What's the deal with cannabalism?

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 10:52 am

Cannibalism fits the game world. In Fallout, it's all about survival and some people were desperate enough to go against the taboo of eating people. In Skyrim, it's all about cults in the setting that cannibalism takes place in. Some tribes eat people, in fact some tribes eat people and believe that it's the only way to truly destroy their souls. Namira worshipers are a bunch of cultists. It's part of their cultural beliefs.

Just like how Forsworn worship Hagraven and do human sacrifice, both of which would be considered taboo.

> Boiling it in hot water should do the trick, without burning the meat. Apparently it sterilises at 121 degree celcius.

Water boils at 100 degrees and becomes steam, so unless you have a pressure cooker (which is really unlikely in the case of the groups we're talking about) you aren't going to hit that.

Even if you could, prions aren't something you can sterilize effectively short of incineration (at which point you're eating ashes rather than meat) - it's the same reason why meat from cows that have had mad cow disease (variant CJD) can't simply be marketed as "cook thoroughly before eating".

It takes 18 minutes of steam at 132 C pressurized to 30-32 psi to kill prions like CJD.

Which is two atmospheres and you have to use a cleaning agent like bleach, and even then there's some evidence that it doesn't always work. Recommendations are to immerse utensils you want to use for 30 minutes to an hour. In any case, this obviously isn't something you can use on food.

There was cannibalism and cannibals in Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas and now in Skyrim? What's up with that?

I might get some hate for saying this, but:

Any meat tastes fantastic if cooked correctly.

That's what's up with that.

Pretty sure that's irrelevent to why cannibalism is used in games.

It's a game where you're meant to roleplay. If any meat is delicious when cooked correctly and is a source of nutrients...then it'd be more confusing as to why it WOULDN'T be in the games.

The same reason it is extremely rare in real life. Obviously.

And cannibalistic societies don't generally have access to the required tech to do it. (TES-wise, the dwemer might have developed that sort of thing, but I don't think they were given to cannibalism.)

Yeah but TES-wise, who needs technology when you got magic?
I have a magic ring that safely lets me eat raw human meat

But why stop with just humans? High elves taste lemony, Bosmer taste earthy, Dunmer tastes ashy, Orcs taste like green eggs and ham, Argonians taste like chicken, but Khajiit gives me hairballs :yuck:

Your sig seems rather appropriate for this subject btw.

Yes i've read the same thing from others who have tasted..human flesh.

OMG You had to put that in red letters? It's so, so wrong. I mean we have been taught for centuries that we do not eat our neighbors. Why is that, I wonder? We are the biggest predator on earth, why not eat the meat of the strongest "animal" out there? hahahahahaha

But yea, I did Namira's quest on my first toon, but it grossed me out! *shudders*

I will do it on my current shadow warrior though hehehe So far I haven't collected all the Daedric artifacts for some reason. Something is missing on my first toon, so now I want to complete them all!

I've eaten them all. It's just a shame the ring won't let me sample Falmer flesh, or Draugh jerky. And the only Giant bit I can eat are their toes (yuck).

It happens and it usually is a good emotional pull for people one way or the other. Most people dont just go "Oh, whatever, he is just eating a member of my species."

Oh and cannaballism happens.

It really doesn't bother me at all. What ever happens to a corpse doesn't matter as they're dead already. I wouldn't care if someone ate me after I died, or degraded me in any way, because I'd be dead and wouldn't care.

Nord Cannibals do not go to Sovengarde when they die.
I am geussing that some things done as a Werewolf may not count, but the cleansing ritual in the Companion questline may be the only way a Nord can purify thier soul and gain entrance to Sovengarde if they have willingly eaten human flesh.

If an Alchemist makes a restorative potion using "human" flesh, or a "human" Heart, does the person who ingests the potion not go to Sovengarde?
Does a Nord Alchemist not get to Sovengarde because they willingly eat the two ingredients?

I roleplay that my Nordic Alchemists found the effects from reading a Dunmer Alchemists notes, because it was really annoying to my Morrowind Nords when the Temple Dunmer called Nords Cannibals.
My Characters end up selling the potions found in Dungeons because the Lore Nazi in me knows why some Draugr are spending thier afterlife gaurding Barrows.
EDIT spelling, Thank you to Beserkenstein

Dreugh = half-human, half-octopus sea creatures with pinchy lobster claws.
Dreugr = undead half-human, half-octopus sea creatures with pinchy lobster claws?
