What is the point in having multiple races when your choice

Why make any changes at all then?

Why are there differences at all between TES I, TES II, TES III, TES IV, and now TES V?

Why change what works? Because what works can be made better perhaps?

Grasping for a hold on this conversation? The fact remains that discussion is good, but about what YOU think THEY should or shouldn't do? C'mon. Guess this is par for the internet. In that case, you're right and you're wrong. You're dumb and you have a valid thought. I'd rather take an arrow to the knee than continue this. Happy Holidays.

Call it how you need it. Fact is no one gave you the game and no one said you MUST play it. There is one thing to ask for stuff and one to complain about unimportant things. They added already a lot more things to the different races as they did in Oblivion. The races became a complete new look. So why should they stick more time into it instead of making important stuff. Making a game unplayable because of you play the "wrong" race is not a good feature.

Also you should be able to make ANY race to a class you want to play. No one want to be bound to an Elf to play a Mage. And no one want to be bound to an Orc to play a Warrior.

It's almost as if you haven't read a single thing some people have said. Not a single thing.

How many times do I have to say this?

I'm not saying "X race should not be able to choose X job class."

What people are saying is that it would feel like their choice of race should weigh a bit more heavily in terms of gameplay. If you want to make an Orc Mage then that's fine, but an Orc Mage (because of the context of the story) probably should never be as good as a High Elf Mage at the end of the game.

I was thinking of making a khajiit sometime, maybe I'd get more notice in Whiterun while there.
The rarity of khajiit would make it very intriguing when I do encounter another one out on the road.
Hopefully like argonians, it'd bring up friendly conversation in some way. :tongue:

They won't recognize you as Khajiit but they recognize that you are not like all the other who treat them ;) But Guards and other NPC will recognize you. Specially funny it is against Bandits :D

Everything i said was on Topic until you started to distract it and started to talk about "Everything has to be how I like it" And since this Topic is only filled with a lot of people who have no idea how much work a game like Skyrim would take, i won't post here anymore.
For those who think i am a Bethesda really devoted fan, i am not, but i like the game how it is and think they did a great step in making Skyrim better then Oblivion, specially the Races. I don't get paid for saying nice things about the game.

One last thing! The Edit Button is on the bottom right ^^ You better use it... :wink: :bunny:

Ah that must be because of the lack of khajiit in the lands, sadly. Most argonians notice an argonian player with comments like "marsh-friend" instead of "land-strider." Or a special comment in a dialogue line in one Dark Brotherhood contract etc. but I'm happy the developers at least kept the argonian specialty strong, like before.

Please quote my entire post if you are going to argue against my post, I never said strip the freedom and force the player down a linear questline (even though the Elder Scrolls are little more that a bunch of singular linear questlines bundled together in one game rather than one big branching questline) however if your idea of what an RPG should be is little more than a giant sandbox then how are the Elder Scrolls games any different from games like GTA or Saints Row?
Sorry for that I take only one comment of your post. It was separated paragraph so I though it was divided comment.
My idea about RPG is not only blanket sandbox with unlimited freedom. It's huge sandbox which actually is living world which reacts and is affected by your and NPC's deeds. You have character which you have created by yourself, you have right to go all over the world (not forced to stay on roads and paths etc.) You decide what you do, what you wear and how's your character's moral, religion, history and living style. It's important that you have world which is worth and enjoying to explore without quests. World has to be large because travelling between cities should take time and give you a chance to see many things between them. Some quest you do you write in your head and some are written in the game. NPC's should do their doings without player and they should have some kind of personality (even a small one). I don't know the Saints Row so I can't say anything for that, but GTA is far different than RPG. GTA is action-crime-game. In it you have no customized character, no first person look, no skills, no attributes (only health), blanked world which is not affected more than cars burning and police running after you. Quests has no storyline or anything like that they are just like kill "x"-number of people with "x"-gun. I can't even understand how you can compare GTA to TES, there's so big difference.



True sandbox is not really good representation of freedom in roleplaying.

