Who is satisfied with the perk system

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 4:39 am

I do not like the perk system! have to spend points on unnecessary perks to activate the desired ones!
What do you guys think?

I think the perk system is fine. I also think this thread belongs in the general discussion section of this forum.

I don't mind the perk system, though if I did I wouldn't consider it to be a bug.

(( The perc system is a great way to pick specialisations for your character, a lot of people here moan that there are no character clasees. I feel the percs allow you to create your class as you go. Also, by not picking any percs you can create a really nice hard mode of the game. Couple this with no enchanted items ie: Weapons / Armour / Staves. ))

not even close to satisfied.

many are useless and repetative. many don't add to my character build.

generic and lacking in creativity.

as well, perks are used as a substitute for other gameplay mechanics and does it badly.

I am. They could have been a little more creative, and added perks with more unique effects, but other than that they're a handy addition to the game. Plus they help with that 'character development' thing that people seem to think is absent.

Nope. Poorly thought out.

A perk system should be there to compliment an attribute / skill system. What Bethesda have tried to do instead is streamline and wrap skill progression into neat little packages. All this really does is speeds up progression and makes it less natural with a shallow illusion of more choice.

I also don't like how some perks follow others in the tree, even though it makes perfect sense for a character to be able to learn one without the others before it.

Its fine. I think many are useless or of dubious value, but overall its fine. I still prefer Oblivion's set up though as far as Birth signs, Skills and Attributes go.

I like the system.... to an extent. Like Nyankhajiit says - it lets you build as you go and I've found it to be very fun having to decide which perk is more important at which time BUT it definitly has room for improvement. I would like to see branchs and bridges between (almost all) perks so that we can customize even further and not have to choose perks that don't apply to our build. I also feel the same about prerequisite's. It's only fair to have you invest in one branch to get to the juicy stuff at the end.

gallow-

i don't understand your rationale. perks are the ONLY way to develop our characters, yet, they are not creative, to say the least. they aren't a handy addition because without them the game would be an abysmal failure.

It's terrible. We need attributes patched in immediately.

I've enjoyed it well enough although it could use some refinement.

I am disappointed. I would rather have the Attribute/Skills system back.
I like the perks that give me a "trick" I can use, like Shadow Warrior or Assasin's Blade. Many of the other perks are pointless. The entire lockpicking tree is garbage, as is Speechcraft and most of Pickpocket. By the time I took all the left side perks in Smithing for my light armor character I realized that I would have still gotten Dragon Scale by going up the right side but I would also get to improve Ebony and Daedric weapons. Ripoff!

I see room for improvement, but I don't see a problem (in principle) with pre-reqs limiting players' ability to cherry pick. Indeed, I view it as a Good Thing.

Perks allow me to customise my character's combat style. For instance, it might make it that she can wield a bow but not zoom in, or that she can power-bash but not deflect arrows. It makes her more unique than the 'your skill is this, you do this damage' format of other games.

The perk system's ok and a step in the right direction but it's far from perfect. Half the perks are useless and that's a huge problem.

I find it reasonable. The leveling system taken as a whole is, IMHO, better than MW or Oblivion (particularly Oblivion). It's the first ES game I can play without screaming for leveling and scaling mods. Not perfect, but very playable as is.

1) The game is too geared towards perks: in general one perk can give more advantage than twenty skill levels. You should get most advantage from leveling, with perks just a bonus: more like the Fallout3 system.

2) As the OP says, many of the perks are useless, but you have to get them in order to get the ones that you actually want. Lock-picking is probably the worst here.

3) Related to 2), because you have to waste so many perk points on things you don't want, it's impossible to perk more than about four skills to any point which is useful. So if you want to play, for RP reasons or just playing, a multi-skilled player, you can't. Try mixing heavy and light armour for instance, and see how much the perk system gimps you. Or a proper spell-sword.

The very first mod I made was to remove all the dependencies except for player level from the perks. I'd make it two perks per level if I could work out how.

I like the perk system. It makes sense that I have to spend 5 perks to get Daedric Armor as opposed to just finding a full suit somewhere out there randomly.

It helps me specialize when I take arcane smithing and all 3 ignore armor perks for my sweet Mace of Molag Bal.

I would just like more control over my direct attributes. The current perk system to aggressively dumbs down the character creation/progression for my tastes. I'd like to see a better combo like in FO3.

I'd like to see more variety and maybe a way to gain them outside of the leveling system. One of the mods lets you use Dragon Souls to gain a perk. Not my cup of tea, but it gets at what I'd like to see. Like complete a quest, get perk a unlocked for free. Save mighty wizard from Hole Troll, he grants you 1 perk point as a 'blessing'.

What I absolutely don't like about it is it's so limited. You can't pick the finer details of it and spread it around. make several skills a little better, or two or three skills medium better. It's clumsy.

It also make my character feel more generic when I don't know why I'm better at some things. Am I strong? I do a lot of damage with 2 handers, but not with anything else, so it can't be that I'm 'stronger' than I was.

As a whole, it's fun to play in this blob world of be anything for no reason, but it does lack the depth I desire at times....

The lockpicking tree could have been made more appealing, same with speech and pickpocket. Speech and pickpocket perks can be fun, but they are not as cool as some others.
As far a the warrior perk trees, I'm cool with the choices they made. Spell trees could have used some scaling. Enchanting and Alchemy are about right on, but smithing was a little lame with the whole dragon scale thing. If anything, the perk trees all have an "I win" perk at the top that pretty much make the game too easy.
