Why are people on these forums so helpful?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 4:25 am

It's the nature of the people the game attracts. Elder Scrolls games are often about being patient, taking your time and absorbing the many things put into the game. Your general instant gratification FPS punk isn't attracted by this, so we miss out on these kind of thugs on the boards.

+1

People are helpful on these forums? Where are they? I asked a question about equipping weapons and armor on Spouse and companions and no one replied yet.

Ahh there is alot of threads being made so i see some being buried by them *mostly threads about graphical issues and quest bugs* Also most people are too busy playing the game

I am not sure about a Spouse, but when i gave my Companion a steel helm, she equipted it. As long as the armor you are giving your Companion is better then the default armor they are using, they will equipt it, same goes for weapons

that's funny. I basically lost 5 years of my life because I was a nice person once. Omg why is this board so nice? The horror.

Nice guys finish last. Bethesda better change things up.

Actually please don't. Stuff like this is getting to be really hard to find. There's that saying a good man is hard to find and I know why.

Why was this moved here? It's a thread specifically about the Skyrim General forum, not about Community Discussion. The thread title makes no sense now.

I come back here again and again because for the most part, everyone is quite nice and helpful. This forum has such a different feel from other forums - it's a nice change.

I think you are right. Multiplayer games tend to attract a lot of younger people and it's like I'm in the minority. A lot of people who just are obllivious as well and thinks their you know doesn't stink. Overly aggressive childish moderators. I play sports games as well. Some mmorpgs and the people I run into boggle my mind. I'm mid thirties, just a pretty laid back computer nerd who has seen it all and been around since the dawn of computers and I feel like i'm in the minority these days which has a lot to do with it as well. I think people have changed as well. It's a different generation.

I have to agree that multiplayer games do attract the strangest and most annoying people. I love playing online games, Gears of War, GTA IV and Call of Duty are some of the greatest online games ever. The problem is that these games(not as much in Gears for some reason) do attract trolls, annoying little kids and the generally insane. Call of Duty is full of arrogant, shouting players and GTA IV is full of players who are either drunk/high or little kids(which are the worst). They're not all like that, but the ones who just want to have a good time, play the game and get to know people seem to be either the minority or the quietest.

What I think is different about Fallout and Elder Scrolls(they aren't the only games in this forum, but they are the most popular) is they draw people who are more methodical, people who are looking for a deeper experience in a game. I do love playing online, but it's like the difference between people who love mainly loud action movies and people who love reading books. Online play is all about winning by getting the most points by killing the enemy, most people even do this GTA IV's Free Mode where there is no winning or losing. In Fallout and Elder Scrolls things aren't nearly so simple. I don't know about any of the Elder Scrolls game, but Fallout New Vegas even having a bad guy is entirely debatable and if you go on the New Vegas forum you'll see that people are still debating it. I don't mean this as an insult to players of online games, but you have to be far more intelligent and thorough when playing a game like Fallout or Elder Scrolls.

I've never had an issue on these forums. I ask a question people are cool try to understand what I'm asking don't flip out or and start insulting people. I'm sure people are fans of this game, but you don't get the same fanboyism and everything in between. You can be critical and constructive. Am I wrong here? Does the elder scrolls attract a more mature audience or something? I just have run into so much crap on other forums from other developers where people seem to be so rude. What's funny, and actually not funny at all, is these other forum mods end up banning me when their forums are just littered with trolls who report you for anything they don't agree with. I won't name names, but it's just nice that I can actually give my opinions, ask questions without the bs.

People being helpful and trying to be understanding on a forum? Who would have thunk it?

Anyways thanks for all the help. After years of forum abuse lol, I never had any issue saying thank you.

Oh god, that's not real accurate. Certainly people tend to be more mature than most forums here, and you won't see as much of the random [censored]-baggery. I agree they can be very helpful as well.
But the "fanboyism" as you put it is quite aggressive here. I'm iffy on even quoting that term, because the issue is so severe the moderators have that term censored.
Saying bad things about Bethesda, TES or sometimes even these forums themselves will very easily lead to droves of people waiting to jump down your throat and tell you how terrible a person you are with all kinds of ironically harsh and undue insults.

So it's basically a very nice forum. Just... don't say anything bad about Bethesda, the TES games, or the conduct of people within the official forums.

