Who else doesn't ride a horse and just walks everywhere?

Too annoying getting off the horse whenever something attacks.

Still horses allow you to fast travel when you are overencumbered. Especially usefull when you are short on cash and want to strip off clean those long dungeons. I generally park them near the entrance. Remember one time emerging with 10k lbs of loot from a dwemer ruin. Had loads of ingots and other lewt stuff. Other then that i have to agree they are more of a nuisance :(

Walking and carriages for me. Horses are just too slow, dumb, and take for ever to get on and off for them to be worth it.

*raises hand* Me, you just experience much more from the game. I also don't use fast travel.

I disabled fast travel in my game and suddenly found a real need for horses, but now I just settle for walking, why?

- Forced third person camera actually causes lag/load issues for me when riding fast. (Why no First Person at all?)
- Horse gallop is limited (Come on we already have to deal with the stupid lack of Stamina in Sprinting as it is, give us a break.)
- Followers can't seem to ride horses.
- Horses run into battle and GET IN THE WAY.
- When they run off, they really leg it and takes a good 5 minutes to find them.
- No backwards walking (My mother can teach this to horses, why couldn't you Beth?)

Conclusion: Why Bethesda...why?

Good points.

I really hope Bethesda tones down the horse's arggo meter. I didn't buy a horse for it to be my combat companion nor does this make any sense. Horses are prey animals and are generally flighty... They aren't going to attack an elder red dragon or bear for Pete's sake :brokencomputer:

Also, while I don't usually use a npc companion as a fighter/thief, it certainly makes riding a horse with a minion pointless... Atleast let them jump on back and ride b*tch.

Thirdly, horses should be able to carry weight. Even if you have to get off of them when loaded down. I mean, they don't call them "beasts of burden" cause it just sounds good.

Lastly, something should be done about the dismount timer. Maybe allow for limited attacks while mounted (maybe a cool perk... bow & arrow ability while riding under archery or mounted sword fighting in single handed weapons?)? Something though, because having to dismount and wait every time a baddie spawns is a big disincentive to having a horse.

This. Also its more fun to walk around like that. There is much happening on Skyrim's roads :).

I'll share what I now consider to be an old screenshot that cost me 1k, for the simple fact that in the world of skyrim, full of magic and adventure horses can't slowly walk backwards.

Just slowly walk forward at an angle... and save before... I managed to climb down some un-fracking-believable declines.

Me! The horses are too slow and too much of a hassle to get off and on when fighting.

In some situations it will work, in that situation, no. the game mechanic wants to half-arc and do a wonky circle strafe, camera lolling, control shifting mess. I have no problems climbing/declining and used to exploit the horse's ability quite a bit.

I forget that horses are avalable in the game so to this point level 30 i still have not done anything with them as of yet. I will conceed that they seem to have limited purpose as does the various wagons i see outside of towns. Now if i could perhaps use the horse to carry additional items like pack mule that would wait outside dungeons and such then i could see their purpose. I would like to have a wagon that i could load up with treasures as i clear the many locations. The ability to transfer items to a wagon at which point i could then treat the wagon and driver as a taxi, now i would like to see that but until the horses become something other than just basic transportation i will save the coin content to walk or fast travel thanks.

I walk everywhere, the only horse I had died in brawl between me, two giants, and a Frost dragon.

I'm playing without fast travel, and ride a horse everywhere, but only because I was able to mod the horse via console to be 50% faster, with unlimited stamina for galloping (I'm playing on PC). It's considerably faster than walking, even sprinting. In the vanilla game though, the only real reason to drag a horse around is to take advantage of the fact that you can ride them while overburdened (and possibly because they can make decent tanks early on for archers, mages, and other lightweight characters.) That's probably not enough to justify the expense, or the irritating loss of immersion caused by the forced 3rd person view. Or dealing with the horrible horse AI (for @#$%s sake, just stay put when I dismount.)

It seems like Bethesda rushed the mount system, which is too bad, because with the speed tweaks, I have to say I really enjoy riding a horse around. Unfortunately, my system can barely keep up with the need to load and unload assets at high speed, meaning consoles would almost definitely be unable to cope with anything faster than vanilla. One fix might be to have a separate LOD for when you're moving at speed, but I doubt that's going to happen even with PC mods.

It's probably too late for this game, but hopefully Bethesda will put a little more work into the vehicle/mount system before releasing any new games with this engine. Having a car or motorcycle in Fallout 4 would be awesome, but not if its just as fast to walk.

Horses are worthless. Can't fight while on them. They die. They get lost. The saddle bag holds nothing. I can run faster than they do with my ability to constantly heal myself and my stamina with a restoration perk.

I like 3rd person view and play in it, so that isn't my gripe.

I walk. Don't like third person and horses don't look like they offer any real advantage. I did consider using them like the carriages by allowing myself to fast travel if I was on the back of one, but even with that self-imposed rule fast travel seems a little cheesy to me.

The horses don't seem to be faster than I am, and it seems like a waste of money to buy one. So I just run.

I tend to walk as well. Since I always have to GET OFF my horse to shoot or hit something it makes travelling tedious since every so often there's this random encounter I have to kill. I know I can just sprint past it but I feel bad when I leave vermin or evildoers behind, alive. So yeah, I seem to run on my own two legs more than I ride. Also, the damn horse always charge into battle with me anyway, getting himself killed and whatnot, being generally disturbing in my own combat agenda.
