What is the point in having multiple races when your choice

Post » Mon Jun 18, 2012 10:38 pm

It's called "roleplay". You know, the first two letters in "RPG" ;)

yes and in rolplaying its a proses bewen 2 or more parts.

if you gona rolplay you need to have proper response from other npc`s (and oter player′s, if/wen its poseble ( in coming games or oter roleplayes ))

+1
People here still don't understand, what roleplay actually is, but still use it as an excuse for everyting.

I can only agree with the OP.
Being Altmer shouldn't mean, you get slaughtered by Nords on sight, but they should be suspicious and react to it. Also some quests could be different.

And then there should be racial differences (stats, perks, abilities), which actually make a difference. But since the whole process of "character creation" was basically dumped, it's no wonder, that there are no real differences in races.

you will always be correctly identified and treated accordingly to your race which is the only race you can play, human.

No then they should rather keep it how it is right now, because i you listen carefuly you will hear, that merchants!!! of Khajiits are not allowed in town.
Why should Bethesda destroy the whole Lore by just make Humans available??? That would be the biggest mistake they could do.

Do you all have your sound at 0?? They react to your Race -.-

Why does my Race get called "Khajiit" , "Cat" all the time???

I diddnt say that, I said that if you play a khajiit and you get allowed in the cities while the rest of your smelly race has to stay outside it doesnt make much sense however if you cant play a khajiit then the problem doesnt come up that you cant enter a city for being a Khajiit, cut the problem at its source and remove racial choice altogether and you will always be correctly identified and treated accordingly to your race which is the only race you can play, human. Please read my posts more carefully in the future to avoid these embarrasing misunderstandings champ.

Yup, read your post champ. Race choice is a virtual certainty NOT to be removed from a TES game. Which, you know, has all this lore and backstory spanning thousands of years (not to mention a 5 game history over, what, 20 years of the series) about PLAYING DIFFERENT RACES. Would you have been okay playing Oblivion only as an Imperial?

Would it be okay with you if the next TES game eliminated the ability to play as a mage? No magical ability at all? I doubt it (see all the threads complaining about how they removed spellmaking from Skyrim). Some people feel the same about racial choice.

Now, can it be implemented a bit better? Yes, of course. Will it be eliminated? Highly doubtful.

Try to be realistic and I'll give you more credence, champ.

Personal preference. Some people don't want to play as a human.

personal preferences aside, having a bounty of options to chose from isn't the same as being presented with choices that lead to meaningful decisions which effect certain outcomes within the narrative of the game, which i think may have been the op's original point. in this case, i would have to agree. i'd rather have fewer, more tangible choices to consider especially when i know in advance that these choices will be with me throughout the duration of the game. just my personal opinion on the matter.

The only reason as far as Skyrim is concerned is, Like with many things in the TES series, had one been limited to one race, the level of Hellfire that would engulf the known world would be unlike anything ever witnessed in the history of Mankind. yes I agree there is no point in being any other race except for personal preference but its better than nothing in this case.

RPing is not an excuse I don't want to devise a reason for everything because the game doesn't supply that, the only time I RP is for my choices, MY choices not because there is something missing that I have to Imagination? in my Head.

For what, coming up with an idea for how the racism of the story should be better reflected in the mechanics of the game?

You want a "just off the top of my head" idea for how Cats could be properly handled in mechanics to reflect how they are looked on in the story?

Make them akin to Vampires and add in a game mechanic that allows you to climb over the walls of a city since every entrance has a guard by it.

Cats would have to sneak into cities, perhaps at early hours of the morning or later hours at night, conduct their business and get out. If they stay in the city too long they could go through a "Vampire" like effect. If guards/NPCs see the cat for an hour or less then they are "Stage 1," two hours "Stage 2," three, and four respectively. At Stage 4 they wouldn't attack you, but the guard would come to throw you out of the city/town.

Skyrim is supposed to be an RPG, yeah?

Perhaps some of you are newer RPG players but let's take a look at the Drow in D&D. If you make the choice to play as a Drow, you have to accept that the world hates you and play accordingly.

If you come up with your own RP story, a good one I mean, it's going to impossible to reflect in game no matter how well something is implemented.

