Which side to choose?

They are evil, in the sense of the world. A definition of Evil from Dictionary.com:
1.
morally wrong or bad; immoral; wicked: evil deeds; an evil life.
2.
harmful; injurious: evil laws.
3.
characterized or accompanied by misfortune or suffering; unfortunate; disastrous: to be fallen on evil days.
4.
due to actual or imputed bad conduct or character: an evil reputation.
5.
marked by anger, irritability, irascibility, etc.: He is known for his evil disposition.

1.) They are morally wrong, they kill people they don't like. They have Values, but not the right ones.
2.) This is what DEFINES the Legion. They do evil deeds like crucifying people and burning them alive.
3.) The yare characterized by suffering, they bring death and destruction everywhere they go.
4.) The yhave an evill reputation caused by the above actions.
5.) This is the on quality that they don't meet. They are not angry, in fact they are very level-headed and calm about things, but they carry out terrible action and as such are deemed as evil.

All my own opinions, feel free to argue yours. I just took a dictionary and compared it to the Legion.

That is it depends on your morality, morality is not the same for everyone.

Yeah and look how that turned out. All dead or enslaved except for 2 people and one of them is a cripple. Majority of slaves? I look at the fort and I see slaves crucified or wearing very heaving equipment stumbling around who look very unhealthy.

The fort has like a dozen or less slaves.
And because a war is right around the corner Legion need a lot of supplies which results in some slaves being a bit mistreated by having to carry a crapload of stuff on their backs.
Does not mean "every single slave everywhere" is treated as such.
Again, we've not seen a Legion town yet so it's unfair to judge their treatment of slaves based on a couple of them.

And Nipton was "one" lottery, as in "we don't know if there has ever been a lottery before this one".
Again, it's unfair to judge them prematurely just cause of "one" town.

We've only seen Legion in war.
We've only seen their military strategies and actions.
We've not seen anything of their territory which is a lot calmer after they took control of it.
So to say "Well look at Nipton, that will happen to every town!" is unfair.

You're right, it wasn't, but do we know why they did these kinds of things to the other towns? If they were "as" brutal as they were at Nipton?
No, we don't.

Before:
-> There is literally NO LAW, and as such people live in a Dog-Eat-Dog world.

After:
-> An Army that regularly patrols the area, bringing some sort of law.
-> Lawless scavenngers and bandits roam, terrorizing peaceful settlements such as Goodsprings

Just had a few touch-ups to do. You should remember that the powder gangers just wanted to kill the one guy, not the town. Also, that whole situation happened under the NCR's rule. So did the incident in Primm where they sat there and did nothing while THEIR prisoners took over the town. Don't forget Boulder City, where they break their promise and shoot the Great Khans dead after you convince them to free their prisoners. The NCR is just like any other governement - It wants power at the expense of others.

Mr House is the only moral choice in my opinion. He saved a city from ruin, built it up, and civilized barbarians. Unlike the others, he is staying within his limits to gather enough resources before he makes the larger world a better place. NCR clearly expanded too far, and as hinted in the dialogue, Caesar's Legion will also over-expand itself if it takes the Mojave wasteland.

This argument is basically the logical fallacy of appeal to ignorance.

The NCR is not perfect, but House is basically "Keep killing people for me and I'll have a solution in 100 years"

It means that you cannot claim that something is true just because you have never seen it proven false. Or the other way round- you cannot dismiss something as definitely false simply because you personally have never seen it proven true.

Caesar's Legion is exactly like the Roman Empire of old. Slavers who force their culture and way of life upon those they conquer. Look how well they've done 2000 years ago.

So that means that we should only discuss what we've seen/directly heard about Legion?
In that case I cannot defend Legion... Obsidian... You better hurry up with that [censored] Legion DLC already...

Caesar's legion isn't like the Roman Empire at all actually, it is in every way a tribe like the Mongol hordes of Genghis

Well, no, I mean, it hasn't been confirmed so it's pure speculation but a lot of us are pissed off that the game is so incredibly biased towards NCR so some of us are hoping there will be a DLC that focuses on Legion so that we can get some perspective on them.
If they don't do a DLC for them (Which to be honest they aren't inclined to do) then the whole "moral gray" thing is screwed over by Legion being underdeveloped (IMO).
So it's not confirmed but some hints are there for legion members to show in future DLC's like Graham and Ulysses.

