Which RPG game should I get?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 4:46 pm

Hi everyone, I'm considering trying an RPG game because I've heard that most of them are long and mainly single player - like Fallout 3 but without the guns. Something that I can lose myself in and play for hours. So I was hoping my Fallout friends here could recommend some good RPG series. I was really hoping to find one that has both 1st and 3rd person views of my character (like Fallout 3 does) but I'm not super picky. lol Thank you for any recommendations that you might make. :)

You could try the Elder Scrolls series, particularly Morrowind and Oblivion. The Knights of the Old Republic is another good one along withe KOTOR II. Also try out Dragon Age or Mass Effect.

Oblivion's cool, but maybe you like sandbox style games more than rpgs? Dragon age 1 or 2 are pretty good, mass effect is a sci fi game with moral choices, really any game made by bioware is at least a decent rpg. Fallout new vegas is fallout 3 with different writers and updated gameplay. First person rpgs are kinda hard to come by, if you know of any i'd like to hear about them too lol

If having both a first and third person camera is preferable, go with Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. Beyond the two camera options, it's a brilliant game. You can choose from a handful of different vampire clans with different strengths and powers at their disposal. It's not open world like TES or Fallout 3, but there are a few large hubs with plenty of sidequests in addition to various mission-specific locations spread across the city.

Any of the games mentioned above is a good bet for a great mix of action and rpg gameplay. However if your looking for something that is the most like Fallout I recommend the STALKER series. Here's some pros and cons......

Pros
- Large open world map for exploration
- Random encounters
- Warring factions that will engage in firefights at random times, very active gameworld
- Mutants
- Loot, improved guns, armor
-Survival based gameplay
- Whole series on sale for less than 15$

Overall its very immersive and open ended in all sense of the word. Missions can end in a variety of ways and its just a neat experience.
Cons
- Less than optimal graphics
- Gunplay can be lackluster at times
- Sneak detection is horrid
- A bit of learning curve to figure out what things mean
- No typical RPG abilities, talents or perks
- Little sense of character progession outside of what gear you have

Oblivion is pretty good. You should get that, if you haven't played it already.

Just a big warning, Mass Effect 2 was a big failure. And so was Dragon Age II.

Be brave and try Planescape Torment. You'll be playing from an isometric view but you're in for a treat.

Depending on what you define an RPG as there're a lot of choices. For me it's not a case of stat sheets and inventory and more to do with characters, choices, dialogue and story. You'll likely have combat whatever you go for so here's a couple that you'll likely have heard of and some you might not that ought to be worth a look.

Risen - No choice of character, exploration, factions, heavy on the sword fighting.
Morrowind - Play it modded and it can be pretty much anything. I'm currently playing a pregnant craftswoman who spent a long time in the Imperial Cult, nevermind playing the main quest ;). A varied and special game.
Mass Effect 2 - Sci-fi setting, choices, wonderfully written characters, brilliant rollercoaster ride through building a party and taking them on a climatic mission.
GTA IV - Fantastic characters and choices, you're playing a single character but can in some ways define them. For me this is playing a role and exploring a brilliantly crafted world. No stats and inventory made me doubly happy.
Dragon Age Origins - Medieval setting, party building, good dialogue though you are rather funnelled through the story.
Fallout 1 + 2 (isometric view) - Wry, clever, well written and lots of scope for crafting the character the way you want to.
Deus Ex - Smart and thoughtful, can be played peacefully or viciously, a real treat.
Vampire Bloodlines - A lesser known but lovingly made game with great writing and characters with a wide choice of character development options and factions.

Just a big warning, Mass Effect 2 was a big failure.
??? It was a massive success though you may not have enjoyed it. I felt Oblivion was a tedious waste of hard drive space, it was still a huge success though.

Well, I suppose. But I strongly disliked Mass Effect 2. I can't see how anyone would enjoy it.

Yeah, the first Dragon Age, and its expansion Awakening were great. The second one, forget it, they just really screwed it up.

The Elder Scrolls games of course.

And also as mentioned, the first and third Deus Ex.

Older games: Baldurs Gate or Might and Magic: The Mandate of Heaven.