For example, I have a redguard concept that would join Stormcloaks, as someone who already has experience against Thalmor in Hammerfell. I'd make him a sort of shady character, trying to make a new life in Skyrim. I was kind of thinking of basing him *little* off of Riddike, from the Pitch Black movie. Like a badass assassin type.

You can't possibly code every instance of me talking to Galmar about Thalmor. You can't code instances of my character rallying low level stormcloak soldiers on how they'll be alright without the Imperials. At best, I can have NPCs recognize I'm a Redguard... but a lot of reasons I make a Redguard would be personal and nuanced. Not meant for every character who rolls a redguard to experience. I have to play the role with my imagination to make it work. And I'm fine with that btw. It's fun to me. I'm partly writing a story, and Bethesda is writing the other half. I don't need my hand held every step of the way. The freedom to have it a bit more open ended is what makes it fun for me.

There's a reason why choosing a particular race is not influential anymore, and it's called versatility. OP, you have to look at it the other way around: since choosing a race is no more that meaningful you can actually make everything you want out of your character. In earlier TES games you were basically stuck at your first choice, i.e. making a mage out of a Nord was pretty difficult and actually didn't make much sense. Now you can do whatever you want with your character regardless of which race you choose.

TES unfortunately has done to RPG the same thing that FFVII did to the Final Fantasy series.

In FFVII you had Aerith, a healer, her character screams healer, her background screams healer, her design screams healer.

But you can still build her to be a Black Mage, or Summoner, or whatever.

TES, especially in the games with heavy racism, should put wordly RPG constraints on the player in the same fashion that D&D does.

Yes, and that diminishes the RPG aspects of the game. A Nord Mage in Skyrim doesn't have to work that much, if at all, harder to become a Mage than a High Elf does.

If they put rasicm in you weren't able to join the Stormcloaks ^^ What a shame.....you can't really play the game....because the Stormcloaks hate ALL races except Nords.
I think it is better how it is.

And I could easily come up with a RP Nord mage by creating a backstory.. that maybe his mother was a Shaman or Druid of sorts. That she fled Skyrim out of persecution. That he learned a bit from her while living in Cyrodil. Maybe she taught him that Nord mages exist, but weren't very appreciated. Then she died and he decided to come back to his homeland. He heard about the college of Winterfell, and thought the time was ripe to see Skyrim. He still felt out of place in Imperial lands as well.

The sky's the limit.

That's not true in the slightest, you could still very well play the game.

Want in the Stormcloaks? Make a Nord. Or build into the game the same requirements other races have to meet to enter an Orc Stronghold. If a Dark Elf wants to become a Stormcloak, make the player do 1-5 extra quests to prove their worth and loyalty.

Which supports a point I made in a thread I created yesterday; to allow players to choose backstories... they don't even have to be complex, maybe even just Mass Effect/Dragon Age like, and put some bonuses to the choices you make.

You pick a Nord and Winterhold as your home town, then choose "Mage" or "Commoner" to be either from the College or the city, if you're from the College you gain a small bonus to Magicka, if from the city then maybe +10% Frost Resist.

The nordic frost resistance comes in real handy when fighting frost-breather dragons. :)

I imagine the same can be said for dark elves against fire-breathers.

So you are restricted in your deciding freedom, which is a bad thing. If i like an other races but want to join the Stormcloaks (for what reason however) i can't do that just because of you MUST play a Nord?

Well, I'll agree with that. That's a cool idea.

LOL, now I want to restart and play a Nord mage. It seems so fitting now that I think about it... the whole Dovakhiin thing takes on a new angle. Like he's some Nord tapping into all kinds of forgotten Nord magicks.

Did you decide to completely ignore the second part of what I said?

If you're not an Orc, you have to do a quest to be allowed into an Orc Stronghold.

Apply that to anyone who is not Nord who wants to become a Stormcloak.

How does that limit you?

What should have been done to more differentiate between the different races is add more than just racial bonuses. Nords and orcs should have more health and stamina than any of the other races. High elves should have much higher magic and so on.

Role-playing is not limited to interacting with people in game, so your entire argument is void.
