Where is my 15 GB game?

Post » Sun May 20, 2012 12:01 pm

Only a 1 Gigabyte difference from Oblivion+it's expansions....
Hand made world, 'unlimited' quests...

uhhh....how the heck is this game only 5.1 (or was it 5.6? sorry if I'm not keeping track) Gigabytes big.

I was seriously expecting it to be 10+

Not that i'm complaining, makes it faster to download but...if more could have been implanted...that kinda would been nice. Then again theres always mods.
No love for Console players DX

They compressed it!

Actually I don't exactly know what I'm talking about.
But thanks for telling me the download size!

(that Napoleon: Total War with its 22GB was a bit shocking)

Yeah I'm surprised too. All I know is that they compress the [censored] out of it.

And you're upset about the size of the game? Oh and I don't think you will be saying they should have implemented more once you actually play the game heh, you'll have copious amounts of things to keep you occupied.

You're complaining about Bethesda making more efficient use of storage space?

People will complain about everything if given a chance... they should be happy that the current compression technology is where it's at.

they saved a lot of space with the lower texture quality. after all, the textures are a big part of the size of a game.

but 1 thing is blowing my mind. how is mw2 and black ops 11-12gb each?!

A cut diamond may be very small but that doesn't reflect the amount of work that went into it nor is it's beauty diminished by it.

I tend to be leaning towards the low-rez textures. I just checked all of my games in Steam and this is what I found:

Empire:TW demo 2.06GB
GTA IV 15.4GB
Mass effect 10.2GB
Mass Effect 2 12.6GB
Napoleon:TW demo 2.06GB
Shogun 2:TW 20.2GB
Tomb Raider: Underworld 7.37GB
Oblivion 5.87GB
Skyrim 5.66GB

This huge open world is just over twice the size of some demo's, just over half the size of Mass Effect and just under half of ME2, 1/3 the size of GTA IV and 1/4 the size of Shogun 2. The only mod I have for Oblivion is the Unofficial Patch, but that still means that Skyrim is barely bigger than Oblivion. The fact that trees and grass look a whole lot better in Shogun 2 than they do in Skyrim (after years of playing, I can say with confidence that the leaves look no different than those in Medieval 2:TW) tells me it is the lack of hi-rez textures.

Actually I'm pretty sure it's so small because they used such low resolution textures. The resolution is really jarring in a lot of places and I guess it's up to modders to make high-res texture packs (a lot of them are already released and/or in development).

Most textures are 512, which is really, really outdated for PC standards.

Like I said in my post, I wasn't complaining, i was just surprised. are you sure you read the whole thing?

You're complaining about Bethesda making more efficient use of storage space?

Same as what I said above.
People will complain about everything if given a chance... they should be happy that the current compression technology is where it's at.
Again, same thing as a said above.
I'm not complaining, I am just surprised and curious how it was so small.

All games use texture compression. Skyrim's small size is due to low-rez textures.