The Dungeon Siege series is a great series of games but it's more in the adventure RPG class than a true RPG. Lots of fun.

The story was a bit weaker than ME1's, but I thought that the "RPG elements" (which, to me, means the dialogue & quest decisions, not how cluttered your inventory is) were a bit stronger. Overall, not quite as good as ME1, but still a great game.

---

So, yeah.... Mass Effect 1 and 2 will get you a good dose of third-person-shooter RPG, OP.

(And for the "Diablo with Guns", semi-RPG experience, there's Borderlands. But that's more of a shooter/grinder. Less RPG, more random loot. Like I said, it's Diablo as an FPS.)

Fable 3 :shifty:

Really though Fallout New Vegas or 3.
Maybe even the originals 1, 2 and Tactics if you prefer the slower paced RPGs.

Absolutely.
Bethesda's RPGs (Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3): almost total "freedom" - you can go almost anywhere and do almost anything. Real feeling of being in a "real world" - incredible attention to scenic detail.
Bioware's RPGs (KOTOR, Mass Effect, Dragon Age): Amazingly detailed characterisation - NPCs have real "personality" and feel like real people. Cinematic feel and compelling stories.
Fallout: New Vegas (by Obsidian) is somewhere between the two, but in my view isn't quite as good as either. It sacrifices a little of Fallout 3's sense of place in favour of improved characterisation.

I'd second that - Vampire TMB is one of the best games I've played. You'll particularly love it if you enjoy The Vampire Diaries or Buffy/Angel. It does have guns, though - but you can do a lot of things stealth-based or stick to melee weapons. Even though it's not open-world, it has a very vivid sense of place.

I felt Mass Effect 2 improved on everything from Mass Effect

Absolutely agreed - though I'd recommend starting with Mass Effect and then playing its sequel. It's basically a cross between Star Trek and reimagined Battlestar Galactica - the fantasy-alien side of sci-fi but gritty enough to be interesting.

Finally, a bit outside the box, but I'd recommend Guild Wars. It's a multiplayer, sure, but it has substantial lore and great settings and is a lot of fun.

I tried planescape yesterday... Couldnt find a door out of the morturary, so quit.

ME2 well written characters ? Tali went from wlaking codex to "im so shy and obsessive its sickening, for no reason I suddenly want to bed you. Despite never caring befrore". Choices are pointless if they all lead to the same thing. Its an illusion. Also recruiting and then playing psychologist handling daddy issues =/= rollercoaster ride. Hell the plot was dull as hell.

GTA isnt an rpg. What choices ? I remember maybe 2 that did anything. One was between killing 2 people I didnt care about for wither some money or a new house, another was the ending, wich just changed the mission and gave me more money.

I agree oblivion is bad. Very bad.

You cant play in first person, but I thought alpha protocal was a great rpg. Choice and consequence in the game is amazing. E.g I got through a mission undetected, less security for the next mission. Thats just a minor thing. Its a great game.

Honestly I cant think of many first person RPGs.

You didn't find a door because there isn't one. Did you pay attention at all? PS:T isn't a game that you can just muddle your way through while eating cheezy poofs and listening to Linkin Park, hopping from combat sequence to combat sequence. You need to stay focused and read the dialogue, or you'll never get far.

Though I do agree that Tali going from nerdy asixual tech geek to obsessive, shy, stammering romanceable cutie-pie was one of the worst changes in ME2.

Well it was kinda hard when the dustman alerted the entire place after thinking I could trick them.

And now Ashley is wearing light armour in ME3, yay retcons. Not as extreme as Tali, but it goes agaisnt her personality, she even specificly said she prefered heavy armour... Which Kaiden has despite only soldiers being able to use heavy armour.

Still biggest personality swing was justice/anders in DA2.

Don't remind me. That was the work of Hamburger Helper, one of the BioWare "writers" who also made such jeweled comments as: "There should be a button to skip combats, because single moms have to make dinner and don't have time to play through combats", and "Does it even matter what you did in Mass Effect 1? You probably don't even remember what you did in Mass Effect 1. I don't remember what I did in Mass Effect 1."