Here in Community discussion, we act nicely to eachother with the occasional flare up here or there, kinda like a family! Just keep to yourself in the skyrim general discussion and help the mods by reporting anyone doing wrong and make the forums a better place for all. We love helping out... And if you don't like it, i want you to take the largest bowie knipe you have, and shove it deep into the crevisces of your little [censored for safety of children and moderators not killing me]. Pease come again.

Most people here are more mature/respectful to others due to the mods floating about. Trash is swept out the door and thrown off the cliff while the regular folks get to be nice to one another.

It was a compliment for sure. It's actually rare and hard to find on the internet. I hope bethesda doesn't lose it. Keep it up. You guys have made me really respect this developer. Some are just happy in their own worlds and don't care about other opinions as long as they are making a buck. I respect people who can take the good with the bad in a mature way.

In all honesty I see a lot of forums that are just overrun with abuse and the mods basically let people abuse people who have a different opinion and just don't care. The idiots are winning.

I'm coming from a different place. I've just seen it.

There are a lot of developers that make good games. But to be able to listen to people and help out and not be jerks is a good thing.

Plus Skyrim pretty much speaks for itself. It's an amazing game. I hope it sells a ton. Because Bethesda and their fans deserve it.

Hah, I believe there to be many contributing factors to this.

- For starters it has been mentioned that a large part of the people who come here are attracted here because of TES which is a series that generally promotes thinking deeper than most other games do, and thus the kind of people who post here are often the kind that reflect on their own posts before posting them (A good 10% (I think, haven't exactly been counting )or more of the posts I've made were never posted, I give each post a good read-through before I press the "Add Reply" button).

- We have good moderators who are not afraid to put you down if you become trouble. Unlike for example the WoW forums where a forum goer who is unhappy at the forum moderators equals to a unhappy customer, the Bethesda forums makes no requirements that you buy their products before you join here and the forums are largely moderated by people with little to no ties to Bethesda, so there is no personal loss for the moderators for upholding a three strikes rule and sticking to it, there is only a loss to whoever is causing trouble.

- We don't have a large influx of new people often. When I joined I joined at a time not too long before Skyrim was announced so most of the people here besides me were people who had been here for a long time and generally set a good example (not saying I needed one, but they set the tone for the forums, and no one wishes to break the peace here). So when people come here they are faced with a wall of maturity, rather than a wall of raging trolls.

- And The Bethesda fan community is also just helpful in general, not only on these forums. Just consider all of the great mods that are out there. While there is personal gain in making a good mod for yourself there is nothing that forces modders to share them and not only that but troubleshoot them for other people who may have issues getting them to work. And I like to think the mindset of this community is a give and receive in return one. We all like making good use of what others offer us and in return we feel compelled to give something else in return, be it a piece of advice, a mod of your own, or simply a friendly chat.

that might be true. I wish people could learn to respect everyone. If I go to a forum and dont fit i've seen it. I don't know if Bethesda are hypocrits too. That's what I mean when I say don't let it go to your head. I try to respect everyone. I don't care who you are. If you treat peopel well and try to see our differences that's what peopel miss sometimes. I do try to do that.

Like I said I think some people are stuck in their own worlds, have their own agendas and are out for themselves, and they can't see. Very few people get it. I've been told I'm something else when I get it. I may be different than you, but that's life.

You soon realise that it isn't a community of naturally nice, polite or helpful people, just a community of built on the foundations of fear. People who have to act nice or they get kidnapped, dragged away to some under ground bunker for reprogramming to be then unleashed back onto the forum wearing explosive collars that say "Moderator" on them which force them to be nice, or else. At the end of the day your dragged off into a pit where you sit and wait to be released onto the forum, where you must slave away like a mine worker digging out the nasties and the rude comments and unhelpful lingo that flutters in every now and then. In reality we are simply a community of people living in fear of the great admins who like Dracula, come down to pick their favoured prey to be they vampire brides/husbands. We need a forum version of Van Helsing, i'll provide the Hugh Jackman avatar if need be.

But in all seriousness, most forums follow a strict rule of "follow the sheep", the kind of anonymity of the internet allows a few bad eggs to act like a-wadd's, then the rest of the flock follow. Luckily the same is true here but in reverse, its a self sustaining community based on maturity, helpfulness and general good natured laid back humour. That and good moderation and a development team that likes to get involved in the forum goings-on when they aren't too busy. Plus the strict forum rules act as a pretty strong troll repellent. It's the only forum I got past 20 posts on really, I've joined maybe 10 or 11 other forums but rarely log in more than once.