Can you elaborate? I don't know much about Mongol hordes but I'm curious about how legion resembles them more than Roman Empire.

The roman empire was a powerful but fair nation. If you disagreed on something, it will be discussed and finalized. In the Legion if you disagree on something then they will chop off your head and put it on a stake for all to see.

House does nothing for the Wasteland, before or after. As for Vegas, with all of the problems for Vegas out of the way (NCR, Legion, BoS), the Strip becomes the central hub of commerce for the entire US Post-War IMO, as it is the only thriving city left.

He actually expands Vegas. And he has an ARMY of securitrons, not just a few.

If you talk to Caesar and he starts telling you about the actual history of the legion you start seeing this. The Roman Empire is an actual state (which is far far more advanced than tribes) built off an agrarian base which produced soldiers that way. It had cities, some of the best trade and administration system in the ancient world, as well as built grandeur projects of infrastructure and much much more. It was a bureaucratized society which was far more than just its legions in that they were some of the largest -builders- of civilization ever. None of this Caesar's legion has. In this respect, the NCR is more like the Roman Empire than the Legion.

The Mongol hordes were built off tribal leadership and on tribal lines. The key point is that the legion itself is basically a semi-nomadic tribe, which is completely different from a state like Rome . Temujin (Genghis) did the exact same thing as Caesar in that he conquered/unified the disunified, nomadic tribes of Mongolia, and used his personal charisma to hold things together. Much like how Caesar's legion is basically its...well legion and things fall apart when he dies, the Mongolian society was basically a military and the empire they forged fell apart on the death of Genghis's grand son. Genghis used his Mongolian tribes to conquer/assimilate other semi-nomadic/nomadic tribes to expand his force, before turning this force on the sedimentary societies such as China and Persia. Which is...exactly what Caesar is doing with the NCR.

Still don't see it.

There are a number of stakes with heads on them, notably at the point you (usually) first enter the town, along the road leading up to the town hall, and to either side of the town hall steps. I had to look a couple of times at first myself, as they didn't appear to be heads, but upon closer inspection that's what they are.

As I prefer to keep the BoS around I tend to go either the NCR or Yes Man routes (you can tell YM to ignore them, to which he happily agrees), however pursuing the latter course with the intent to hold off the final mission will mean a LOT of firefights anywhere near NRC-held locations as well as screwing yourself out of a ton of side-quests, since the NRC will hate you for the rest of the game. As a result, my current character is holding at the point of choice between the two as I want to get him to max level before making the final decision.

Decisions, decisions. Gotta love it :D.

So, since the game was patched a week or so ago, I've thought about starting a new game. The problem is, I don't want to redo my last three character playthroughs, so I'm short both a player idea and an alliance idea. Though in this post, I'm mostly looking for guidance on the alliance idea.

Legion is right out, as I don't endorse the 'burn everything and enslave what doesn't burn' approach.

Yes Man is questionably out, for reasons below.

House and NCR are my choices, but both have their own problems. While I generally support NCR, they want House dead, no exceptions. It seems ludicrous to kill one of the greatest minds of the pre-War era, arrogant as he may be.

Meanwhile, House wants me to wipe out the BoS, which I am also hesitant to do. As crazy as /they/ may be, they also have a vast wealth of knowledge, both pre- and post-war, so it seems crazy to destroy all of the information and technology their bunker contains without some kind of reason besides 'they may challenge my amazing robot army'.

Obviously, I can't continue the game on either case without doing these things, I'm just trying to figure out which is the more reasonable action.

Dont worry you dont wipe out the bos you just whipe out the local group of them. There are others elsewhere with all that info safe and sound. For one there are a bunch in dc;/

Nah I know that they slaughtered the entire town and spiked several peoples heads on poles but I don't see what SkullerX meant by "In the Legion if you disagree on something then they will chop off your head and put it on a stake for all to see."
Nipton was more than "Oh, we're just so sadistically sadistic that we want to kill everyone!", they didn't just slaughter them for such a petty reason.
There's more to it.
I can't explain it though, Sir Inculta and Caesar know how to put the words together to make sense.
If I tried to explain it it would turn out like a half-assed excuse.
So my explanation for it is: Go speak with Vulpes Inculta, keep an open mind, listen to what he says and find the rest of the clues scattered around the town.
Nipton deserved what was coming to them. I admit it was a bit brutal but non the less they deserved to be punished.