Good free-roleplying should let you do a lot of different things, but clearly let you know how your actions have affected the world and what the consequences are. You are free do to anything within the laws of game's universe.

True sandbox is... your actions are meaningless because nothing you do ever matters because you have no boundaries. You are beyond any rules because you set them. True sandbox can never really be a game. It's more of game engine.

To put it in context of old school pen & paper role playing, sandbox is basically pen and paper. You can choose to write whatever rules you want, or draw a happy face, or do nothing. For it to be a game, there must be a set of rules (restrictions and boundaries) that you are willing to follow.
Then we have different perception of sandbox. Of course it has laws, order and rules. It can be that we understand the term "sandbox" in different way I think. You seem to think about it a little blanket when I have my idea by only real sandbox games I have ever played - TES. I'm more like old school gamer and actually TES is only game series I have watched since they abandoned to continue Age of Empires.

I just want more reaction from NPCs based on my race. Despite being a Dunmer, Ulfric Stormcloak talked to me like a was one of his Nordic warriors.

I agree with this. Of course it is a "role playing game" but since it's on the computer, I expect the world to also play along with me,not that I still have to do 90% of all the actual "role playing" in my head. This is not pen & paper RPG.

Limitations are limiting.

Of course limitations can be limiting, but compromises can be made also I believe.

I say it's a good thing, my race shouldn't be punished because the lore dicates that Bretons are good with magic but not good with weapons or Heavy Armor. I don't want to spend 10 levels making up the difference, Skyrim thankfully only has 2 levels before you evened everything up.

Not so, that's why you have racial bonuses like 50% frost, 50 extra Magicka, Adrenaline Rush, Berserk, etc. I'd rather have more of those things then stat differences.

Those bonuses are really rather superficial. 50% defense to Frost/Fire is nice but it doesn't really have that much of an affect on how the game is played. I don't concern myself with having the 50% Fire Defense of a Dark Elf when playing said Dark Elf as a Mage or as an Assassin. In fact the 50% defense, and even Ancestor's Wrath, are pretty much useless if you are playing an Assassin to the best of your ability. And the fact that said racial abilities are almost always once a day uses... it's not something you can rely on heavily.

Highborn ability and the added 50 Magicka have little use if you wish to make a Warrior or Assassin High Elf.

Most everybody plays generic human warriors anyways. We are lucky we even have a race chocie at all. The sentiments of many people in this thread and their subsequent playstyle is the prevailing reason Dragon Age went from having race choice to not having race choice.

I don't know how the stats add up in ES but the overwhelimng majority of DA players played as Human warriors and so Bioware decided it was not worthwhile to continue racial choice especially considering they were adding a fully voiced PC. BTW, voice acting, even when it is really good, is ruining RPG's and all you people who wouldn't play games unless all the lines were voiced are part of that ruination.

The fact that racial choice has little impact on the game is a byproduct of the aforementioned trends. Why create a bunch of different gameplay elements when 95% of your playerbase is going to roll Generic Nord Viking Warrior 1,111,1111?

The more popular RPG's get, the more they start to be less RPG. Thanks.

There's a reason why choosing a particular race is not influential anymore, and it's called versatility. OP, you have to look at it the other way around: since choosing a race is no more that meaningful you can actually make everything you want out of your character. In earlier TES games you were basically stuck at your first choice, i.e. making a mage out of a Nord was pretty difficult and actually didn't make much sense. Now you can do whatever you want with your character regardless of which race you choose.
Which is one of the biggest FLAWS of Skyrim.
People here always talk about choices, but with all that "you can do everything" it's actually TAKING AWAY choices.

Well ... not actually ... it gives you loads of choices, but THEY HAVE NO MEANING.
A choice is worth dog-poo, if it has no meaning. Chosing a race has no meaning, classes don't even exist anymore.
In the next TES game, you probably can readjust all your stats by sleeping in your bed ... and in TES7 you can do all that + switch your race by pressing "N" for "No RPG anymore".
