Why is combat so boring, yet so important?

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 8:43 pm

Location based damage makes no sense from a melee standpoint when you can't be accurate in where you place your strikes. In a game where you have, say 7 directional attacks, and these said directional attacks can all be aimed (Looking up your character is seen swinging his weapon upward and looking down your character is seen swinging his weapon downward plus anything else in between), it makes far more sense.

Hi there JackBaldy. It's good to see you.

I see your point. Can anyone please confirm the absence of locational damge in melle based RPGs? Does the problem increases with dual wielding? Would mandatory gamepads and their anologs solve the problem? I'm in the dark when it comes down to tech issues.

I'd prefer something more akin to how Jedi Academy handled directional striking.
Ah, yes. I didn't think of that. I think I'd like to see a little more weight to the attacks, slow things down just a little bit. In JA I often felt like I was just flailing.

I was speaking of control scheme. I personally preferred how some of the JKA mods handled combat better than base JKA.

Any recommendations on those mods?

Well, I haven't really been keeping in touch since those particular mods took a direction I wasn't particularly pleased with so I moved on. The most enjoyable melee system's I've played though would have to be what I call "golden age" MBII (Movie Battles II) and OJP (Open Jedi Project).

Here's an old video of OJP back in the day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frKyLObgOeU

Combat only becomes "boring" because the challenge in it is lost within just a few levels, and it's the only thing in the game that provides some sort of challenge. Rarely do I miss the perks I didn't pick.

I tend to agree. It isn't the implemention of combat, it's combat itself in all it methods that becomes boring. There are only so many times you can kill a draugar before it just becomes a chore like taking out the garbage. Throw a spell, shoot an arrow, hack with a sword, what's the difference. Enemies come in different shapes with different names but it's all the same.

I find combat, especially dual wielding combat, incredibly boring.

I like the combat quite a bit myself. I used to dread fights in Morrowind; reminded me of a couple of old ladies sauaging each other with broomsticks. I have no complaints on the combat side...some of the quests though...I can gripe a bit.

While still a bit "clunky", I find the combat to be enjoyable. A MAJOR improvement over Morrowind and Oblivion. Now what about this DawnGuard I've been hearing about...

The combat's fine. If you want super refined combos and blocks and other button mashing, go play Tekken.

to be honest, i always liked the combat. Its simple, yet still fun. I really don't want the combat to turn into KoA style. Keep the combat the way it is, and work on your writing Beth.

Elder scrolls games have never been hailed for rich and engaging combat engines.

Well, that's fine. Elder Scrolls games are SUPPOSED to be about exploration, right?

Right?

The problem with that is that combat is essential in these games. It's highly recommended that you have at least one combat skill in each game to specialize in. You can't just be a diplomat and talk your way through the game; eventually, you're going to HAVE to fight for your life.

And it's not even "eventually." You're thrown into combative situations from the very start, even if you're just fighting off animals.

Combat is so important in this game that it NEEDS to be fun! If you're not going to make the combat fun, you should make the combative situations few and far between. Or, at the very least, you should have the OPTION of diplomacy, instead of merely having to choose between magic, combat, or stealth. Actually, I'd prefer that anyway. Even if I wouldn't use it, at least it would more fully realize the ambition of "do what you want, play how you want" that Bethesda ultimately wants to do.

Thoughts?

Why does everyone you meet in a cave or ruin or barrow or temple have to be an enemy? That's all I want to know. There should be an option to talk or negotiate with them, cause we might be on the same side right?

I switch between one-handed (dagger), two-handed (greatsword), archery, and beast form. I don't find it boring, at all.

OP needs a Dental Appointment! from Robbaz. Combat is great in Skyrim. I'm always open for more improvements in the animation dept but it's way better than it was in the previous two games.

I play different characters with different weapons and skill sets. This really helps keep the combat fresh and enjoyable for me. I don't have any major complaints about it.

This.
Seconded

Especially with all that "back off" thingy with thugs. You can bribe Highwaymen, yet you can't hire thugs?

Please, that guy over there sent 3 Talos-dang-ed brutal thugs because I took a wooden staff. Sure, it's magical, but come on.

I liked morrowinds combat the best cause i fwlt like i had to kinda train and earn money in order to actually kill things. If i just wandered into a Cave full of bandits at a low level, i was pretty much screwed
