What is the point in having multiple races when your choice

There's actually a Dark Elf in the Stormcloaks.

Really? Where?

Seriously...

It is one of the last few things we have regarding how many options we have with this series.

It is about the choice to be whoever you want and play however you want.

It is about roleplaying.

I guess it is why the Elder Scrolls games will never be anything more than giant sandboxes and not respectable RPGs in their own right.
Isn't the giant sandbox the main idea of RPGs? If game is it not giant sandbox it means it have less freedom which means less roleplaying. Game with no freedom and forced quest lines is nothing more than adventure game. I suppose you have never played real RPGs? I mean by real the ones with dies, bens, papers and rulebooks. They are the way how I started roleplaying 15 years ago. This makes me to know what means RPG. Most of virtual based RPGs aren't RPGs at all - they are just adventure games with a couple of RPG features. TES games are not among of them, TES games are RPGs.

Your Character still looks different then others. The game should hold your hand all the time.

Really? Where?

I haven't met them yet but a fellow poster in another thread said that there was a Dark Elf in Windhelm who had sided with the Stormcloaks and would often say that Dark Elves need to let go of their pride.

it's time to make your own games.

That's why I'm in college for game production.

Whoever Bethesda and Todd Howard listened to in making the changes for Skyrim over previous Elder Scrolls games, was the wrong person. (s)
Many technicallities are better- like a bow actually has oomph. Great, but many changes are puntitive and remove fun for no earthly reason. Yes, races mean almost nothing except the mild token gimmies each character has. My cat has see in the dark, but cannot run or move very quick- any quicker than any other race and less so than a hi Elf. Hardly a cat at all. He's only a cat in terms of the prejudice he recieves in Skyrim by the Nords. I won't bother with Cat again.

And I thought I took RPGs seriously. lol

I'd say if anyone is that unhappy and has invested this much emotion, then it's time to make your own games. Stop being so dependant. It's only way to really get what you want.

I think about doing this myself, but I then..a few minutes pass and I have other things on my mind. The games usually entertain me enough as they are.

I am merely opening up a discussion on how future games can improve upon themselves and move the games forward as a series, nobody is getting emotional here except those who wish for the series to stay the same and take my civil discussion as to how the series can be improved as an insult, as for your remark on creating my own games that is what I want to get into and it is also why I take such an interest in the makeup of the games I play. I never said I diddnt enjoy Skyrim however there are a lot of things that can be improved.

That's why I'm in college for game production.

Yeah I was thinking of signing up to one of those courses, are they worth it? I have always been a little iffy on whether the credentials of the course are useful for anything outside of the game production industry, I always wondered if I should go for something safer but I do like the idea of studying a course that is more focused around the industry I wish to get into.

So, you would prefer it if your Khajiit wasn't allowed into any of the cities? Or if the Stormcloaks tried to kill your Imperial on sight? That would make performing half the quests impossible.

Now, that would be amazing. I would pay $120 $90 for that game.

Sure, some mention of your race would be nice, I suppose, but too much literal connection would be a problem.

It's only a problem if you're not creative/skilled enough to stipulate in code which quests are available to which characters, according to a set of and/or/if statements, and to design your world in this way ...

Bethesda, it's time you showed us your coding chops. There's no need to be modest. Stop being such a coy wallflower.

Please quote my entire post if you are going to argue against my post, I never said strip the freedom and force the player down a linear questline (even though the Elder Scrolls are little more that a bunch of singular linear questlines bundled together in one game rather than one big branching questline) however if your idea of what an RPG should be is little more than a giant sandbox then how are the Elder Scrolls games any different from games like GTA or Saints Row?

In an effort to please everyone and yet make their work as easy as possible, basically you are almost exclusively treated like a nord the entire game.

For the human races this should be less of an issue, but for those which are openly discriminated against, the same prohibitions should have applied to your character with some sort of quest to get around it.

Lets say for the Khajiit. You should have been banned from Whiterun. When you get there following the escape from Helgen, you should have been escorted by a guard to the Jarl. After completing the Barrows quest, you would NOT be made a thane but you would have been given full run to the city. Then you would have a quest line which would allow the Khajiit caravan access through your actions. That would be cool and I might want to play a Khajiit as a different experience.

