seemed to feel left behind a bit, but we (for the most part) didn't cause too many problems. There were a lot of Morrowind vs. Oblivion debates, but all in all we were still arguing which was better between two very good games. And for the most part, the nostalgia won. If you played Morrowind first, you liked it over Oblivion. If you played Oblivion first, you liked it over Morrowind.

The lead up to Skyrim was long and filled with intrigue, and this community was still proving to be arguably the best in the gaming industry. After release, however, it seems like it's become even worse than atrocious ones such as Call of Duty or Halo, or even FABLE.

Think so huh? CD was worse than all forums here combined..several occasions it was almost shut down. But it's ok for the other sections to assplode in chaos.

It's non-stop hating, complaining, trolling, bashing of people on the forums and Bethesda, and a complete 180% turn from the way it was before. Very few posters have anything positive to say and even less contribute and help solve issues and problems other people are having.

I had enough of Bethesda. I was always leaning towards not being on their side, but at the same time, I was not following the crowd of non sensical haters - I was trying to be reasonable, trying understand what the hell were they doing and why. But now, [censored] that. None of this makes any sense. Don't care about them, they can release as much [censored] up crap as they want. I've moved on. As for the community - it is what it is. They are tired of the [censored].
What caused this? Was it the fact that Bethesda kept trying to attract a broader fanbase, which brought in the 'bad eggs' its fanbase from Morrowind and before never had, or is it just that game fans are spoiled and expect too much now?

There is the half here that are spoiled from MMOs(or actually BURNED by them).

As several people have stated, you are right. The Skyrim forum is still a wild and untamed beast, give it a couple of months and we'll have it roped (and by we, I mean, of course, the moderators. So not me.) and under control. Until then, you'd be best to stay in the protectful area of the Community Discussion.

I just wished it would pick up a bit here :( Can't wait for the upswing to a more active place again. I haven't been as active as usual because there just aren't many exciting topics.

Trust me, forums become awful once a new game is released, and then it dies down. I've seen it happen with Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Skyrim, and the idiocy always slowly peters out after a while.

That said, the community is no longer what it once was.

The forums, and the games, got exponentially bigger. The percentage of fans who post on the boards has increased too, I'd imagine. There's more people, so the positive, thought out posts by long-time members tend to get lost in the flood of the rage of the floob.* Back in the day moderators could get things done quicker, Bethesda could afford to be more personal, and there was a sense of comradeship that encouraged one to treat this place as a community rather than a youtube comment thread. It'll die down once Skyrim settles in, when the problems are ironed out and the people who've come here only to whine leave. It will never be what it was in '03, but that's not something we can ever go back to.