Instead you are just a fury nord.

It depends on which area of the industry you wish to get in to. I myself am taking game production which is pretty general, you learn some coding, some art, level design, 3D, game mechanics, etc, however I want to focus on game mechanics and gameplay with a secondary in story/character creation. Where they teach this specifically I don't know :( However I enjoy what I am doing.

Makes me wonder, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBUUmOkwcI4&t=2m25s?
How are the races different? ... How is playing an Orc different from playing a High Elf?
Apparently it's not different at all. Aside from a rare time I'm called a cat or Khajiit, I don't really feel like a Khajiit. I don't feel any of the distrust given to the other Khajiit, and I don't really feel any different from all the Nords around me. The starting skill boosts were negligible, and I didn't feel like I was having trouble learning to be a mage (Khajiit aren't really the type that become mages, so I'd have expected it to be an extra challenge levied against my character, one which could be overcome with appropriate dedication; it wasn't, it was just one of the myriad of options that had no impact).

Probably the best education is join an open source project (hopefully an RPG), swap ideas, learn things from others on how things actually work in practice/under certain toolset constraints, etc..

That too. Although a degree helps a lot.

Game mechanics/gameplay is my area of choice as I said, which is why (while I still love the game) I am finding Skyrim a bit disheartening.

Doing things such as this also add a large amount of replay value, which is something everyone clamors for. If you do things such as this you can potentially change a game from having 300 hours of content to 500.

I mean apart from starting stats and bonuses racial choice means nothing, I mean the racist Nord will still call your Dark Elf a brother in arms and the Thalmor will still recognise your High Elf as scum, the Dark Elf will hold no grudge against your Argonian while you Khajiit will be allowed free roam of the cities while the rest of your race wait outside in the cold, if racial choice means nothing then why offer a choice at all?

Being able to choose which race you play is just another superflous feature that needs to be axed from future games, am I right guys?

1.) Learn what a Brother in Arms is, because it's not what you think it is. It has nothing to do with race.
2.) Not all High Elves align with the Thalmor, thus the Thalmor would not regard all High Elves highly.
3.) Why would the Dark Elves hate the Argonians for something that happened hundreds of years ago? I don't think that the British and Americans still hate each other for political issues hundreds of years ago.
4.) The Khajiit held outside the walls of the city are held outside because they sell illegal goods, not because they are Khajiit.

Why do we need choices in our action game?

I don't know, you should go to the forums of an action game to ask that question.

But on this forum, we're discussing RPG's.

They help mask the fact that this is little more than a glorified dungeon crawler :hehe:

Speaking of, i feel need to loot one more boss chest today.

The only reason as far as Skyrim is concerned is, Like with many things in the TES series, had one been limited to one race, the level of Hellfire that would engulf the known world would be unlike anything ever witnessed in the history of Mankind. yes I agree there is no point in being any other race except for personal preference but its better than nothing in this case.

RPing is not an excuse I don't want to devise a reason for everything because the game doesn't supply that, the only time I RP is for my choices, MY choices not because there is something missing that I have to Imagination? in my Head.

Then you need to learn to roleplay better.

How about if Khajit had to pay the guards to get in.

Similarly, what if random Stormcloak soldiers in the wild required a bribe to let you go unscathed. You can pay or fight... Or what if they captured you?

Really, the biggest differences between races ARE in your own head. I still love the game, but its true.

TES unfortunately has done to RPG the same thing that FFVII did to the Final Fantasy series.

In FFVII you had Aerith, a healer, her character screams healer, her background screams healer, her design screams healer.

But you can still build her to be a Black Mage, or Summoner, or whatever.

TES, especially in the games with heavy racism, should put wordly RPG constraints on the player in the same fashion that D&D does.

No it shouldn't.

But you're more than welcome to go back to playing D&D, while not ruining my TES with horrible ideas.

I admit I was a little disappointed by this aspect of racial choice, but I can see that if they fully implemented it it would severely limit some races. For this same reason they did not include disguises and such, which I find a great shame. (Walk into Solitude wearing a Stormcloak Cuirass, don't get imprisoned or slaughtered on sight!)
